Subject: Fads Before Star Wars

Written By: naf140230 on 05/01/18 at 2:19 am

I saw this old forum: http://www.inthe00s.com/index.php?topic=46291.0

I was wondering. What fads were around in the 1970s? Star Wars is one as mentioned in this forum I made in response: http://www.inthe00s.com/index.php?topic=57734.0

But what others were there before Star Wars?

SuperFriends! was a fad.  It was a cartoon based on the Justice League of America.  While the original version only aired from 1973-1974, it led to multiple spin-offs that ran under various names until 1986.  it was notable for being the first appearance of the Hall of Justice, which is still used in many Movies, TV Shows and Video Games based on DC Comics characters

Superman and Batman were a fad with me during the 1970s.

Fads I recall - pet rocks, mood rings, macrame.  In the early 70's I remember yoga was a bit of a fad.  Tie-dye anything, although that was as much a fashion statement as a fad.  There were likely some fad diets around but I don't remember them (it seems there are always fad diets).  Astrology seemed to reach "fad" levels in the 70's.

In regards to fashion fads, don't let me get started...

Yes ... and riding my bike.  I had a large comic collection too (Phantom, Superman, Batman, Marvel heroes, Harvey, Disney, Archie, Sad Sack etc etc).  Also many MAD and Cracked magazines.

I still have my collection of MAD magazines, and when I was young, I do not think I cycled on the path/sidewalk, I was always on the road....

Before Star Wars there was...

PLANET OF THE APES!!!

My all-time favourite sci-fi franchise. Loved the movies and tv series. Cartoon was okay too. You had the Mego dolls, board games, "Go Ape" t-shirts, comic books, lunchboxes etc. That kind of merchandising and ensuing mania was unprecedented at the time.

Here is a blog post that shows what Star Wars eclipsed: http://episodenothing.blogspot.com/2018/01/the-world-before-star-wars-six-things.html

Nice find. I enjoyed that. Kinda true what he wrote - though Happy Days was still popular in the 80s, as were those "Commando" comic books. I read them a lot in the early-mid 80s.

Even the article itself acknowledges that.

Of course, I have concluded that Planet of the Apes was the only fad on the level of Star Wars.

I forgot about Evel Knievel. He was really big in the mid-1970s between Planet of the Apes and Star Wars.

Star Trek started in the late 1960s, but it was popular in reruns.

The '50s. You had Happy Days & Laverne & Shirley that were very popular. American Graffiti was also a big hit movie. I remember '50s theme sock hops at schools.
