Someone already gave the correct answer and you called her wrong!  Dionne Warwick recorded this first.  In the early 1970's it was covered by R. B. Greaves (a followup to "Take a Letter, Maria").  Who were you thinking of?  (BTW, Naked Eyes followed up "Always Something There" with "Promises, Promises", also the title of a Dionne Warwick song, but not the same as the Dionne Warwick song.)

I was thinking of Sandie Shaw.

Dionne Warwick released the song in August 1965, and Sandie Shaw released it in 1964, so she was the original artist. Damn - I just gave you all the correct answer, oh well! :)

Also, DJ Midas's and macdaddys answers are both correct.

But since the song was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, Dionne Warwick had the first crack at their material, and a lot of her big hits on Scepter in the 1960's were written by Bacharach and David.  Cilla Black had a monster hit in England with "Anyone Who Had a Heart" but in the States, Dionne Warwick's version ruled.  Maybe Dionne's version came out in England in 1965 after Sandie Shaw's British cover charted, but in the States, Dionne Warwick's version is considered the original.

The song was released in America in 1965, I don't know when it was released in the UK. I know this due to the document in which i found the information off. When you write the date in digits, we do it a different way around to people in the states. For example, the date today is 6/5/02. Sandy Shaw's version only reached number 52 in the Billboard charts, and then a year later Dionne Warwick released it and had much bigger success, that's probably why it is considered as the original.

I think that's them all answered correctly except for:

23) Who sang 'The Harder I Try'?

(Maybe this is tough beacuse it was by a British band - I have no idea if they had any sucess in the States!)

A song called "The Harder I Try" was recorded by "Love Potion". Whether this is the answer, I do not know.

20.   Robert Smith was in which band before ‘The Cure’?End Quote

I saw that someone answered Siouxsie & the Banshees. But that's wrong. When he joined S&TB, he had already The cure and kept working with *both* bands.
The band that he worked before the Cure really existed, was called MALICE. I read in a biographic book and found something online:

"a group that Robert Smith and two other classmates from school, Lawrence Tolhurst and Michael Dempsey, put together in 1976, performing David Bowie and Jimi Hendrix covers. At the time, Smith refused to sing because he felt that his voice was not good enough. Eventually, they renamed themselves Easy Cure (after a song written by Tolhurst) and then finally The Cure in 1978"
