Subject: What leisure time did you enjoyy??

Written By: pokey on 04/29/02 at 08:30 p.m.

Leisure time........i really enjoyed being in the company of all my friends. We always had lotz of things to talk and laugh about. We frequently took walks to town and back during the summer when school was out. I guess it would be something like 4 km a day.........i was in such excellent shape back then....suddenly along came gravity, old age, quit smoking, and gaining weight........but hey we've all done it!
Keep on smilin' ;D

I HATE gravity!  Although I NEVER smoked (Anything) I drink....I can still run 5 miles in 30 minutes or less (Remember the Domino's slogan?) but am out of shape...the cutting down starts May 1 and I am also going to start working out at the gym again :)

Let's see...this is the 80's board, right? 80's leisure time. Hmmmm. That would primarily consist of smoking cloves and hanging out in "paranoia park" frightening the general populace. And watching "Duck Tails".

In the early days of MTV, the friends and I spent countless hours in the summer watching videos and trading baseball cards.  "Oh, cool, 'White Wedding' is on again...I'll trade ya an '82 Schmidt and '80 Rose for that '75 Dave Parker!"   If only I had sold those cards when the market was ripe...;-).

As I got older and my world was allowed to expand beyond the boundries of my neighborhood, went to the beach a lot (when in South Florida) and to some of the parks in other towns to play b-ball, tennis, etc.   My world revolved around sports and da beach, and I loved it that way.

I guess my favorite leasure activity back in the day was hanging out with friends either in the woods or  the beach at night with a good blaze going listening to music and drinking or partaking (did I spell that right?) in other illegal substances.

In the summer, watching tv and working....during the school year (after homework, of course ::)) we would hang out at the coffee shop.  I am surprised I ever slept.

I loved going down to my Grandfather's shop. He fixed outboard boat motors for a living. His shop was right next to the harbor and the Yacht Club. I could do whatever I wanted down there because everyone knew my Grandfather. I could go into his boat store where he sold accessories for boats and play with whatever I wanted to. I loved blasting the airhorns. I was even allowed in the Yacht Club's bar, the only child allowed to go in there without an adult. I have some happy memories of those times. Sadly, he died in '91, and his shop was sold. That was the way I loved to spend my leisure time when I was a kid. I miss you, Grandpa. :'(

I had to reply to this. Your last line really touched me. Very sweet. I too was very attached to my maternal grandparents. They are no longer with us.

On hot, summer nights, we would all hand out on my (actually my girl friend's) front porch. Most of the time, we all played dominoes or Monopoly with her dad, who was fighting cancer.  The rest of the time we played "street frisbee" and gossiped.  All the kids in the neighborhood were allowed to hang out at our house, even past what would normally be curfew time because there were two chaperones on duty.

We didn't care, because we never felt chaperoned.  My friend's mom was 60% deaf, and could not hear any of the conversations, no matter how "naughty".  My mom (it was a three-family house) was the "official" chaperone.  She only bothered us if she heard anything that sounded like bloodshed, or smelled anything illegal being smoked.  She would gossip along with us, and was so totally non-judgemental we considered her one of us.  She was the official "cool mom" who would let us get away with almost anything.

At other times, with a different group of friends, we would rent and watch really, (really!) bad movies, and/or play role-playing games.  We played Marvel's Super-Heroes, Paranoia, Tunnels and Trolls and a verson of D&D.

If there weren't any bad movies on, it was MTV.

When I was alone, usually practicing mixes in my room (geez, I still do that!) or watching MTV.

With friends, a lot of time was spent hanging out at the mall, playing volleyball or going to get coffee; My senior year of high school I spent a lot of weekend nights with friends drinking either at house parties or desert parties.

I usually listened to my tapes and worked on my Heavy Metal scrapbook' Which I still have. :)  I also used to like to sit for hours and try new makeup looks.  :P   Finally, i would make clothes for my Barbie's. They were not the best but I tried.   ;)

WAIT A GOSH DARNED MINUTE! That's like, ten miles an hour for half an hour! I can only sprint 10.2, and that's for all of two minutes! And being unemployed leaves me a lot of time in the gym...

I don't buy it. Or you're gonna keel over. Or you're seven feet tall.
