I thought it was great at the time... but then, my brother thought the same thing about the Teletubbies... difference is, I don't any more, and he still does...

I actually liked that movie when it first came out.  The first part that is---the second part was horrible.  The movie actually had a meaning behind it.  These days it is hard to find a movie that actually means something.  It was a bit cutesy but I thought the effects were quite good for back then.  I purchased the movie for my daughter many years later and she enjoyed it also.  I loved the movies theme song.

My opinion is "The Neverending Story" is an 80's classic fantasy film. It was a good little story, well casted and well made for its time. The soundtrack is good and fitting.
Thumbs Up!  :)

I'm 14. I've never seen the movie. Would you recommend it to me?

I thought the movie was different but very likeable. Everybody I grew up with that I still see still remember that movie and can recite certain scenes, so it definetly has staying power.

Well said, Hairspray!  I couldn't agree with you more!   ;)  That movie still remains one of my favorites from the 80's, and my daughter now loves it as much as I do.  The theme song, done by Limahl (the former lead singer of Kajagoogoo), is, IMO, excellent!   :)

I'm a fan of the original movie, but I didn't care much for the 2nd and haven't even bothered watching the 3rd.  Anyone here read the book?

Kryllith

p.s. Course, I've never watched the Teletubbies...

:D " The Never Ending Story", What a wonderful movie. I loved it.....the song, the fantasy, the STORY! We still watch it. The vhs tape is quite used, we play it so often. I highly recommend this to any age.....we are all kids!! I give this one 2 thumbs and 2 big toes up!

Word on that, Karen M.  I remember that this song was adjacent to "Destination Unknown" by Missing
Persons on a "Living In Oblivion" disc.

I loved the movie too.  I think it was total 80's fantasy film at it's best.  It was "different", true, but it was a wonderful movie, IMO.  Now, to people that see it for the first time today, it probably does seem outdated compared to modern fantasy films.  But for it's time...well to me it's a classic. My kids like it too, my daughter just loves the luck dragon.. but my son seems to really like the movie.  I've never seen the others, though my Dad bought part 2 by mistake, we've just never watched it.  I doubt that it will even come close to the original when we do see it.
And good call on the theme song by everyone who mentioned it.  That's one of my favorite parts of the movie!!  One of my favorite 80's songs, to be honest.  And boy, did I think Limahl was a cutie pie in that video.. :o

I read the book. It was okay, but very hard to follow--I think it had been translated from German, and it had a *lot* of stuff that didn't make it into the movie.

I liked this movie all right, but it doesn't compare to The Last Unicorn which I saw at about the same time. Better book, more cohesive story, better voice-acting, better theme song (in spite of the fact that it was sung by Kenny Loggins, who is terminally uncool).

Well, Loggins DID do a version of "The Last Unicorn", but he didn't sing the theme for the movie.  Every song in the movie was done by America (with the possible exception of the list of songs the butterfly sings.)

And yes, The Neverending Story is translated from German.

Michael Ende wrote it, I think. I read that book aeons ago.

Count me as one of those that loved the film. I was wondering, was the theme song ever played on the radio? If so, was it rarely played or did go on a loop for days? I don't recall ever hearing the song on the radio (the radio still doesn't play it)...

I've heard it played on the radio before, though only rarely (and I don't think I've heard it on air in over 15 years except on my show :P)....

The song got flogged on Australian radio so much that it may as well have been on continuous loop.

I never saw the movie because I got so sick of hearing the song !

Sounds from the above comments though that most people liked it.

Yipes. I stand corrected. I'm not familiar with America--are they also terminally uncool?

Not familiar with America?  I'm willing to bet you're more familiar with them than you think... See how many of these various lyrics you recognize (most are also the names of the songs).

"You see I've been through the desert on a horse with no name..."

"Ventura Highway in the sunshine.  Where the days are longer, the nights are stronger than moonshine..."

"You can do magic; you can have anything that you desire.  Magic, and you know you're the one that can put out the fire."

i loved 'the neverending story' when i was a kid...although i was disappointed when it did, indeed, end (hey, i was like, 8 or something).  i still watch it from time to time.  i never could figure out what bastian's mother's name was.  also, i was not aware that it was adapted from a book...i'll have to read it sometime.

i haven't seen any of the other parts to the movie...and it seems that i'm not missing out on much.

*edited because i inadvertantly put in smiley code...i didn't mean it, honest  :D  o.k.  that one is supposed to be there.

The name of Bastian's mother is Moonchild.  Btw, the book pretty much covers the first two movies. I can't remember whether the two stories actually flow right into one another or if there's a time gap...

Feh. Okay, yes, I do know those three songs. I have answered my own question about the terminally uncool thing.

I'm going to get myself in trouble here:

I didn't like this movie.  Never have, probably never will.  Didn't like the song either.  Something about them just really annoyed me...

TV9 - Whilst the song was bad, the accompanying film clip was worse

Wow, I'm surprised by the amount of people who didn't like it.  usually when I talk with people and this one comes up, everyone raves how they loved it.  I look at them like they're on druugs, and they do the same to me...
