Subject: Save the Perth Entertainment Centre

Written By: BrianMannixGirl on 05/04/02 at 07:33 a.m.

At some stage or another you may have lived, worked, visited, performed, promoted, or known someone in Perth !

You may or may not be aware of Channel 7’s recent announcement that, as the owners of the Perth Entertainment Centre (PEC), they plan to demolish the centre and replace it with something Perth already has plenty of – office towers and shops.

At some stage in our life many of us have entertained or been entertained at the PEC.  If you are as horrified as I am at the thought of Perth losing an 8500 seat venue then please visit this website via the link below and leave your thoughts and memories in the guestbook.  I will then send the webpage to Channel 7 as a petition against the demolition of the PEC.

Please pass this on to your Perth friends, whether they still live here or not !

Thanks for your time and your support

Aphasia - hope you have a few hundred pals you can forward the link to.  I have sent it to hundreds of entertainers and promoters as well as all my friends.  The EntCent was my home away from home in the 80's - I cant watch it get destroyed.

Hi there BM Girl!!! I haven't see you in forever! I am sorry to hear about the proposed demolition of the Perth Entertainment Center. I hope that you are able to put a stop to the plans. I know how heartbreaking it can be when a special place from your youth that has so many memories is torn down...  :-[

Hiya 80'sTriv.

Yes it has been a while.  I have been lurking but not posting much as my computer lost all my passwords etc - so everywhere I went I was back to being a guest !

Thanks for your vote of confidence on my little project.  Its not just because I have great memories of the EntCent that I want it saved - what most people wouldnt realise it that it is our only one here !  As I mention on the website - there is a superdome that holds 20,000 but it is such a revolting building in so many ways that it is being demolished and no-one will miss it.  They are talking of replacing it with a 10,000 seat tennis centre for a tournament held for 2 weeks once a year - it will most likely have no roof - which still gives us no enclosed centre for concerts.  In 2004 a huge convention centre is being built - and it will have a performing arts theatre - but that will only hold a maximum of 3000.  We are a city of over 1.5mil people.  Surely we deserve a measely 8500 seater entertainment centre !

Anyway - back to the emailing of lots of useful people !!!!  Got a couple of news stations interested in the story.  Work to do - people to grovel to !

Hi Brian mannix gal!
I just emailed the link to 200 or so of my friends!

Thanks for bringing it to my attention! The PEC sits across the road from my office door! The idea to bulldoze it is dreadful!

Talk to you soon,
Dim

200 !!!!!!  Phas you are a legend !  Thanks for spreading the word.

I got some extremely well known singer/actors to start the word around the aussie music industry, and I have sent an email to Rove - being the ole Perth boy he is !  Also sent it to every single solitary promoter in Aus !

I just noticed your doorway is literally directly opposite the back of PEC - You will have to add to my next vote - that being "Now that we have saved it - can we paint it a better colour !".

I see BrianMannixGirl has started posting again, so it reminded me of a news article on TV last night.

Unless something drastic happens, the PEC has hosted its final gig. Apparently the place has been losing money for a couple of years, and the same for the Burswood Dome.

Looks like you guys will have to come over to the East Coast to see big acts in the future...  :(

I didn't see this on the website, but how are you planning to save it?  I hate to be a downer, but Another point is that chanel 7 is not going to opperate it or run shows if they are not allowed to demolish it, so it would just sit there empty. Win or loose, the  shows look to be gone, no mater what.

That is sad that they are tearing down the centre. And it's a very long drive from Perth to see a concert in Sydney or Melbourne!

Hiya mrgazpacho,  I didnt really go away !!!  Well  did have two weeks in Sydney - followed by 3 weeks of being computerless after my hard drive blew up.  So now I have a brand new puter to play with.

It was so sad to see the article on the news that night following the announcement that no further bookings were being taken.  I have three more news articles to scan and put on the webpage.

The Dome is already on the demolition list - and there will be no loss there - you couldn't pay me enough to watch a show there.  the acoustics are positively foul.

My fav radio station had a phone in on monday - "what were your fav memories of the Ent Cent" - it was great to listen to and so many people called in.

Screwball54 - What I personally have been doing (and judging by the amount of emails I have recvd on the subject - so are a lot of other people) is emailing the Perth City Council day after day reminding them of the effects of not having any international or Aussie acts coming to Perth.  Channel 7 have yet to submit their proposed plans to the council for approval, but when they do - I hope that all the members of the council have sat back and really thought about all the times they have enjoyed a show there, and that their kids and friends have hassled them into making the right decision for Perth.

80's Triv - yep - very long drive - Thank gawd for Virgin Airlines.  I have already decided to fly to Adelaide to see my fav artist next Feb as I point blank refuse to see him at the Dome and have my memory of his retirement concert ruined by bad acoustics !!!  I have flown to Sydney twice and Melbourne once in the past 8 months to see shows - so I am use to having to go east.  But its an expensive habit !!!!

Hi there BM Girl!!! It's great to know that you are doing fine. I was impressed to hear of all the hard work you've been doing to try and save the entertainment centre, even if it has been in vain. It's also great to hear that you've been able to fly off to Adelaide or Sydney to catch a boss show or two!!! :)
