I like Prince very much, I don't however like his new name(The Artist).I like pretty much all of his music,here are a few of my fave.

It's not his music I don't like. It's him as a personality. I remember seeing an interview a few years back where he really presented himself in a very cocky, snobbish manner. He's very critical of others, other artists and their material, even himself. Really turned me off to being a fan, per se.

Yeah, I can see that. And I believe he's been that way a long time. I remember reading an interview not long after Purple Rain came out where he stated the only band he was ever afraid of was The Time. Seemed like he thought there was just nothing out there to compete with him.
He's a literal music genius, though, I'll give him that. I guess that does entitle him to a little cockiness. I just can't get into his latest music at all.

In what aspect do you see his genius? I definitely respect your opinion and I'm curious to know - In case I missed something, you know.
I haven't been able to listen to anything he's done since the 80's, sorry to say. I thought the Batdance thing was a bit off.

In the directions he's taken his music, to his songwriting, even his more risque stuff, to his guitar playing. To just listen to his music, one can sense the energy he pours into it, and to listen to him play the guitar... it's like a virtuoso. He's damn good at it.

I'm not a fan of Prince, but I'm prepared to concede that the influence that he's had on musical society is so great that not many people will ever have a chance of equalling it. He has to be the most influential of those "Artists with only one name" - more so, so far, than Madonna, Aaliyah, Sade, etc.

I don't like Prince (or whatever moniker he's going by this week) anymore, but he was the bomb in the 80s. I went with my sister and her best friend to see him and the Revolution in concert back in '87. My fave songs from the 80s would be:

"Little Red Corvette"
"Purple Rain"
Say what you will, but Prince is undeniably a musical genius...

I am not a big Prince fan either, mostly for the same reason as Hairspray...he seems way to cocky. It definately ended when he went on that award show (grammys? I can't remember) with those pants that had the clear panels over his butt cheeks. That was plain awful. :P

I liked Prince back in the day. His songs ruled then. I still like "Little Red Corvette," "1999," and his Purple Rain soundtrack. (I always wondered why my now-dead brother liked the song "Darling Nikki" but after listening to the lyrics… He had a dirty mind…) But now that he's taken his name back and become a Jehovah's Witness, I think he sucks!

In case you don't know it, Prince, in his conversion to being a Jehovah's Witness, won't do the raunchy stuff (like "Darling Nikki") anymore. And that's what sucks.

As for Let's Go Crazy, I can't hear (or read th title of) that song without hearing The Time mocking it in the movie, followed by Morris's "How's the family?" That was soooo cold, but funny as hell.

I liked Prince a lot back in the earlier days, to me the whole Purple Rain album is excellent. And, one of the very first 45" 's that I ever got was "Little Red Corvette", from the even older Prince stuff. I kind of lost track of him, for me personally, after Purple Rain, I just didn't pay much attention to him anymore. Now my husband was a big Prince fan, so one of the first cd's we ever listened to together was Diamonds and Pearls, so I liked that, but I think it was just more the thoughts of our early dates together that made it stick out. I did like "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World", but that was pretty much it from his later stuff. I do give him credit, though, for being around for so long. Not everybody can pull that off.
A little tidbit, that always makes me laugh now about Prince--when I was, I dunno, middle school or jr high (whenever it was) I went and bought the Purple Rain record, telling my parents they could listen to it first, because they had heard so much about Prince in a "bad" way..anyway, my mother heard "Darling Nikki" and about hit the roof! She told my dad that she would not have me listening to that trash--I offered for him to scratch out that song (ah,records! LOL!) that I didn't care, that wasn't the song I liked anyway (though I had already heard it through school friends) but he wouldn't do it. :'( I had to take it back and trade it in for Wham!'s Make it Big. LOL! To think that song was deemed so nasty back then... ;D

It is so hard to choose from so many good 1s.....I don't know, maybe "Let's Go Crazy" is my favorite.
Someone said "Kiss" was overplayed. I like it OK, but it will forever be the "individually overplayed" song for me - not to mention my cousins who probably hate it. They lived in a rowhouse when the song was a hit. 1 day I was there and my fellow "brat pack" cousin and his younger brother were complaining about their neighbor on 1 side. They said "wait a minute, you'll find out". Very shortly, apparently after a bathroom break, a very loud if muffled "Kiss" pounded thru their left living-room wall. And again, and again, and again....... ::)

Anymore? Well, he's awwight. He needs to stick to producing more now, i think. He's got a great eye. His Revolution-era stuff was the best, but the NPG-era stuff has recently started to grow on me. Acquired his Greatest Hits 1&2 and Come so everything i liked i have.

Prince is a really talented artist/producer. The thing is, that he seems to put out such a high volume of material now. It seems like he puts out everything he writes so you have to search a little harder to find his bits of genius.
Although I can't really complain about an artist putting out too much stuff... It is much better than putting out too little.
I love older tracks like "when Doves Cry" "Kiss" "I Would Die 4 U" and the symbol album is great.

I like Prince okay...he's a bit of a nutbar but his music is good...except When Doves Cry....sue me! I freakin' HATE that song...okay hate is a strong word....F*CKIN'HATE is more like it... ;)

I remember the day I first heard 1999. I was hooked on him for a few years because of that song. The P-Funk style heavy rythyms mixed with Hendrixesque guitar stylings were his best work.
As time went on I found his material becoming weaker and sometimes rather annoying. Then came the narcessist phase. And then came his whole identity crisis thing for a while. That all seemed to detract from the music.
But I will agree with some of the previous posters that he should stick to writing/producing. His influence is become as nearly widespread as Bob Dylan's has as far as songwriting goes.

Yep! Prince was good but he often wavered to extremes. One song would be absolute genius the other would be a pile of pants.

I liked "little Corvette" on solid Gold, dam, Prince could dance, the dude had style and moves. Favorite song "Pop Life" with Wendy, they sounded soooooo fine.

Oh boy, now you've struck a chord. I'm a big Prince fan, have been since I was 7. I couldn't even begin to name my all time fave. I guess it would be "Computer Blue" or "U Got the Look". "Darling Nikki" is up there too. I remember singing it out loud when I was like 8, not having a clue what I was singing about. When my mom realized what I was singing about, she just about swallowed her tongue. I was completely innocent, had no idea I was singing about such "bad things". You better believe that after that I did and I was a bigger fan than ever before.
Oh and another of my favorites is "The Ballad of Dorothy Parker".

Y'know, even though it might be outdated (or not, depending on your party environment) I have always liked "1999".
I also like "When Doves Cry".

Everybody's gonna hate me for us but I prefer Tom Jones/Art of noise version of 'Kiss' to Prince.
