Subject: Why I don't think highly of VH-1's lists...

Written By: ChuckyG on 05/07/02 at 01:48 p.m.

http://www.vh1.com/shows/series/100_greatest/one_hit_wonders/list_100-81.jhtml

the 100 greatest one hit wonders.. currently being shown this week.. very, very lame..

for some reason, they always forget that Men Without Hats had two hits, "Safety Dance" and "Pop Goes The World".. a quick look through the list of 80s stuff shows a few other glaring mistakes.. they claim their critera was only one hit to make the top 40, but I know for fact "Pop Goes the World" made it to 20..

do these people even bother to do research? I could come up with a more accurate list quicker than these people.. (I'd post one, but VH-1 has a history of "borrowing" from the site and never giving credit where credit is due)

Wow, Chucky I think you just ticked them off.   ;) I clicked on the link, and after reading it tried to go to the second page.

I got an error message telling me the page was no longer available due to the "recent redesign" of the site.  When I tried to click the "back" button, I got the same message.

I did some noodling around, and for me at least, I have to go to the home page first, before I can get beyond the first page of songs.

Well, I can see by their list that I didn't miss anything important last night. And here I was kicking myself because I forgot that it was on! Their choice for #1 sucks!

Now, I am not sure what made it to the top 40 after Round and Round. But, they did have more than one song on the radio.

"Lay it Down" made the Top 40 as well, peaking at #40.

Wow, Chucky...that's very interesting what you said about VH-1 "borrowing" from your site.  What kind of info have they used?  You would think that with all their writers they would be able to do the research (albeit accurate) themselves.  Shame, shame!

Like you, I was also surprised to see them calling Men Without Hats a one-hit-wonder.  Number 20 is pretty high!  I automatically write-off those that had more than one Top 40 hit.  I think all of us here could certainly have come up with a better list!  ;)

Tell me about it.  Where do they come up with that for #1??  I would put that as #100.. I can somewhat agree with the other Top 10 except for #6..

Subject: Re: Why I don't think highly of VH-1's lists...

If you want my opinion, at least 15 of those songs don't even belong on that list beacuse in my book, they're not one-hit-wonders! But, that's just my knowledge of British charts flooding into the brain :) . If they were to pick a so callled one-hit-wonder for the Billboard charts, it has to be the number 2 record, 'Tainted Love' without a doubt.

Well, aside from the factual inaccuracies of what VH-1 classifies as a 'One-Hit Wonder', I won't watch their Top 100 'cause I don't wanna have to put up with whatever half-@ss witty banter their guest host will spew prior to each video.
More VH-1 Classic, please!

Chucky - can ya give a few examples of what they've borrowed from the site w/o giving credit?

Aside from the inaccuracies -

My biggest complaint is, IMO, they're all in the wrong order.

"Macarena" #1? ? ?

It's good but I can think of better, much better to fit the top bill.

I'd even put Van McCoy's "The Hustle" ahead of "The Macarena" anyday!

Here are some I disagree on:

89. "Achy Breaky Heart" by Billy Ray Cyrus (1992)

So he had this one pop hit.  Didn't they bother to check the country charts?

85.  "Spirit In The Sky" by Norman Greenbaum (1970)

He followed that up with "Canned Ham."  Wasn't a big hit, though.

80.  "Cum On Feel The Noize" by Quiet Riot (1983)

Don't they know about "Bang Your Head (Metal Health)" and their other Slade remake, "Mama Weer All Crazee Now"?

73.  "Convoy" by C.W. McCall (1975)

Hey, why don't you check the country charts!

57.  "Smokin' In The Boys Room" by Brownsville Station (1973)

In 1977 they had a minor hit with a novelty record, "Martian Boogie."

44.  "Rock Me Amadeus" by Falco (1986)

What?  No sprechen Sie Deutsch?  What about the original version of "Der Kommissar" and the followup to "Amadeus," "Vienna Calling"?

41.  "Relax" by Frankie Goes To Hollywood (1985)

What about "Two Tribes"?

