Subject: Obscure 70s songs

Written By: whistledog on 07/25/11 at 11:48 pm

One of my favourites was a 1978 track called Trojan Horse by the Dutch girl group Luv'.  In their native Netherlands, and several parts of Europe, they had a string of hits, but this one brought them their lone chart single in several countries outside of Europe including Australia (where it reached #50) and Canada (where it reached #95 in 1979).  The 45 of this song proudly sits in my record collection

Hey... I DO remember that song. I had no idea who sang it though (or that they were Dutch). I had never seen the film clip before now. So... that is at least three Dutch bands that had hits over here...Luv, Golden Earing and Pussycat!

Here's an Aussie song (from 1974) that came to mind when I heard the LUV clip. It is The Moir Sisters ..."Good Morning How Are You". Not that much to the song ... but it gets inside your head! The film clip doesn't actually show the band. The song reached #8 ... but I don't think it was released overseas... :-\\

along a completely different line, who could forget the timeless hit "sinister minister" by "hard stuff"?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmRHVV44BBw

i dug up a CD by the guys under the name "bullet," which they had to change because the name was apparently already taken by a US band (they're from the UK). they changed their name to "daemon" and then to "hard stuff." the best song on the bullet album is "fortunes told," in this humble reporter's opinion, but they apparently didn't re-record that one for the hard stuff album. it's kinda sabbath meets blues rock with a kinda satirical edge to it, like it's haunted house music. musically it's not genius but the guitar tone is great, the singer's good, and there are moments of great sound engineering and production. on the CD i swear i can hear the bass drum pedal squeak.

I know this one.  It peaked at #55 in Canada the week of September 25, 1976
Their only other chart single in Canada was called 'Under My Thumb' (not a cover of the Rolling Stones)

This alone makes it awesome.  Nielsen and Pearson were one of the greatest short-lived acts of the late 70s/early 80s

Here's another one from the Netherlands ...

From 1977, it's I Want You to Be Mine by Kayak.  In their country, they were by far obscure, but this track brought them their lone chart single in North America.  It peaked at #55 in the US and #63 in Canada during 1978

Kayak - I Want You to Be Mine
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tfKR9Ouz5oQ

Here's one from Greece by Demis Roussos.  He was originally the singer in the late 60s band Aphrodite's Child (a band that featured Vangelis on keyboards) who had several European hits including Rain and Tears which made them a one hit wonder in the UK.  Following their demise, Roussos went solo and from 1975 - 1977, hit the UK Top 40 with 6 singles.  North American success eluded him, so he hired an American producer, and in 1978, reached #47 in the US and #75 in Canada with the excellent ballad That Once In A Lifetime

Another great obscurity is by an American singer named Carolyne Mas.  Her 1979 single Stillsane reached #71 in the US and #53 in Canada.  A follow-up single Quote Goodbye Quote failed to chart in the US Hot 100, but did reach #60 in Canada and #71 in the UK.  A third single from her 1979 debut titled Never Two Without Three failed to chart altogether.

In this video are all three of those songs back to back.  Stillsane is in my Top 10 of greatest songs of the 70s.

Maybe not obscure (in Australia). But this is a clip from a 70's Brisbane band. Lead singer (Carol Lloyd) had a great rock chick voice. Ugly as sin .... but sounded great!  ;D  This song was a hit  and featured the flute (which was different for that time ...until Men At Work came along).

^ The Flute in that song is reminiscent of 'Down Under' by Men at Work.  Dang, that lead singer is quite ugly though.  She reminds me of Tracey Ullman as that old hag witch in 'Robin Hood: Men in Tights'.  Not a bad song though.

It's a shame that Luv' never made it big in North America.  Glad you like the song.  It really is catchy :)

Here's a real obscure one from Germany circa 1979 by a group called Dschinghis Khan (known as Genghis Khan in several other parts of the world).  Not sure where else this was a hit, but upon research, I see it was a #1 hit in Australia.  It is called Moscow

I found an old various artists LP from Australia that compiled big hits in that country circa 1979-1980 and it features this song, as well as Stillsane by Carolyne Mas as I posted above, which shows that Australia has some good taste in music.

