Subject: That 80's Show..Like It Or Not

Written By: RockandRollFan on 05/01/02 at 05:37 p.m.

There were a few topics out there over the last few months that were swept away during the "Crash of '01" so, once again, what are your reactions to the show so far.... I think it started of VERY slowly, so much so, that I really thought it would be cancelled...now I would have to say that it's improved quite a bit and it may just survive.  It's still, IMHO, not even CLOSE to being as popular as That 70's Showbut I really do hope it comes back next season.  Okay, your turn ;)

I tried to watch it when the show first started. I even taped it when I was working but after watching it a couple of times, I decided that I wasn't missing anything. But I will be watching tonight just to see John Taylor!  ;D

"That 80's Show" fails to incite laughter the way "That 70's Show" did in the earlier episodes. But I think changes in writers and cast will improve "80's" . But this some of that stems from some people believing what Reagan did to the poor is not at all funny. (And where are the blacks in either one of these shows?  ??? )

It's getting better. It sucked at first though.

J.C. - I think 'That 80's Show' producers think having a bisexual and an Asian who isn't sterotyped as Asian equals diversity.

The whole nostalgia of 80's pop culture never seems to include much in the way of non-white interests.  Yeah, there's some exceptions - notably Michael & Janet Jackson, Prince, etc. - but for the most part, '80's music' as marketed by radio stations, clubs & such is targeted solely at white folk.
Which is a shame 'cause not only is portraying the 80's as so overwhelmingly white not accurate, it misses a chance to connect with an audience that *does* appreciate rap, hip hop & R & B from that era.

Oh, never did answer the question that started this thread...;-).

The show's getting better.  At first I thought it was a real stinker, and while it's far from a good show (too much inconsistancy, like the last show - started off fairly strong, then all downhill from there...except for the Margaret-Pat Benatar ending), the characters are progressing.  RT and Sophia are at least tolerable now.  Roger, Katie and Margaret are good characters.  Tuesday and Corey really annoyed me at first but they're getting to be somewhat likeable.

I feel that "That 70's show" is a comedy that takes place in the 70s,  not a comedy that makes fun of the 70's.  Where as "that 80's show" is a comedy that makes fun of the 80's. I've only seen a couple episodes.  If they want ratings to improve they need to change the time slot.  There is better shows to watch on wensday night (ED, Robotica, Junkyard Wars, Amazing Race).

I agree with screwball.  I have watched 4 episodes on different weeks, and I still don't like it much.  It's like they took everything that made the 80's---styles, music, events, and rolled it into one year.

But there's reason for that, Screwball. Hollywood still views the 80's as the Decade of Decadence, where President Reagan allegedly stole from the poor to give to the rich. Thus, these producers would rather mock the 80s than to pay homage to it. And I can't agree with you that there is anything good to watch on Wednesdays other than Thw Weather Channel's "Atmospheres".

I really enjoyed Debbie Gibson being on last night!  I do agree that the show needs a LOT of improvement but it's getting better.
