Subject: 70's songs that were covers (of songs before the 70s)

Written By: whistledog on 05/10/21 at 2:10 am

I did a thread about 70s songs that were covers of 70's songs, but what about ones that were covers of songs before the 70s?

Here is one I really like and I still hear on the radio from time to time:

Streetheart - Here Comes the Night (1979)

"Streets of London" is a song by Ralph McTell, who first recorded it for his 1969 album Spiral Staircase. It was not released in the United Kingdom as a single until 1974. The song has been covered by over 200 artists. The song was re-released, on 4 December 2017, featuring McTell with Annie Lennox as a charity single for CRISIS, the Homelessness Charity. Roger Whittaker also recorded a well received version in 1971. The song was inspired by McTell's experiences busking and hitchhiking throughout Europe, especially in Paris and the individual stories are taken from Parisians. McTell was originally going to call the song "Streets of Paris"— but eventually London was chosen, because he realised he was singing about London; also, there was another song called "The Poor People of Paris".

"Knock On Wood" by Amii Stewart (1979) readily comes to mind.

It was originally performed by Eddie Floyd in 1966; it became a #1 R&B hit for him that year.

A major difference being the "ooga shakka" chants in the Blue Swede cover (which, btw, shows as "not available" for me).

Here's one clip of it that is available for me:

Interesting.  Must be a region thing, like when you see a video that says "not available for viewing in your country" thing.  Weird why YouTube blocks them like that.  You'd think artists would want their music to be viewable/listenable by anyone from anywhere

Yeah. I've noticed that sorta thing with lots of different vids. They're available from anywhere one day, but not the next. Don't know why they gotta be blocked in various parts of the world.

I think is all boils down to copyright differences in various countries.

"Black Magic Woman" by Santana, from 1970, is actually a cover!

It was originally performed by Fleetwood Mac in 1968, although that version isn't nearly as popular as Santana's recording. (However, the Fleetwood Mac version peaked at #37 on the UK Singles Chart.)

"A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall"

Bryan Ferry: the single from These Foolish Things (1973) reached number 10 in the UK Singles Chart in September 1973.

With the song written by Bob Dylan in the summer of 1962 and recorded later that year for his second album, The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan (1963).

In 1968, Elton John released his first single called I've Been Loving You which failed to become a hit.  In 1976, the group Wednesday recorded it as Loving You Baby and it peaked at #6 in Canada

On an interesting note, Wednesday were the 2nd act from Canada to have a hit with an unsuccessful Elton John song.  The first act was April Wine in 1972 with Bad Side of the Moon (which had been the B-side to Elton's 1970 single Border Song)

Gotta brag. My step-father used to play drums for Les Brown before he had his "Band of Nenown." They were called The Blue Devils. In fact, he was playing with Les Brown when the band played for the King of England visit to FDR in 1939.

He left the band during WWII and made the military his career-but he continued to play the drums for Air Force bands.
