Subject: Most beautiful song of the 1970s?

Written By: violet_shy on 10/07/19 at 12:36 am

I'm sorry...I know I belong to the 90s but the 70s had some gorgeous songs. Which one stands out the most? Post just one song please!

Ok...I pick "How much I feel" by Ambrosia (1978). It's soo beautiful!

Wow so many beautiful songs from the 70s.  Hard to choose just one.  But one that stands out to me is Al Stewart - Time Passages

Of course, there is no "one song", and people's definitions of "beautiful" may vary, but this one is a stunner that deserves to be heard by more people.

Paul Kantner, Grace Slick and David Freiberg
"Sketches of China"

A nice change from the more juvenile "With A Little Help From My Friends" several years before it.

New to me - don't know if I'd call it the "most beautiful" 70's song, but definitely worth a listen!  :)

You the reader may think my first submission for this topic is weird, but let me explain.  I'm submitting two different songs:

Paul McCartney and Wings - My Love
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZmjN1O1ejS4

Skylark - Wildflower
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9MJ8flVWL1I

For Sir Paul, "My Love" was something of a comeback hit, seeing as he hadn't ascended to the heights of the charts (his standard) since summer 1971's "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey", and had been experiencing a bit of a lull.  "My Love" was a huge #1 hit.

Skylark sadly was a one hit wonder.  "Wildflower" deservedly made it into the top 10.

The reason I'm submitting the two of these together is both hits were released during the spring/summer of 1973.  I always thought there was something of a commonality in their sounds, and I loved both songs.  Since I often switched between two AM Top 40 radio stations, I'd sometimes hear one, change the station and hear the other.  I liked that!  Between these two (and a few other dandies of the day), they made the summer of 1973 really beautiful.  :)

Yes, the Kantner/Slick axis of the Jefferson Airplane family has always been a bit of an acquired taste. I acquired it long ago. :)  It has served me well.

PS-the lead guitar on "Sketches of China" is  by Jerry Garcia.

So you're a fan of 70s style soft rock, I like some songs from that genre, especially if there's strong harmony vocals and jazz /country influences

Joni Mitchell - Help Me
Carole King - Been to Canaan and Jazzman
Eagles - Peaceful Easy Feeling
England Dan & John Ford Coley - I'd Really Love to See You Tonight
Alessi Brothers - Oh Lori
Earth, Wind, and Fire - Fantasy, After the Love Has Gone
Seals and Croft - Summer Breeze

I agree with others, there is no "most beautiful" song in the decade.  So I'll just post something beautiful.

I'm far from their number one fan, and IMO they got it wrong sometimes.  But this delightful mid-tempo is one I feel they got right, and I find much about it to love.  From 1976,

Bee Gees - Fanny (Be Tender With My Love)

Another beautiful song from 1978, "Anak" by Filipino singer Freddie Aguilar.

-n-2lPzH7Do

English translation:
"Child"

When you were born into this world
Your mom and dad saw a dream fulfilled
Dream come true
The answer to their prayers

You were to them a special child
Gave 'em joy every time you smiled
Each time you cried
They're at your side to care

Child, you don't know
You'll never know how far they'd go
To give you all their love can give
To see you through and God it's true
They'd die for you, if they must, to see you here

How many seasons came and went
So many years have now been spent
For time ran fast
And now at last you're strong

Now what has gotten over you
You seem to hate your parents too
Do speak out your mind
Why do you find them wrong

Child you don't know
You'll never know how far they'd go
To give you all their love can give
To see you through and God it's true
They'd die for you, if they must, to see you near

And now your path has gone astray
Child you ain't sure what to do or say
You're so alone
No friends are on your side

And child you now break down in tears
Let them drive away your fears
Where must you go
Their arms stay open wide

Child you don't know
You'll never know how far they'd go
To give you all their love can give
To see you through
And God it's true
They'd die for you, if they must, to see you here

Child you don't know
You'll never know how far they'd go
To give you all their love can give
To see you through and God it's true
They'd die for you, if they must, to see you here

John Lennon - Oh My Love

Yes, great song. John co-wrote it with Yoko and George Harrison plays guitar on it. It was covered by an obscure band called The Wackers, who gave it a Beatle-ish treatment. I have a Lennon vinyl bootleg album that includes the Wackers version and mistakenly identifies it as a Lennon outtake!

In 1971, Les Crane used a spoken-word recording of the poem as the lead track of his album "Desiderata".

I think it might be one of those cases where the parody is more well known than the original.

Incidentally, Les Crane later came to regret that he had ever recorded "Desiderata". According to Richie Unterberger's liner notes for the  CD reissue of Crane's "Desiderata" album, Crane told the Los Angeles times in 1987 "I can't listen to it now without gagging," adding that he was fonder of National Lampoon's "Deteriorata" parody.

I think there are others where the parody is better known than the original.

-Basketball Jones-Cheech & Chong
-I Lost on Jeopardy-Weird Al
-Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah-Allen Sherman

To name just a few.

Here is the 1977 single Hey Country Girl by Terry Jacks.  This was his least successful song in Canada, but I think it's his best.  It's a fun one to sing along to!

Ok...I pick "How much I feel" by Ambrosia (1978). It's soo beautiful!

I dreamed with this song two times. In the first dream, I was on a hammock in some kind of garden. In the second dream, I was playing the song on a golden music box. It really is a beautiful song. Truly. I just love it, it's definitely my favorite oldie. Wait, can I say "oldie"?

This song is musically stunning. Those lyrics, jeez. :o It turns any day into a great day! I think this song is about Jesus. People who believe in him often say he is the "Light of the world"....but this is what made 70s music so wonderful!

I saw them live in 1976 or so. I wasn't a fan of theirs, but they happened to be on the bill with other artists I went to see.

Here's another one that I think qualifies. From 1976, "After The Lovin'" by Engelbert Humperdinck:
