Subject: 1980's Lost 45's Anyone? Good Songs Rarely Heard..

Written By: Hairspray on 01/05/02 at 10:31 p.m.

Anywhere? Even in 80's stations, mind you.

This topic has been done, I'm sure. But I want to give the new joinees a chance to give us their input.

Hint: Songs from those groups hardly mentioned on the board are a good start!   ;)

If you add Madleen Kane's You & I (Available in her greatest hits CD in CD Now), I'll forever be a devoted visitor. I make a good loyal fan, don't I WL?

Her song Cheri is disco-ish, but cool once you get past the first 3 seconds. Trust me.

I'll get the CD myself one of these days. It seems I'm just too busy working or on this board to get to the record store. I dislike ordering on-line lately. One too many bad experiences.

Let's see...

Anything other than "Remeniscing" (sp?) by The Little River Band : The Other Guy, Lonesome Loser, etc

The Jets - Crush On You

The Eagles - In The City

Milli Vanilli - Blame It On The Rain (if the group gets any airplay, it's Girl You Know..)

And I defend my liking MV this way: MV is NOT Rob & Fab, it's a faceless group of musicians with that name.  Kinda like Quincy Jones records.  For the most part, it's a vocalist (usually a known star) and session musicians (or stars) but billed as Quincy Jones, who is the writer/producer.

I like the Milli Vanilli album, not the persons involved, or the circumstances surround them.

"...ooo, ooo, ooo, I love you..."    :P

I agree with you on all, apart from Gold - i love thats ong, but also hear it quite a bit. Go West, The Bangles, The Cars - all get hits played, but never those that you've mentioned. I love the Bangles version of Hazy Shade, its such a great re-make. I never hear

David Bowie - Fashion
Mike Oldfield - Moonlight/Moon lit Shadow ( what is the actual title - I've never known!
Eddie Grant - I don't wanna dance
Joan Jett and the Blackhearts - I love rock n roll ( know its pretty popular, but i still never hear it, unless i put my cd on! )
Anything by the Smiths
Talk Talk - Talk talk

More to come in sure

I hear Gold by Spandau, what could be described as "far too often" - eight times a day, every day, for the last 9 years. I still haven't got bored of it yet. In my opinion, more Spandau Ballet music needs to be played - mainly because Gold is the only song that they ever play on the radio by Spandau Ballet. That's unfortunate, because I'm sure they've got some very good material otherwise.

Strawberry Switchblade self-titled LP
Sex-o-matic by the Bar-Kays
Only for Love by Limahl
The Belle of St. Mark by Sheila E.
Invisible by Alison Moyet
Big in Japan by Alphaville

I know there's more, but I'll have to go through my collection to remember!!!  ;D

Sheila E. is a great artist. But, in my opinion, Alejandro Escovedo - if you know who Sheila is, you'll know Alejandro - is a much better singer-instrumentalist-songwriter. Just my opinion, having recently purchased two albums.

Just thought of a few more.

OMD - Enola Gay
Terence Trent D'Arby - If You Let Me Stay
Imagination - Just An Illusion ( How many fashion mistakes can one guy have! )
S Express - Theme From S'Express
Five Star - System Addict ( their best tune IMO)
Sonia - You'll never stop ( SAW cheese - but loved it as a kid! )
Paul Young - Love of the Common People
Aztec Camera - Somewhere In My Heart
Level 42 - Lessons in Love
Berlin - The metro ( Great song)
Glen Medeiros - Nothings gonna change my love ( not that i like it - a bit too cheesy for me, but i never ever hear it! )

Thats all i can think of for now :)

This is a great topic.  Alot of these songs I'd love to hear again.

I'll add Michael Jackson / Mick Jagger - State Of Shock
Duran Duran - Skin Trade
Stacy Q - Two Of Hearts

Some of these no longer apply here for me.  What was rarely heard a year ago suddenly got over played in the last 6 months around here:

Bangles - Hazy Shade Of Winter
Frida - I Know There's Something Going On
Talk Talk - Talk Talk
Berlin - The Metro

And Men At Work - Be Good Johnny (which my wife barely remembered over a year ago and can't stand now)

I too have jotted a few of these down to search for later.
(Love Of The Common People?!  been AGES since I've heard that)

Just because I saw how you typed "Michael Jackson / Mick Jagger - State Of Shock".

I was beating my head trying to think of that one song for my list of Michael Jackson favorites. I kept coming up with "Torture" and saying - Nope. That's not it.
How thrilling. I really like that song. He made the effort as The Jacksons, not as the sole artist.

Here are some that I can come up with. From listening to the crappy "flashback" hours that some stations have, I gather some of the songs in my list might seem overplayed, but that's because flashback hours are pre-pregrammed junk with very little time for requests (think: STAR 98.7 and KBIG 104 - two stations I wouldn't mind if they "went Spanish"). I have to find out what the psychological term is for those that like making lists...

"Fade To Grey" by Visage
"Doot-Doot" by Freur
"Susanna" by The Art Company
"Get The Balance Right" by Depeche Mode
"Don't Answer Me" by The Alan Parson's Project
"Why?" by The Bronski Beat
Anything by The Smiths besides "How Soon Is Now?"
"Geography" and "U-Men" by Front 242
"Only You" by Yaz
"Love And Pride" by Paul King
"The Voice," "Dancing With Tears In My Eyes," and "Vienna" by Ultravox
Anything by The Cure besides "Friday, I'm In Love" and "Just Like Heaven"
"Everybody" by Madonna
Anything by Alphaville!!!
"Promises, Promises" by Naked Eyes
"Sex Dwarf" by Softcell
Anything by New Order beside "Bizarre Love Triangle," "True Faith," and "Blue Monday"

...phew, I can think of more, but I could take the whole topic to new lenghts!!! I can't express how bad radio is here - absolutely awful!

I love yazzo - only you - such a brilliantly simple song. I've never heard new order 'bizzare long triangle' - will have to download that, but i agree with you on the other songs ( even though their classics). They should play regret  ( technically 90's - but hey!), touched by the hand of god,  confusion etc.. .more often. Fade to grey and Love and Pride are also great tracks to - so have to mention them :)

Glad to help, Hairspray!  ;D

I never OWNED the Jacksons' album (Victory?  Destiny?  Somebody here knows) with Torture & State Of Shock, but had a VERY bad copy on cassette that I lost years ago.  Have the album now thanks to the wife's album collection!  :)  But, we have no turntable!  :'(

Luckily State Of Shock is on another compilation I made (from my cousin's single), so I can hear that song once in a while.  :)

It was Victory.  :)

That's T'Pau.  And as a bit of trivia for the Trekkers out there, that was the name of a Vulcan matriarch, seen briefly in the series, and I think they brought the character back in one of the films.

How about "When Smokey Sings" by ABC? I never hear this anymore.

Speaking of this song, I once saw a mondegren (misheard lyric) where somebody had thought the singer was saying, "When Smokey sings I hear violence"!  Those of us who are familiar with the song know he is actually saying "violins".  I thought that was pretty funny!  LOL!  ;D

How about Go West's "We Close Our Eyes"?  That's the first song I ever heard from them and although it didn't make the charts I always thought it was their best.

Got some for you;

Hilary - "Kinetic."
The Danse Society - "Say it Again."
The Lords of the New Church - "Russian Roulette."
The Bolshoi - "TV Man."

Rare enough for you? If not, I'll dredge up more.

Yes, that's a Paul Young song - I loved it then, and I love the Everly Brothers version that I am, strangely, listening to right now.

I quite like that song - and it did make the charts in england, '85 i think. I also like 'kind of wishful thinking', but that was early 90's.

Ok, there's another song where Tony Carey was the singer, but as part of a group.  I used to have the LP, but not anymore, so I can't just go look at it.  I'm goin on memory, which is spotty at best.

The song was "Why Me?" and I think the band was called Planet P Project.  The whole album was a concept album, all the songs were about astronauts and space travel. There was another, double album they put out where the concept was the end of the world, possibly due to nuclear war (a common theme in the 80's).  I loved  both albums and would love to have them again, but I'm neither sure of the band name nor of whether or not the music is still in print.

Tunnel of Love - Bruce Springsteen
In the Name of Love - Thompson Twins (on Ghostbusters where they are eating "the last of the petty cash")
Any Flock of Seagulls song except I ran
A-Ha songs other than Take On Me
Nu Shooz

Also, when I was about 4, I loved the movie Teen Wolf (MJF) and I remember dancing to the Big Bad Wolf song, who does and it is available anywhere?

I can't believe that you'll letting this topic died. Looks like I'm gonna have bring this topic to life; so, put on your thinking caps & here we go: Flames Of Paradise Elton John & Jeniffer Rush; Ah! Leah Donnie Iris; There's The Girl(video/radio remix version) & Never(original version) Heart; If You Should Sail Neilsen/Pearson; Girls Dwight Twilley Band; Rotation Herb Alpert; Modern Day Delilah the late Van Stephenson; Runner Manfred Mann's Earth Band; Love You Like I Never Loved Before John 'O Banion; Reap The Wild Wind Ultrabox; The Politics Of Dancing Re-Flex; Emergency(the radio remix version) Kool & The Gang. That oughtta wake you all up. That's what's wrong 80's radio. They have a set list to play the same songs over & over & over again which can a little nerve wrecking like do we have to hear Come On Eileen or Mickey or Walking On Sunshine day after day? Which is why I don't listen to Backtraxx USA anymore because when I want to want the 80's music, I want to hear music from pop to new wave to country to jazz to r&b to rock to hair metal to soft rock. Stuff like that. The station that I've listen to 80's is 92.3 The Point falls into the set list that plays over & over. I'll get them credit for this: they play Heart's "Never" not the one that now; I mean the original version before it got remixed(I do like remix as well) & Roxette's "Listen To Your Heart" the full version with the strings fading @ the end. :-[
