Subject: How did you watch YOUR music videos?

Written By: ThunderVamp9 on 01/24/02 at 10:37 p.m.

For me living in rural Maine, I had to stay up late on Friday night and catch Friday Night Videos.  In my later teen years this wasn't a problem, but earlier in life, I had to sneak it, as my parents didn't let me stay up late.  On weekends, I went with my dad to Boston and we stayed each night at my godfather's house in Quincy.  MTV for me!  I truly learned the meaning of "I want my MTV" during those years.  How did the rest of you do it?  Did you get MTV, or FNV or something else?

I was hooked on MTV from about age 17.  My parents had given me a tiny television set as a gift and once I got that hooked up you couldn't tear me away from the screen!  LOL!  The only thing is that it was black a white....but hey, it was better than nothing to a teenager!

When cable TV finally made it to my small hometown we actually had MTV and I was hooked right from the start...then the Canadian gov't ruled local cable companies had do use Canadian Content (good ol' CanCon) and so we got MuchMusic and it wasn't near as good....we also had FNV and those in BC will remember Good Rockin' Tonight as a source of video's on Friday nights as well.

When I was younger it was either at home or a friends house.  The best was to be at a party and watching Headbangers Ball!!  *sigh* Those were the days... :P

Now, I have to go to my mom's house since I don't have cable at my apt.  ::)

Friday Night Videos....had to sneak into the living room late t night to watch them.....i always had MTV,but, even at the lowest volume, my parents could hear it.  (I prefer VH1 now...)

Usually on MTV although I also watched Friday Night Videos if I could stay up that late and that show that aired on weekend nights on WTBS (I forgot its name).  These days I hardly ever watch videos since videos have become hard to find on MTV, VH1 and now CMT, which has been ruined since it was taken over by the owners of MTV and VH1.  I don't have digital cable, which has MTV2 on it.  But I wish I did.  (I'm a cheapskate.)

It was Friday Night Videos for me too!  I used to tape them with our Beta VCR.  There was also another show that I used to watch (I think on Saturdays), but I can't even remember the name of it :(

We didn't have cable back then...still don't in this area.  But we do have satellite now.  You couldn't pay me to watch MTV  ::)

I had Friday Night Videos and then on Saturday morning it was the "Video Music Machine", the host was some guy named Dallas I think. I used to have about 3 tapes full of videos.

MTV2 isn't that great either.. VH-1 Classic has the best 80s stuff, and virtually no commercials.. if you were going to splurge and get satelite, that's the video channel to make sure you get.. MuchMusic isn't that bad, it's at least music related, which is more than I can say about Mtv in the past few years. I also like the MTv X channel, which is all heavy metal, though some of the new stuff gets a little annyoing (Papa Roach can die now please)

I watched Mtv in the early 80s.. and some show on the USA network I can't remember the name of, something like Videos 2000 or something like that..

of course, growing up outside of Boston, I got you all beat.. we had an over the air video channel for a couple of years, V-66!  When MTv began their anti-competitve tatics, and prevented the music companies from letting other channels show videos, they actually would go out and film their own videos (which I think were better than the slick jobs some of the big groups were doing by that point).  They also showed more urban music, so you'd actually get to see rap music that wasn't in a Blondie song. I've got a page about it of course: http://www.worcestermass.com/cgi-bin/dynamix/v66.shtml

At first, in 5th grade (82-83) we had a local UHF station (61?) that played videos.  Would watch pretty much all day during the summer.  Then we got cable and I was glued to MTV for the next 4 years or so until they began running shows instead of videos.  Also in the early days of cable I watched USA's Night Flight and Friday Night Videos.  My parents never denied me the privilege of watching videos, they'd just make a strange face at some of the more risque stuff they saw...

The only times I'm able to watch music videos are at those times when I get to watch VH1 while going bowling, and on Top Of The Pops, over here in England. I should see if there are some more that are commercially available.

The one and the same! I know what you mean about flashback! Sheesh just after I posted that message I had this weird memory of watching GRT and being p*ssed b/c right in the middle of the video for "Blaze of Glory" Stu Jeffries does a voice-over about some stoopid contest they were running and completely ruined the video (I was taping it)...I never actually got a copy of that video until Jovi released their Cross Road collection....I was SO angry for that!! I'm over it now though ;)

I have a satellite and MTV2.  It is not all it is cracked up to be, the only videos I ever see are the Rap videos.  I don't like it.  I actually like VH1 for the Behind the Music and VH1 Classic.

I used to watch both MTV and Friday Night Videos.  I would turn off the lights and lay on my bed to watch FNV.  I miss those days...

