Subject: Schoolhouse rock!

Written By: warped on 11/27/12 at 12:19 pm

Does anyone remember this? Any fond memories?

This was series of animated musical educational short films that aired during the Saturday morning children's programming on ABC. The topics covered included grammar, science, US history and mathematics.

From "Conjunction Junction" to "Figure 8" to "I'm jusy a Bill"...What do you remember about Schoolhouse rock and what 3 minute short was your favorite?

Sure do. Schoolhouse Rock was still a staple on ABC Saturday mornings up until around 2000, so even a 90's child such as myself could enjoy what was truly a transcendent children's program.

I always liked this one:

And, little known fact, but they even made a few new episodes in the mid 90's, which I remember seeing myself:

I still walk around singing these-especially interplanet janet, just a bill, mother necessity and conjunction junction.  ;D ;D

And now I can't quote the US Constitution preamble without singing it the Schoolhouse Rock way.  :)

Schoolhouse rock was a wonderful way for us (In Canada) to learn about American history.

One of the very few times when both education, civics, and entertainment all combined in a perfect storm of awesome to make songs heard 'round the world. I'm going with this one:

HBu9LZa8Yrk
  - School House Rock, Electricity, Electricity, 1979 original.

o5PRHDHk4iM
  - Goodness, Electricity, Electricity, 1996 compilation album of tributes.

Required listening: Everyone from Biz Markie to Ween to Moby chipped in to make Schoolhouse Rock! Rocks

  - Casino Jack and the United States of Money, Just A Bill

"Whoof!  You sure gotta climb a lotta steps to get to this Capitol building here in Washington!  But I wonder who that sad little scrap of paper is?"

I'm just a bill, oh yes, I'm only a bill,
Just trying to get through on Capitol Hill,
I thought the power of my ideas would carry the day,
But I've been told it doesn't work that way.

'Cos the lobby game has come to town,
With lots of money to pay.  DupMissing Lyrics ??? (did the video drop a syllable?)
They hail from K Street with influential thoughts,
Backroom meetings, and TV spots, oh,
Hired to make opinion sway,
Not red or blue, but their party's here to stay,

"Listen to all that noise!  Who are they arguing about?"
"That's my friend, healthcare reform.  He wanted to insure the masses..."

He was a bill, yes, only a bill,
But lobbyists spent $700 mill,
To give their ideas some extra clout,
And as a result, the public option's out...

"Oh, no!  That's awful!"
"You think that's bad?"

Wall Street lobbyists have Main Street deranged,
Half a billion later, and regulations unchanged,
They meet for tea, and say "No taxes",
Some say they've caused financial collapses,
See, it's funny - even when all that money,
Your ballot they can't rob, your vote keeps their jobs...

"Oh, that's great!"

Oh yes, a bill is just a bill,
But we can help it through, with strong public will...

"Hold your Reps accountable.  You have a say."

I'm a little more cynical than the creators, but it's a beautiful heartwarming tribute - and it's so true to the spirit of the late-70s version - that I just had to transcribe the lyrics.

I had the "Schoolhouse Rock! Rocks" CD when I was a kid. It had Blind Melon singing Three is a Magic Number and Moby doing "verb." Looking back on it, none of the covers were very good and most of the artists I never heard about even when I grew older.

Adverbs.  Lolly Lolly Lolly
::)

They played it to death all through elementary school.

Then my college writing teacher said I shouldn't use them.
