Subject: Duran Duran or Spandau Ballet?

When I was at school you were either in to one or the other. So who was it for you.

On a purely retrospectical point of view, Spandau (sorry Chuck, I just don't remember hearing that many DD records on the radio)

:o

Oh, man. There's no comparison, IMO.

In reference to talent, good music, music success, video success, good looks, fan following, exposure, endurance.... Duran Duran is tops without a doubt.

Do get me wrong - I do like Spandau Ballet and all. But in a comparison with Duran Duran, they don't come even close.

That's just my opinion, of course.  :)

I forgot to add "style" to the list up there. Duran Duran are true 80's Icons by all accounts.

Even though I love Spandau Ballet's one big hit "True," I sort of liked Duran Duran better.  (I always considered Spandau Ballet a one-hit-wonder act since I really never heard anything else by them although on the "Living in Oblivion" CD series they did place at least two songs on it, one of them being "True.")

Definately Duran Duran.  Spandau Ballet only had the one hit that I knew of (True).  I love Duran Duran, their music is fun and good.  Plus, John Taylor....need I say more? ;D

Don't get me wrong I love the song True but you can never go wrong with DuranDuran! They are great artists and have such great talent and poetic abilities. Also agreeing with dagwood, John Taylor is hot or at least he was in the 80s! :)

There is absolutely no contest.  SB had "True."  DD came onto the scene in our area with "Hungry Like The Wolf" and just kept going from there.  DD wins, hands down.

I like them both but I would definitely have to say that I prefer Duran Duran.  Their music always makes me want to sing along and be taken back to my senior year in high school.  Gosh, I can't believe that's been 18 years already!   :o

I can see that in America Spandau obviously didn't really happen. In the U.K they and Duran Duran were more or less equal hit for hit.'True' was a fairly late release as it happens though the album 'True' was huge and had 4 or 5 hits off it here.

they had two hits in the US, "True" and "Gold".. I bought their greatest hits album a while back, and those were the only two songs I remembered.. I like them, but I think everyone here knows I'm without a shadow of a doubt a Duranie to the end. I even picked up an extra copy of "Sing Blue Silver" this weekend..

Quite right Gis - Spandau and Duran had about the same number of hits as each other in the UK.

True was a classic end of the youth club disco smoocher, but for me Duran just about shade it mainly due to the excellent  Planet Earth and that 'new romantic' line.

However I always thought it was more a case of being either a  Duranny or a Whamette (if that is the correct phrase for a collection of Wham groupies) ???

I would have to agree with Gis - in Aus they were hit for hit and certainly no one hit wonders.  In my singles collection I have most of the ones that charted high thru my highschool years:  Only When You Leave, Round and Round, I'll Fly For You, Gold, True, To Cut A Long Story Short, Lifeline, Communication.  Other than one or two of those listed - I hear the rest quite regularly - weekly if not daily - on my radio station and it isnt an 80's station.  I am racking my brain and I may have to have a good listen this week to confirm - but I don't recollect any Durany songs getting played on that station.

As for which one I picked - well I was madly in lust with the gorgeous brain tumour surviving Martin kemp - so Spandau was for me.  BUT what I have never admitted to my old school pals was that secretly taped behind my bedroom door was a giant poster of Simon Le bon !!!!!!!!!!!!

Duran Duran.... SB didn't get a lot of airplay where I lived (other than "True")

I used to get imported British music magazines, so while I had heard of Spandau Ballet, I never heard any of their music until long after I fell into lust and infatuation with DuranX2.  ;D

It was somehow easier for me to get hold of Duran Duran's first album, even though none of my friends had heard of them.  When they became hits with "Rio", (and a couple of other "good picks") my local record shop owner began buying according to some of my suggestions. 8)  8)  8)

When I finally heard "True" and "Gold" I liked them a lot   ;D(Especially "Gold"). I never heard anything by Spandau Ballet after that, leading many of us into the mistaken belief they were "one hit wonders".  :-/

Being in the U.S. (and given the fact that my brother is the biggest DD fan I've ever met) I naturally listened to a lot more Duran.  Still do actually (course they're still putting out albums).  As for Spandau Ballet, well I've actually been exposed to numerous songs by them (my favorites being "Round and Round" and "Instinction").  Course I'd rather listen to a-ha than either of them :P

I have to say Duran Duran. They are definitly one of the best bands of the 80's. Most of their eatly 80's stuff is fantastic. I do quite like Spandau Ballets stuff - but I'm not a big fan of 'True'. I prefer songs like 'Gold', 'Through the Barricades', 'Cut a long story short' and 'Musclebound'.

