Subject: All Disco tunes thread

Written By: AmericanGirl on 10/13/17 at 5:02 pm

How about a new thread, just for Disco tunes.  Post a video (or two) of a 70's Disco song - one you like.

Just two requests:
1 - type the name of the song when you post it
2 - no more than 3 songs per post (you can always post again)

I'll start it off with Heatwave - the Groove Line

Why not the song "Shaft"?

Well, I suspect some would prefer to argue with me, but IMO "Shaft" is "pre-Disco", not Disco.  IMO there was no Disco in 1971.  I call it "pre-Disco" because it has a lot of the elements that make Disco Disco.  IMO true Disco didn't exist at that time.

This lesser-known tune is interesting on a couple of fronts, and not just because it's slightly suggestive:

1 - it illustrates how it was popular to infuse jazz elements into disco and other genres during the mid 70s

2 - the female vocalist is Cissy Houston, mother of the late Whitney Houston

3 - waterbeds first became popular in the 70s

Herbie Mann - Waterbed

Here is a catchy one from 1977 called Tattoo Man by Denise McCann.
This was a #56 hit in Canada, and though it only reached #6 on the US Billboard Bubbling Under Chart (US #106), it peaked at #10 on the Billboard Disco Action chart

I'll post my Disco song. It's called "Lip Gloss". I wanted to do a short song reminiscent of late 1970s, early 80s Disco music. It is only a minute and 44 seconds long, so it is super short!

Open Sesame- Kool And The Gang

This song tells an interesting story.  I don't know if you remember this, but Kool and the Gang essentially had two "waves" of popularity - their first popularity peak occurred around late '73 when they found fame with songs like Funky Stuff, Hollywood Swinging, Spirit of the Boogie, and their biggest hit of that run, Jungle Boogie.  The band being heavy on Funk and Instrumentals, ironically the more Disco took a foothold, the less the band had success.  So Open Sesame was a song they released during that "doldrums" period (1976), and it only was a middling hit because the group was thought of as passe at that time (sad but true).  But then like the Bee Gees and some other artists/groups did, they reinvented themselves in '79 when they brought in vocalist James J.T. Taylor and adopted a Disco sound, and suddenly became hugely popular once again starting with Ladies' Night.  The reinvented group went on to have a run of major hits throughout the '80s.  They are certainly one of the better rags-to-riches-to-rags-to-riches stories.  :)

Interesting mistake here, Open Sesame is a phrase from "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves", a story included in many versions of the One Thousand and One Nights, which is Arabic based, not Indian as portrayed with the Taj Mahal in India.

He used to appear in some porn films such as "Barbara Broadcast" in 1977 and I'm sure you know about the soap opera "Edge of Night" during the early 80's, some say he shot himself and some say he died of AIDS so it's conflicting.

A note on the EWF selection - those of us possessing EWF albums know they like to fill their albums with "Shorts", i.e. delightful short instrumentals that fill the gaps between songs.  I'd always put Brazilian Rhyme in that category - I hadn't recognized that it's almost the length of a real song!

EWF - September
Ashford and Simpson - It Seems To Hang On
KC & Sunshine Band - I'm Your Boogie Man
Michael Zager Band - Let's All Chant
Andrea True Connection - New York You Got Me Dancin'
Emotions - I Don't Wanna Lose Your Love
Peaches and Herb - Shake Your Groove Thing
Ohio Players - O-H-I-O
Bee Gees - You Should Be Dancing
Brainstorm - Lovin' Is Really My Game
Kleeer - Keep Your Body Working
Mass Production - Firecracker
and
L.T.D. - Never Get Enough Of Your Love

I want to highlight the last entry - for L.T.D., this tune was overshadowed by their album's much bigger hit, "(Every Time I Turn Around) Back In Love Again".  But it is delightful.  Here it is:

You're not wrong, though I have a very varied taste in music, disco kind of has a special place. I was a college student in NYC when the disco craze was at its height and I partied quite a lot back then, so all these tunes bring back good memories.

Cool!  Same with me - on all fronts - except I was a student at U. of Michigan then (not NYC), plus my timeframe there was slightly later (1977-1980).  It was a blast being a college student in the Disco heyday  :D

Lol definitely, especially if you went up to the balcony or down to the basement. I never went down to the basement but apparently that's where the real debauchery took place. Also, lots of cocaine, and when I say lots I mean a hell of a lot.

... going home cause the place reeked of cigarette smoke ...

Know what's funny?  At that time, indoor cigarette smoke was so widespread, that unless someone was blowing it in your face, it was hard to notice

I can't say I've heard of these.  But anyway it's time for more music.

When Michael Jackson's Off The Wall album was released, at that time everybody felt like "Michael's back!" and we celebrated him.  This is one of its songs that graced many a dance floor around that release, much beloved by me.  To my surprise it apparently wasn't released as a single.  Nonetheless, it's a real goodie.  :)

You know it's funny, 3 out of the 10 songs were music videos and the rest weren't and those 2 were just him dancing in a music studio while "She's Out of My Life" was just him singing a sad song.

True - but MJ dancing usually makes for a pretty darn good music video    ;)

This was a huge hit in Europe. I love the strings. Anyone know what kind of instruments they used in the intro and the outro right after 4:21?:

I think I remember they had a few more hits after this one.

There always has to be a video of somebody on an island/beach singing dancing, sipping champagne on the sand and being with their man/woman.

Parenthetically, this song was the one that put me over the top in winning a 70's "music trivia" contest  :D

(No, no money or large prizes - but a lot of pride was at stake  ;D )

Monty is a masculine given name, often a short form of Montgomery, Montague and other similar names.

How about this version of Change when Luther had left the group to make his own music.

Not bad at all  :)  but - there's just something about the voice of the late great Luther Vandross...
