Subject: One Tin Soldier - Poll

Written By: whistledog on 05/22/13 at 11:32 am

One Tin Soldier is a song that is based on the classical piece Canon in D by Pachelbel.  It was first recorded by the Canadian group The Original Caste in 1969 (peaked in 1970), then covered in 1971 by a US group called Coven for the movie Billy Jack and the following year, country singer Skeeter Davis recorded one.  All three versions were hits, but which one do you like the best?

I've always liked "The Original Caste's" version better, in fact much better than Coven's. Maybe because I am Canadian and heard Original Caste's version more often, who knows.

Whenever the song plays on the radio and it's Coven's version instead of "Original Caste's", I get disappointed.

I am the exact same way.  I can only accept that song by Original Caste, however there is another (uncharted) version from 1970 by a UK singer named Karen Young that I really enjoy ...

Funny I've never heard of Original Caste, so I went with Coven's version because it's one of my favorite songs :)

Wow, I didn't know there were so many versions of this song! I'm Canadian also so I was only exposed to the Original Caste's version until the introduction of YouTube. Not to be biased, but their's is the best.

I agree with this as well.

Other.

"...then covered in 1971 by a US group called Coven for the movie Billy Jack..."

I remember "Billy Jack", and I don't care for the song or the movie.

Memories of all three are still there, but the least-foggy memory was of the version from The Original Caste.

This is really tough. I LOVE this song but I really can't chose between Original Caste or either of the Coven's versions.

I really don't hear much difference between the two myself, maybe I'm tone deaf because the others seem to think the Original Caste is a lot better.

Oh agree, they are similar. I chose "Original Caste" coz I prefer the vocalist on "Original Caste", I'm not fond of the singer on "Coven" as much.