The sound of Moscow by Genghis Khan kind of reminds me of Boney M.  I really enjoy this ...

I remember that one well.  Australia was pretty lucky back in the 70's and early 80's... we had all sorts of music  (whereas the U.S. seemed to shut out some really big overseas artists). Australian artists tended to stay within our country boundaries ... until artists like The Bee Gees, LRB, Air Supple and Olivia Newton John started breaking it big in the U.S.  We also had a great rock/pop music show here (Countdown) that showcased new music from here and abroad. That's why ABBA hit it so big over here (early in their career).

But I'm always surprised about some of the music that you (and Henk) have heard of from over here.

^ Australian artists did better in Canada during the 80s than the 70s.  Excluding Air Supply (they never charted here until 1980), the only other Aussie act apart from the ones you mentioned that I know reached the Canadian chart during the 1970s was the Tarney/Spencer Band, who had two some what obscure hits in 1978-1979 with It's Really You (#92 in Canada; #86 in the US) and No Time to Lose (#64 in Canada; #84 in the US)

In 1981, a few years after they broke up, No Time To Lose actually re-charted in the US at #74 due to the video getting heavy rotation on the then newly established channel known as MTV.  This is my favourite Australian song of the 70s ...

1980.  Still a good song nonetheless.

All three of those did reach the Top 40, but they are ones that are seldom heard which would make them obscure.  Excellent choices.  I listen to 'Ariel' all the time.

Going off topic here for just a minute. Several years back, one of my best friends & I were in a supermarket at the checkout. I can't remember what started it but one of us would say, "I have a Jimmy Osmond album" to which the other one would reply, "Well, I have a Barry Manalow." That was followed by, "Well, I have the Bay City Rollers." Of course the reply was, "I have the Partridge Family."

We were going on like this-BRAGGING about our most cheesiest albums possible. We looked around and people were laughing. I don't know if they were laughing because we were actually admitting to have these cheesy albums or the fact that THEY ALSO had those same cheesy albums.  :D ;D ;D ;D ;D

but with mccartney on lead vocals. (i like it anyway. my song by lightning there's a moment where they're plainly lifting off cream, bands ripped off each others' styles a lot back in those days, it was kinda de rigueur. rock bands today get around that by not having style. BUT I DIGRESS.)

and then, randomly, there's a hammond solo that weighs the song down like a lead balloon!

and then a pretty decent guitar solo! and then paul mccartney returns with 15-part backing harmonies!

this is good stuff. lots of decent vocals, fer shurr.

at the risk of looking like i'm buttering whitledog up, that "no time to lose" song really just gets better every time i listen to it. that dude was cheated that that wasn't a hit.

The fact that it charted twice in 2 different decades, makes it almost a Top 40 esque hit.

Sad Café were a British band who had a small run of hits in their homeland from 1979-1983.  The single Run Home Girl sadly was not one of them, but despite that, it did reach #71 in the US and #72 in Canada during 1979.  Despite it's low chart placing, I still hear it often on classic radio stations.

Lead singer Paul M. Young fared better in North America as one of the lead singers of Mike + the Mechanics

Obscure because it's never been re-issued in any way, shape, or form (George Harrison's estate owns the tapes, so I wouldn't think they'll be available any time yet...)

Ian Thomas - Painted Ladies {1973}

I missed this one.  Ian is the brother of SCTV Dave Thomas.  As a singer, Painted Ladies was his only US hit, though he had many hits in Canada.  As a song writer, he had big success in the US during the 80s with 'Runner' by Ian Thomas and 'Right Before Your Eyes' by America.  He also reached Australia when Aussie singer Daryl Braithwaite turned his songs 'All I Do' and 'As the Days go By' into Australian hits in the late 80s.

