Subject: 1970s Margarine Tub Question

Written By: zed300 on 11/16/12 at 12:55 pm

I know this is going to sound like a very strange question, but here goes.  Does anyone know what brand of margarine, during the 1970s, came in a white tub with gold tear drops along the side?  I remember this from when I was little, but can't remember the brand.  Does anyone know?

Thanks.  What I'm remembering looked a little different, but this could have been it. After all, it was 35 years ago!

Just a question or two: Are you from the U.S.?  What region of the states are you in (if you are)?  Do you remember anything about the margarine, a commercial or anything else?

Yup-classic commercial. I went to school with a girl who's name was Siobhan (pronounced Sha-bon) and we used to always say, "If you think it's butter, but it's not. It's Siobhan." She hated it.  ;D ;D ;D  But, she was really cool.

Poor Siobhan. I'm sure she was margarinally disappointed with those comments.

Back in the 1970's, people did so many drugs that they actually got into arguments with their margarine tubs.  :o

I live in Illinois.  All I can remember is the tub itself, since a neighbor had a bunch of them.  It may have been Chiffon from an earlier or later area.  The "teardrop" I remember was the color of the dot in the middle on the Chiffon tub shown, but it only had the point at the top, making it look like a drop.  I also remember, strangely enough, seeing it on the dinner table in an old All In The Family episode.

On a related note, I used to LOVE the old "Mother Nature" and Parkay "Butter" commercials from the 70s!  Commercials then would actually make me laugh!  Most of the current commercials just seem dumb.

A bit of trivia... Vic Tayback and the lady in the Chiffon commercial (Dena Dietrich) played husband and wife in the 1978 tv movie "Getting Married"!

It IS Fleischmann's!  I narrowed a "Google" search down to Fleischmann's and on images found an old Fleischmann's cookbook.  On the cookbook, there was a small picture of the tub and I could tell that was the one I was thinking of.  I'd love to find one, but I doubt very many people have 30+ year old margarine tubs laying around!

Thanks for all who responded to this thread!

Got an image/screencap/link to it? I stumbled over this 1960s tub after you confirmed betty's call on Fleischmann's. It came from an eBay auction.

Going off on a tangent here.

You are so right. We went to an auction yesterday and they had a bunch of Lucky Strike cigs packs-unopened. I can't remember how much they went for but WHY WOULD ANYONE WANT TO BUY THAT? But they do-for boocoo bucks. You should do a search for that crap on eBay and you wouldn't believe what they go for.

We have also been to auctions where they have empty boxes/tins of cleaning stuff, coffee, spices, laundry soap, etc. etc. And believe it or not, that stuff sells.  ??? :o :o :o

Ok, back to topic.

Same here.  My grandparents never caught on to the plastic throwaway society.  They saved anything that resembled something useful.  They saved shampoo bottles.  What can you do with an shampoo bottle?  Nothing.  But...there must be something...

Depending on the size of the shampoo bottle, I will reuse a small shampoo bottle to put more shampoo in for traveling.

That's what My Father does, He saved a shampoo bottle then whenever we ran out of shampoo, He'd go to the 99 cent store and refill it with different shampoo and put it in the old one.

And it took longer to open xmas presents because you were supposed to save the wrapping paper for re-use.  My birthday's in April and my Nana would give me presents with Santa Claus wrapping.  The Great Depression did funny things to people!

That's a good idea, that way you don't have to waste money buying shampoo.

Wow does this bring back memories.  And some recent.

A few months ago I rode up to visit my dad, and he still has about a dozen Parkay butter bowls from the early 1970's.

Hey there Cat!

Long story.  2011 had me moving 3 times, 2012 had me leaving active duty, moving 4 times, going to ITT for 6 months.  So far this year I have moved yet again, and am back Active Duty for 3 months for school.

Basically so busy have not had much time to do much of anything.

Original site: Kooky Kitsch.  The cookbook the original poster refers to is also available (as of this writing) used on Amazon from 12 sellers for $0.96:

"Low Sodium Diets can be Delicious: A Special Diet Guide and Cookbook for Low-Sodium Diets by the Makers of Fleischmann's Unsalted Magarine".

That's not going to get you the actual tub depicted, but it should provide anyone who ever stumbles upon this page with enough information to find the tub.  It should also attract people who search for the history of Fleischmann margarine tub logos.  I do recognize the design on the side of the circular margarine tub, and I was born well after 1966.

OK, margarine nerds who stumble over this thread in the next few years, you need to know that this board has a memory like an elephant.  If you're reading this and still have a tub, take a picture and upload it.  We'll be here to notice.  Also, how did the logos on the side of the margarine tubs change over the 60s/70s/80s?

Thanks for posting the actual picture!  I never have figured out how to do that!

Thanks also for the info about the cookbooks on Amazon.  I never even thought of checking Amazon (even though I shop there all the time).  I just didn't want to pay the "Kooky Kitsch" price.  It's not the actual tub, but it's the next best thing so I'm going to pick one up.

I remember the gold drops through about the late 70s, and then I think the logo changed to a corn stalk.

When I posted this thread (my first here), I wasn't sure how much of a response there would be.  I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one interested in this.