23.  "Tubthumping" by Chumbawumba (1997)

Believe it or not, I liked the followup, "Amnesia," better…

17.  "We're Not Gonna Take It" by Twisted Sister (1984)

And what about "I Wanna Rock"?

15.  "96 Tears" by ? And The Mysterians (1966)

Don't you know they did the original version of Smash Mouth's "Can't Get Enough of You Baby"?

8.  "Take On Me" by A-Ha (1985)

"The Sun Always Shines on TV."  The theme from the James Bond movie "The Living Daylights."  Need I say more?

But at least they didn't mention Strawberry Alarm Clock or Steam, who did follow up their hits; Strawberry Alarm Clock followed up "Incense & Peppermints" with "Tomorrow" and Steam followed up "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye" with "I've Gotta Make You Love Me."  Two songs that have almost been lost to history…

the most obvious example would be their usage of my top 5 masturbation songs of the 80s for their pop up videos segment "self love songs", which used 4 out of the five on my list, in the same order too if I'm not mistaken.. (they replaced my #1 with Peter Gabriel's "Shock the Monkey" which has nothing to do with it)..

their "Where are they know" people actually called me once looking for more info than what was on the site. I wasn't too eager to talk to them, since I'm sure they've raided that portion of the site as much as they could in the past.. they were pretty rude on the phone too..

so yeah, I'm not that big a VH-1 fan anymore.. the only reason I even started this thread, was a friend of mine brought it up this weekend, and I told him they'd probably include a few that were certainly not 1 hit wonders, because they always do.. and even he spotted the obvious examples..

Get this, During the show they said Men Without Hats Had A minor hit in '87 with "Pop goes the world" so according to them #20 is a minor hit (I guess "Jeremy" by pearl jam was minor hit as well).  They also claim some others on the countdown had minor hits.

They wouldn't have to! all is they would have had to do is check the Hot100.  I don't think they should have included the Cardigans what about "Loosing my favorite Game".

No, but i'm not a country music fan. But I meant even If VH1 was to lazy to check the country charts, but still checked the hot 100 they would find he had more crossover hits. as for the hit you named they just needed to check the hot 100 to see it #54 in 1974.

Here are some of the one's that haven't been mentioned that I wouldn't consider one-hit wonders:

98.  "Two Of Hearts" by Stacey Q (1986)

"We Connect", "Insecurity", "Shy Girl" , "Don't Make A Fool Of Yourself", "Give You All My Love"

91.  "Electric Avenue" by Eddie Grant (1983)

"Romancing The Stone", "I Don't Wanna Dance"

90.   "Don't Want To Fall In Love" by Jane Child (1990)

"Welcome To The Real World"

86.  "Bust A Move" by Young MC (1989)

"Principal's Office", "I Come Off", "That's The Way Love Goes"

65.  "In My House" by The Mary Jane Girls (1985)

They had a minor hit with "Wild And Crazy Love"

58.  "What Is Love?" by Haddaway (1993)

"Life (Everybody Needs Somebody To Love)"

53.   "Somebody's Watching Me" by Rockwell (1984)

"Obscene Phone Caller"

48.  "True" by Spandau Ballet (1983)

This has been covered on the board...

And half of the top 20...

Yeah.. They show 2 seconds of the video, then we listen to an unessecary comment from that guy with the high voice or another music star/rapper, then show 4 more seconds of the song, then more comments.. it gets annoying, and then they have commercial breaks every 4-5 songs..  >:(

Saddly, I think it's about demographics.
Most kids (emphasis on most, not all) don't care about anything before the 80's, possibly the 70's since current artist will "sample" from song from that decade.  Therefore, they don't waste their's and the advertiser's presious time with anything that won't bring in that 13-25year old (or what ever it is these days) demographic and money.

well, it's not on TV, just the Internet (and public access radio in Minnesota), but I highly recommend "Crap From the Past", http://www.crapfromthepast.com/  he doesn't just play the songs, he usually has interesting info about them, and also tends to find some really obscure stuff that even I don't know about...

I also have plans to write an 80s music trivia book.. I've been doing a lot of background work on it so far, but I may actually start to get it under way in a few weeks..