The Angels had a cult following in America.  They were apparently banned from NYC because everytime they toured there, riots would occur.  I have their 1981 album 'Night Attack' and 1989 album 'Beyond Salvation' on cassette, and I love them.

Over here, they were first known as Angel city, then The Angels from Angel City.

When it comes to old school Canada, I know lots.  Here's a few ones that are rarely heard anymore ...

Troiano - We All Need Love (1979)

But the Flying Circus one was the highest charting of all five lol.  It reached #12 in Canada.
It does seem to be a song that not alot of people have even heard of I find, despite that chart placing.

Do you recognize the setting in that Troiano song?  It's You Can't Do That on Televisoon.  Such a catchy song, I'd vote it the best song of 1979

"...before fading into obscurity".
Here in the U.S. she did that pretty quickly.

I never heard that "You Were My Friend" one before. Looks like it's another song from her first album.
Not bad. It sounds sort of Elton John-ish.
(And she looks fine in the photo for that song -- I'd be her friend  :))

Made it to #40 on UK charts.

Sweet Sweet Smile reached #43 in Canada.  'Piano Picker' was not a single, however it was written by Randy Edelman, who is best known as a film and TV composer.

Speaking of Randy Edelman, in 1976, he reached #11 in the UK with a cover of the 60s classic 'Concrete and Clay'.  His version never charted in the US, but it did reach #94 in Canada.  I personally enjoy it best over the Unit 4+2 and Eddie Rambeau versions

these guys would have made it as a loud rock combo, with this alarming blonde person playing a les paul. it's pitched too hard for a singer-songwriting arrangement. and plus come on, that singer's not telling soft-rock stories, she's dishing out hard-rock diatribes. these cats were cheated! they got bad advice.

Wigwam was a progressive rock band, aka. "prog rock," along with Yes, King Crimson, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Hawkwind, Gentle Giant, and so forth.  Prog rock showcases improvisation, experimentation, jazz, funk, and classical elements.  So you could hear some of that on the Wigwam track.

because you BEGGED for more "hard stuff." love the roots-rock verses with the off-count feel changes and the moments where it floats into non-western tonality. and throughout it keeps a good sense of dramatic climb and fall -- it's called dynamics, ya nu-metalers! look into it! -- and has a nice harmonic minor, V turnaround. and then there's a huge breakdown bridge! and then, um, they kinda don't nail it on that third verse. nobody's perfect.

AND THEN THERE'S A HUGE CODA. oh, wait. there's not.

love this tune. you have to get into "hard stuff," or you hate america. or britain, maybe. i dunno,  they might be british.

great song, i grew up with this. a lesser known issue by the cat behind "boom boom (out go the lights)," which was actually a pretty huge hit from back in the day. a rather upsettingly misogynist song, as i revisit it, "boom boom" is, but mr. travers' guitar work is golden. "boom boom" was a smash hit when i was a kid, but i had to buy a CD anthology to turn onto this one as well as "snortin' whiskey." travers was a great guitar player, i feel about him a bit the way i do about ted nugent, that i wish he'd developed his sensibilities and his soul to match the technical precision of his playing.

I have it on some or other disco compilation on CD.  I used to segue it with Esperanto "Kissing the Machine" for similar theme.  Also, "Automatic Lover" features "See Me, Feel Me" chorus (P. Townshend) and "Kissing the Machine" features "I Want You to Want Me" chorus (R. Nielson).  Some listeners didn't like it, but fuggem.

Desiderata by Les Crane.

Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible without surrender,
Be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly, and listen to others -
Even the dull and ignorant, they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons - they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter,
For always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Thumbs up for these Canadian gems.  They were all minor hits in Canada in 1979.

Dalbello wrote Pretty Girls and originally released it in 1978.  Melissa Manchester covered it in 1979 and took it to #39 in the US and #80 in Canada

Apparently Mr. Stevens has a regular night club act in Quebec and he performs 'Live is in the Air' almost on a nightly basis.

