I don't know about overall music groups, but Huey Lewis did quite well in 1985, given that both "The Power of Love" and "Back in Time" were released on the Back to the Future soundtrack...

I can help you with song the number one song for the week of jan 24th was "like a Virgin" by Madona. But that song started it's #1 riegn in 1984.  the First #1 of 1985 was "I want to know what Love Is" by Foriegner  but it didn't reach #1 till 2/2/1985.  The top male artist of 1985 was Phill Collins. The top Female artist was Madona and the top Group was Tears For Fears.  Hope this helps.

I agree, I'm only 25. But, think about how the 24-25 year olds felt when we were in school.

Well, I was a boy in 1985 and my clothing consisted mainly of OP (Ocean Pacific) & PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) shirts, shorts and pants.  Bugle Boy (insert sound of bugle here) began making appearances in my wardrobe.  Also got my first pair of Reeboks that year.

My dad bought me 3 pairs of Momentum jeans in '85...but I wouldn't classify that as 'the style' as dad just bought me whatever 'dungarees' he could find for $6.  Most kids whose parents considered their childrens' fashion sense had better jeans as well as Members Only jackets.

I was in highschool in 1985. I remember white Cappezio shoes were big with guys as well as knit ties. Maybe it was a New York thing.

The clothes I remember a lot were Op (Ocean Pacific) T-shirts.  They had "surfer" motifs on them, with most of the shirts in very bright colors - hot pink, sky blue and neon yellow.  I must have gone through several of those shirts!

Nike hi-tops were just starting to make an impact on fashion, too.  The old-style hi-tops were VERY high - they almost looked like moon boots!  People usually left the top 3 - 4 eyelets unlaced, and some didn't even use laces!

One big deal for rock n' rollers in 1985 was the re-vamping of Van Halen.  David Lee Roth was out and Sammy Hagar was in.  Their first album with Sammy, "5150" did quite well.

I'd have to think harder and clearer to recall exactly what was "hot" in '85 specifically (I was not - actually, that was the year where half was sedate and conservative, the last half was freaked out!  Some kind of average in there....).  For ex, I don't think what I wore was really "everywhere", just sorta.  So I'd have to really think back.

But, I do know this about us GIRLS:  by now, neon colors were in, bright pastels were starting, prints of various kinds were around, and you bought all of it at the Limited (all for shirts *and* pants).

Live Aid was a concert in Philly and London. Very big deal..raised a ton of money.

The Cosby Show was very popular.

Groups like "Tears for Fears" and "Wham!" and "Huey Lewis and the News" were really popular.

"Where's the beef" was a popular phrase based on the Wendy's commercial.

As well as fashions...well i wore polo shirts and jordash jeans most of the time. Sometimes i wore a white shirt with a yellow vest and a yellow tie to match... and the like.

Everything is split for me in '85.  I went to two different elementary schools that year and there was sort of a big difference in the way everyone dressed.  1/2 the year(beginning) in 5th grade, we were still little girls wearing dresses and into really girly girl things, and when we moved the girls in the new school were more mature.  Dressing very in, with mtv being a big influence.   The bright pastels were very in at the new school.

All this talk about Ocean Pacific clothes reminds me that Panama Jack shirts and Hawaiian shirts were also popular. You wore then with jeans or slacks rolled and tucked at the ankles and "boat" shoes (a kind of loafers)  with no socks.

Junior High just came crashing back to me.  :'(

I used to have this list broken down by year, but the year ranges are in there (might take a little work on your part to try and narrow the list down)

I also wanted to add:  girls' leather ties were dying out if not dead and so was the more square preppy look altogether.

And to be specific, you bought FORENZA clothes at the Limited.
