Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Especially Roxy Music. I mean, how long have these guys been around? '74, I think, was when their debut album came out. Their 1982 album, Avalon, is a must for any fan of 80s music. Again, another breakthrough band that remains wholly ignored. It just makes me wonder: was I the only one listening to this stuff and supporting the career of these artists? And what exactly were clubs playing after the unceremonius death of Disco? (It would be hilarious to find out clubs and discotheques were playing Poison to American audiences... ::) )

You're very welcome, Tarzan Boy!

I do know exactly what you mean - some of those bands were fantastic and I'm not really into the whole soft rock that was very apparent in the early 80's, or the hair metal. It's new wave, synth pop mainly for me!! Also some alt stuff, like The Smiths, REM, Replacements - but thats another story :)

...and what about Icehouse, The Tubes, and Ultravox?

Kudos to Banasy for mentioning Ultravox. Aaaaah, it's great to know I'm not alone in actually liking this stuff. Ultravox was awesome and is one of the few bands which, I think, used an actual theremin (for their song "Reap the Wild Wind"). Theremin users, I thought, were only minor up to that point, unless one counts cheapie sci-fi flix from the 50s and 60s. Not only that, but Midge Ure and another bandmate (forgot his name) also collaborated with model, turned vocalist, Steve Strange in a project called Visage (loved their music!).

On a similar note, I forgot to mention another very important New Wave band - Japan (!!!!!). God! How could I forget this great band? They came around the same time Ultravox! did (some time int he late 70s) and can truly be called New Wave - just listen to some of their early work: synthesizers with punk vocals! "Quiet Life" (from 1980) is probably their best representative song, IMO although their sound changed from their late 70s angsty to early 80s sultry (think of a strange mix of Roxy Music and Duran Duran). David Sylvan and Mick Karn went on to solo careers (much like M. Ure). Man! I could go rambling on about this. Well, at least there won't be any complaints about not mentioning certain bands (and this thread gives me the opportunity to do so).

Oh yeah, what about Sparks? How could I forget The Sparks brothers? Great band. Been around as long as Roxy Music too and, no, they have a whole bunch a good songs besides "Cool Places" and "Music That You Can Dance To."

I was watching part of a VH1 Behind The Music about Poison and it just proved my theory that the 80s went downhill as soon as these Fluff Rockers started selling albums around the mid-80s...go figure ::) They actually did play them at clubs. Sad, very sad, is all I have to say on that matter.

Portion Control ("The Great Divide")
Bill Nelson ("Empire of the Senses")
Peter Godwin ("Images of Heaven")
Bobby "O" ("I'm So Hot 4 U," "She Has A Way" and producer/mixer of the original version of PSB's "West End Girls")

The Vapours

Aztec Camera ( Apart from Bobo - as I know he adores 'Somewhere In My Heart' ;) )
Frankie Goes To Hollywood ( How influential and provocative, yet rarely mentioned!?)
Billy Idol ( Yes, even Billy Idol!)

All I can think of for now :)

Banasy !

You mean as in the Australian Band Icehouse ?  I'm impressed that they found their way to Indiana.

If so, they were one of THE oz bands of the 80s and early 90's.  Their lead singer, Iva Davies, used to be criticised for sounding like David Bowie.

The quote at the bottom of all my posts, Great Southern Land, I think should replace Advance Australia Fair as our National Anthem.    8)

I surprised no one mentioned the Monroes--"What do all the people know", perhaps one the best one hit wonders from the eighties. Also, Softcell's "Tainted Love".

Peter Shilling
Adam Ant (or And the Ants, depending)
Siouxsie & the Banshees
Lene Lovich

And Tony Carey's solo work...either as himself or with the Planet P Project

And what about the Culture Club?  Boy George gets metioned a lot, but the rest of the band?

Good call on Yaz(oo)...heck, even in the 80's I had no clue who they were.  Stations in So. Florida would play 'Situation' during late night re-mixes, and never announce who did the song or what it was called.  We always called it 'The Move-Out Song'.

Only after I got to college did I hear the 'Upstairs at Eric's' CD, which a roommate owned (great cover, BTW).  Loved it and got it through BMG :-).

Erasure is another little talked-about band whose music I really like.  Their 'Pop!  The first 20 hits' is one of my fave greatest hit CD's.

Lots o' rap/funk acts - Run DMC, Rick James, LL Cool J, The Time - don't get a lot of pub here, either.

LOL! What, you think us Yanks never heard of Midnight Oil, Billy Thorpe, Mi-Sex, Flash and the Pan, Moving Pictures, The Sherbs (Sherbet), The Church, Divinyls, Mental as Anything, Cold Chisel, Mondo Rock, Real Life, The Models, The Sports, Eurogliders, Skyhooks, TMG, Angel City (The Angels), Choirboys, Wa Wa Nee, Pseudo Echo, etc., etc., etc.??? :) Believe it or not, most of these (including Icehouse) saw most or all of their albums come out here in the States, too, and landed at least one hit on the American charts. Aussies definitely made inroads here in the late '70s and throughout the '80s - and most of it was quite good! :)

BTW, "Great Southern Land" is probably my favorite Icehouse tune as well - even have the video... :)

Well no - it's - how you say ?  It's a lot easier to notice what's coming over here than it is to know what's going over there, if you take my meaning.

I suggest that the period and the bands you mentioned though probably covers the best period/best bands.

Some of the stuff they produced was simply fantastic but with one or two exceptions it has really fallen away.

As a side note, in recent times the lead singers of both Mi-Sex and Skyhooks were killed in a car crash and helicopter crash respectively.  Both very tragic ....  :'(

Knew about Skyhooks, but not Mi-Sex. Also heard about the fairly recent passing of the lead singer of NZ band Dragon (Marc Hunter). Sad, indeed... :(