Survival was fantastic.  Shame Marc never had bigger hits.  He had bigger success as a songwriter, penning Top 40 hits for other artists, a few which included 'Pieces of Ice' by Diana Ross and 'Rhythm of My Heart' by Rod Stewart.

I know the two. Might know the ZWOL one. That was around the same time as another song of his "Call out my name". But my favorite of his was from 1975 or 1976, "Ooo, Mama, Mama" when he sang for "Brutus"

Not completely obscure over here as well: it made #26 in our charts, and I see it made #29 in UK.
Chakachas were from Belgium, BTW.

And from Chakachas it's just a little Hop, Skip & Jump to Chalawa - a completely obscure Canadian band.
This song made #24 in our charts in 1979.

I didn't know Zwol had even charted outside of North America.  The best I knew he did outside of Canada was his songs 'New York City' and 'Call Out My Name' that were minor hits in the US

That they did.  That was one of their early 80s singles.  It was popular in the clubs

Nice selections, Whistledog.

I heard this in late 1979 and was in the charts until early 1980. Nice tune.  In my last year of high school, we used the "What's it gonna be, your place or mine" catchy lyric when we tried to "get" girls.  ;D

PRIVATE EYE - Your Place Or Mine

This next selection was also a nice one, it received quite a bit of airtime on AM radio.

I remember this one real well.  It reached #47 in Canada.  Private Eye was formed by Hughie Leggat, an original member of A Foot in Cold Water (best known for the song 'Make Me Do Anything You Want') and his brother Gordie Leggat.  A 2nd single from Private Eye called 'Changes' peaked at #93 in January of 1980 .  Their self-titled 1979 album was their only album and in 1982, the Leggat brothers resurfaced with a double album titled 'Illuminations' under the name Leggat and it was a bomb

The big hit from that 'Images at Twilight' album was called It's Time (Chapter Three).  SAGA never had big chart hits in Canada, but what they did have was frequently played on radio.  Their biggest hit in Canada was 'Wind Him Up' in 1981, but the one I heard the most on radio from them was 'Only Time Will Tell' from 1987

I am a BIG fan of that song.  It is such a great tune!

One of the members of Dr. Music passed away a few years ago.  His name was Terry Black and he was a former 60s Teen Idol.  He was no Paul Anka or Bobby Curtola, but he was popular enough to make the ladies go wild with this 1964 classic (mostly in Canada though.  This only reached #99 in the US) ...

Howard, usually what you post is very obscure (to me). Very often not only have I never heard the song, but also never heard of the artist either. Wonderful job you usually do.  Keep up the good work, man.
However...This selection from "Ides of March"..it did reach #2 in the US billboard charts.  Just like the Sesame street song "One of these things is not like the other". this one doesn't fit.

Here's one from 1977 called Fiesta by Italian singer Raffaella Carra.  This reached #40 in Canada and made her a one hit wonder here.  She was also a one hit wonder in the UK, but it wasn't with this song (that one was called Do it Do it Again in 1978)

Fiesta wasn't a hit in The Netherlands, but the tune sounds vaguely familiar. Could be because some Dutch artist used it to his/her own advantage, but I don't recall who or when.
Rafaella's lone hit over here was the original Italian version of Do It Do It Again, A Far l'Amore Comincia Tu.

Scary to think this lady will be turning 70 later this year.

I remember hearing this song on my parents' oldies station.
I find it uplifting; sort of reminds me of a lazy sunny summer day.

I like it. It still gets quite a bit of radio play.

This song is not obscure, for it is frequenctly played on radio in the UK and was used for the soundtrack for the feature film "The Magic Roundabout" (2005).

The thread isn't "One hit wonders", Howard. It's "obscure songs". So, songs that not too many people know. If a song made the top 40 (like this one probably did) , it's not an obscure song.  It doesn't matter if no one knows the artist OR the artist was popular...it depends if the song was obscure or not.

For example, people might know Janis Ian, but not too many know this song by her.
