Subject: Duos and Duets in the 80's

Written By: Criz on 01/28/02 at 12:34 a.m.

Is it me, or are there hardly ever any duos around anymore? Duets are always around in the present day, but you never seem to get two-somes anymore in music, unlike the 80's. There was Hall & Oats, Dollar, Mel & Kim, Pet Shop Boys to name but a few. Can anyone think of any more and any famous duets of the deacde?

Wham!  (George Michael & Andrew Ridgely)

Sly Fox

Roxette

Oh, now my mind's gone blank!  :(  It seems to me there were more duos in the 70's....such as England Dan & John Ford Coley, Seals & Crofts, LeBlanc & Carr, etc.

I'm guessing you're talking about actual duets.. that performed primarily as duets and not as individuals or groups of other bands.  But the ones I would have mention have already been done, so I'll have to go the other route... Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson; Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder to start...

Jimmy Somerville(Bronski Beat) and Marc Almond(Soft Cell) with a duet of "I Feel Love" and other disco songs. There's a duet for you. ;) The Beavis and Butt-head Do America soundtrack has a duet of two bands doing the song "I Wanna Riot"(Rancid & Stubborn All-Stars). And if you think duets are dead, you forgot that the original live version of "Outside" was by Aaron Lewis & Fred Durst, not necessarily by Staind.

Ashford & Simpson go back to the '60s as a songwriting team, but indeed it was "Solid" (1985) that made their name known to the public.
I used to see Pepsi of Pepsi & Shirley spelled "Pepsii."  Perhaps they received a friendly phone call from Pepsi Co.

As for '80s duos, let's not forget
NAKED EYES(Pete Byrne/Rob Fisher)
who had a hit with another duo's song, Burt Bacharach & Hal David's "Always Something There to Remind Me."  I preferred "When the Lights Go Out," "Promises Promises," and "In the Name of Love." Rob Fisher was later in another duo, with Simon Climie, as Climie Fisher.  I remember their song "Love Changes (Everything)"

There was also--
Salt & Pepa
Double (doo-blay)
Ebn Ozn
Yello
Haysi Fantayzee (basically a duo)
Q-Feel (duo, I think) "Dancing in Heaven (Oribital Be-Bop)"
Sparks (Predates the '80s, but still very '80s)

Somebody mentioned Erasure, but nobody mentioned
YAZOO
Vince Clarke & Alison Moyet.  Superb but so sadly short lived. :'(
In 1984, Vince Clarke released a single single with Feargal Sharkey as The Assembly, "Never Never."

Feargal Sharkey: Gaelic for "beware of carnivorous sea creatures."

Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark!

Technically the duo of Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys. They did have a backup band though.

I would have mentioned Yazoo, Maxwell, but you beat me to it. ;) :P ;D

Well, most of the duos I could think of were mentioned, but  I will add Eurythmics and Wendy & Lisa.  There were a few duets that need mentioned also...

Stop Draggin' My Heart Around - Tom Petty & Stevie Nicks
Leather and Lace - Don Henley & Stevie Nicks
Almost Paradise - Mike Reno & Ann Wilson
Surrender To Me - Robin Zander & Ann Wilson
Suddenly - Olivia Newton John & Cliff Richard
Are You Ready - KC & Teri Disario
Endless Love - Lionel Richie & Diana Ross
Separate Lives - Phil Collins & Marilyn Martin
Long Long Way to Go - Phil Collins & Sting
Baby, Come To Me - James Ingram & Patti Austin
Yah Mo B There - James Ingram & Michael McDonald
On My Own - Michael McDonald & Patti Labelle
Don't Fight It - Steve Perry & Kenny Loggins
I Just Can't Stop Loving You - Michael Jackson & Siedah Garrett
Take Me Home Tonight - Eddie Money & Ronnie Spector

I considered OMD because they started with the core duo of Humphreys & McCluskey, and H&M wrote most of the material.  However, percussionist Malcolm Holmes & sax player Martin Cooper were all their LPs from "Orchestral Manoeuvres" to "The Pacific Age."*  Like OMD, many "duos," such as Eurythmics and Tears for Fears, use session musicians and touring bands, but the integrity of Holmes & Cooper to OMD disqualifies them from duo-hood in my book!
Humphreys quit the band circa 1988, but McCluskey has persevered with his own lackluster version of OMD.
*Cooper doesn't appear on "Organisation," but Holmes does.

Tears For Fears
Why didn't I think of that before?

Here's another of my favorite '80s duos
Blancmange
Talk about using session musicians, Blancmange used over 20 session musicians on their final album, "Believe You Me"! (1985)
Another BIG favorite of mine is an obscure English duo called
Eyeless In Gaza
An excellent experimental pop duo of Martyn Bates & Peter Becker formed in 1980.  They're too diverse and exciting for me to try to describe succinctly, so I recommend you check out the link:
http://www.eyelessingaza.com/eigbio.html
E.I.G. may be a band you always wanted to hear!

I thought of KRAFTWERK, but there are two problems.  Kraftwerk did their best work in the '70s, though their influence on '80s music is almost incalculable.  While the core of Kraftwerk is Ralf Hutter and Florian Schneider, the band always consisted of Hutter, Schneider, and two or three others.  However, adjunct members such as Wolfgang Flur and Karl Bartos often felt like Kraftwerk was duo.  They felt Hutter & Schneider took all the credit and consigned them to be underpaid employees of Kling Klang Studios!

Another 80's duo was The Associates who consisted of Billy Mackenzie and Alan Rankine. Others that come to mind that I don't think have been mentioned are:

Bros (sort of)
The Communards
Boy Meets Girl
Go West
Jon & Vangelis
Kon Kan
Philip Oakey & Giorgio Moroder
Strawberry Switchblade

True per the credits on the single.  And if Clarke had proceeded with The Assembly, the other core member would have been Radcliffe.  The intention was a series of collaboration featuring Clarke, Radcliffe, and a guest vocalist.  I wish it had continued.  It would have been great to hear maybe Paul Young or Paul Weller for the next Assembly song.
I see two reasons why Clarke would have scrapped The Assembly.
1. Conceptually, the Assembly was limited to the studio
2. The project would be difficult to market because of the changing personnel.
3. They'd end up constantly wrangling with other people's record labels, other people's contracts, and other people's paperwork.
Erasure with Andy Bell sounded like a much better proposition, and it certainly turned out to be just that!

Would Timbuk 3 be considered a duo? That group mainly consisted of a husband/wife pair (whose names escape me at the moment); sadly though I heard they got divorced in the 90's.