I spent a lot of time in Maine in general - Northern, Central and Southern. Portland is good for the busy-bodies. But I found Winthrop is nice and quiet. I like it there.  :)

I only got cable about 6 years ago, so it was mainly 'Top Of The Pops' for me. I think the only reason I'm so into 80's music is beacuse my parents used to tape the Christmas 'TOTP' show every year. I grew up watching these old videos. Apparently, when i was about 3, the only thing that would stop me crying was if my mom played me the video clip of Fergal Sharkey - 'A good heart'!!! It makes me laugh so much whenever i hear that song now! :)

I started out with Friday Night Videos too.  Mom always had insomnia and was up anyway.

I remember V-66 too!!!!! ;D  ;D

...And boy, was I ticked when they turned into some home shopping network.  >:(

Cable tv came late to our part of Boston. When we finally got it, my brother and I watched almost nothing but MTV, except on late weekend nights, when USA had something called Night Flight.  They had a comedy, I can't remember the name of it now which had the original Japanese version of "Power Rangers" or a show very much like it, dubbed over with new dialog which had little or nothing to do with the original story line.  It was usually a bit racy.

i was there when MTV first started and i was immediatly addicted...until my parents banned me from it after seeing a little bit of sexiness going on...so i guess my way of watching videos was sneaky. i darted to the tv every time they left the house.
before MTV it was Mv3 for me. does anyone else remember MV3? they showed the best new wave underground and pretty much aided in developing my musical tastes.

If I could stay awake and interested, I would watch Friday Night Videos.  But mostly I watched Good Rockin Tonite and that other Canadian show..nuts what was it called..like Video Hits or something?? It was on at like 4:30 on weekdays and the host looked like one of the chicks from the "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" video..Samantha something??  Anyway, they played pretty much everything I wanted to see, including lots of Canadian artists that I really liked but that the USA channels hadn't ever heard of, or at least not much of.
Then, in the 8th grade we got MTV, and I thought my life was complete..LOL!  I was instantly addicted, and still have tons of videotapes of my recorded videos, specials, Headbangers Ball hostings, and anything else that you can think of.   Too bad MTV really seems to suck anymore..I definitely prefer VH1 nowadays, but my stupid cable company only gives us VH1 until 4:00, then it automatically switches to Comedy Central.. >:(

Having watched three hours of VH1 last night, going bowling, I can sympathize with having watched three hours of the darned channel, as for then swapping to CC, well, we had it just as bad. We got a power cut, and if you've ever gone bowling with those fluorescent lights during a power cut late at night... you'll know how annoying that can be.

During the early days of MTV (ie, pre-shows) I would sit for hours glued to the TV, my eyes about 12 inches from the screen.. I couldn't possibly be pried away for longer than a video or a commercial cuz you never knew when they were going to play a Duran Duran video!!! And it was only after my DD fix that I would allow myself a break for a little while..

*sigh* those were the days when 25(ish) John Taylor seemed oh-so-old, but I dug him anyway...

During the 80s and 90s, when I still had a good cable system, I had two media (or mediums) for music videos: MTV, VH-1, and NBC's Friday Night Videos. I recorded MTV's "120 Minutes" a few times because it went past my Sunday bedtime. Now I'll probably look for videotape or DVD for concerts or songs. :-/

Like most teens I was never home during the day and the parents ruled the TV at night.  In the early 80's I would catch MTV on Sat morning in the basement and around 4:30-6:30am on Sun while I was rolling my 300 papers for my paper-route.  Can you imagine how many trips I had to make to deliver 300 Sunday papers.  <Oh the horror>

Wow! 300?  I used to do a paper route in the summer when my buddy, who did it regularly went to Nova Scotia on vacation.  That was 40 daily and 45 Sunday.  I "kidnapped" a shopping cart from the local grocery store so I would only have to do one trip. (Isn't that a felony in some states?  Shhhhh!)  But at least I earned my own money for clothes and music in the 80's.   :)

We lived in the sticks so we didn't get cable so for many years I watched Friday Night Videos and then we moved to a town in Oklahoma and I then began to watch MTV...I moved to Houston to live with my Dad and he forbidded MTV to be watched on his tv so I would have to wait until he went to bed and sneak in the living room to watch it...then I got my own tv and watched it all the time...I don't ever watch Mtv any more,I stick to VH1 and VH1 classics.

I don't remember watching videos at home until I was about 15. I know we didn't have MTV, but I'm not sure whether we didn't have VH1 or if my mom just wouldn't let us watch it. The people next door had it, and so did my friend down the street; she and I would spend hours just watching videos and going, "What do you want to do?" "I don't know, what do you want to do?" "I don't know, let's do something...". All the while glued to the screen. Videos really do rot your brains.

oh, and btw, John Taylor is still really hot, in an aging-rocker kind of way.