Speaking of groups that were bigger elsewhere...

You guys just reminded me that the group "Madness" was also bigger in the U.K. than over here in the U.S. They're the ones that do "Our House". Excellent song!

Back to topic-

"Gold" by SB is an excellent song too! The video leaves a lot to be desired though.  :-/

A few months ago I bought a book in the bargain bin at a mall bookstore called "Encyclopedia of Singles" that was printed in the UK.  The book lists 1,000 influential singles in alphabetical order.  There are singles that did well in the UK but not in the US, singles that did well in the US but not in the UK and a lot of surprises--UK acts that did well in the States but not in their homeland, and US acts that did well in Britain but not back home in the States!  I'm afraid Spandau Ballet and Madness were UK acts that did not meet with similar success in the States.  But I love their biggest Stateside hits (as well as the video to Madness's "Our House"!)

Well, I was not a "Duranie", as people seemed to call them.  Don't get me wrong, they had some cool songs, though I never bought an entire album.  (Until the early 90's when I bought a greatest hits collection).  I only owned one of their singles, which was "Save a Prayer", which is my personal favorite of their songs.  I do agree that they were a huge part of 80's music culture, even if I didn't go as nuts about them as some of the other kids at school.
I think Duran Duran was a much bigger part of the 80's music world than Spandau Ballet was, at least where I lived.  I did own the single of "True", and it is by far one of my favorite songs of the 80's..(though I really preferred it before every Tom, Dick, and Harry sampled it for "new" songs...but I digress... :-/ ) but to me they were, basically a one hit wonder.  Granted, I think some of the BEST songs of the 80's were just that, one hit wonders.  Now I do believe a group can get a following after one mega-huge hit, but they have to really have that little extra something to make you want to follow their careers (if they had one, LOL!) after radio quits doing so.
Basically I was interested in this topic just because comparing these two particular groups seemed really unusual to me, but after reading the huge differenced between here and the UK it did make a lot more sense!  :)

Yikes - I am enraged yet fascinated by the clear margin of D2 over SB.
Sure D2 had the hair, but SB had a ton of material that apparently didn't
filter down to the majority.  I think that SB's "Instinction" was one of the
quintessential songs of the 80s, although that is subject to some debate,
even from me.

Duran Duran, easily.  I think you'd be hard pressed to find Americans who aren't hardcore 80's fans who could tell you anything Spandau Ballet did other than 'True'.  The only other songs of their I know are 'True' and 'I Don't Need This Pressure On'.

It's odd how some groups are/were big on only one side of the Atlantic.  I went to Ireland late in '99 and to that point, had no idea how successful Kylie Minogue or Robbie Williams was.
I heard Kylie's new single on the radio in So. Florida a few weeks back; this song is the first song of hers I've heard on American radio since the 80's.

I also lucked out and went to an 80's night while in Ireland.
I knew all the songs the DJ played except a Mel & Kim song.
And the DJ actually played 4 or 5 slow songs, and when he played 'Rock the Boat' (a late 70's song, I think) everyone sat on the floor and went though the motions of rowing a boat..??
It was hilarious.

DURAN, no contest!  John Taylor was my first crush, and Nick Rhodes is my musical idol, not to mention he wears makeup very well.  ;)  There are not many albums that I can listen to without skipping at least one song, but "Rio" is one I never have to interrupt.  From the title track to "The Chauffeur," every song is amazing.  I can't wait until the new album comes out.  It's going to be insane when Nick, Simon, John (roar!), Andy, and Roger go on tour again.  I was too young to see them in concert when they were blazing up the charts with "Hungry Like the Wolf," "Union of the Snake," and "Is There Something I Should Know."  The video for "The Reflex" is the closest I have ever been to seeing them live.  I'm hoping they will head to the Northwest during their tour.  *crosses fingers*

I managed to catch them live at an Accoustic Jam in Los Angeles in the early '90s.  The really weird thing about it is right before I got to the concert, I heard "Ordinary World" on the radio for the first time (it had just been released, not even sure the "Wedding" album was out yet).  Course, I missed Andy and Roger...
