Subject: Remember the nation wide 55mph speed limit?

Say what you want to about Nixon, but that one law probably did more to save gas and reduce air pollution than the most hideous, cost prohibitive ideas the EPA could ever dream up. Think about it. Just simply slowing everyone down. No new and radical engine designs ( although they eventualy came ), no biofuels, just pure simplicity. I was a teenager back then and I didnt like it at all, but in retrospect it was the easiest and surest way to conserve energy.

I remember the 55 mph limit.  I don't remember people ever following it.  The law was much more effective at raising revenue through speeding tickets than getting people to slow down to conserve fuel!
