Subject: What *80's* Songs Do You Think.....

Written By: CeramicsFanatic on 05/07/02 at 05:20 p.m.

...Should Not Have Made It To #1?

Since there has been some talk lately regarding chart positions, I thought this might make for some interesting discussions.  It is all about opinions, of course.  Below I have listed songs from the first half of the 80's that, IMO, should not have made it all the way to the top.

1. The Tide Is High - Blondie
2. Morning Train (Nine To Five) - Sheena Easton
3. Physical - Olivia Newton-John
4. Mickey - Toni Basil
5. Baby, Come To Me - Patti Austin & James Ingram
6. Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) - The Eurythmics
7. Tell Her About It - Billy Joel  (so many of his other songs were much better!)
8. The Reflex - Duran Duran (I know I'm gonna hear it for this one! :o)
9. Missing You - John Waite (I prefered his work with The Babys)
10. Out Of Touch - Hall & Oates
11. Can't Fight This Feeling - REO SPeedwagon (IMO, their worst song!)
12. Sussidio - Phil Collins
13. Oh Sheila - Ready For The World (this ranks among my all-time least favorite 80's songs!)
14. Part-Time Lover - Stevie Wonder (Love Stevie but this song is not one of his finest!)
15. We Built This City - Starship (this is one of those songs that grates on me the more I hear it)

Now I'm interested to hear your thoughts on this subject.  :)

I'm a little confused.  ???  Perhaps I should have stated "Pop Charts" because the only one on your list that fits that category is "Pop Musik" (#1 in 1979).

Anything from Van Hagar.
Anything by Rick Springfield.

It's hard to offer a good answer from my perspective.  Looking back, there's a lot of songs that may have seen like asinine choices to reach #1 on the charts, but they usually reflect a sign of the then-current pop music culture.  '9 to 5' making it to #1 may seem incredibly silly now, but in the early 80's, pop/country crossover acts did really well on the charts.

That said...:-)...can I just nomiate half the songs from '88 and '89??  Richard Marx, Milli Vanilli, New Squids, Martika, Michael Damian (already nominated, excellent choice there! ;-)) Chicago (granted, a *bad* Chicago song - 'Look Away'), Gloria Estefan (with MSM, it's all good - solo, it sucks), etc.  Just a lot of bad music at the top of the charts.  Even bands I like, like Bon Jovi and Poison, were represented in '89 by rock ballads.  Yecch.

Hi, oneonone!  Just to let you know, I have nothing against Hall & Oates.  They dominated the charts when I was in high school and I'll always have a special place for them.  (I even saw them in concert!)  I just didn't think "Out Of Touch" was one of their best.... :-/

I agree on a lot of what you've said, macdaddy.  And I especially agree about the songs from 1988 and 1989 being pretty bad.  Part of the reason why I didn't post songs from those years was because I knew that my list for the second half of the decade would be way too long!  We must be in the same age bracket!  ;)  LOL!

Ummm, I think BadAngel was referring to the George Michael song...lines like "...And teacher/there are things/that I don't want to learn..." (in my best George Michael impersonation, but my voice cracks... ;))

I'll look at it this way -- if "Can't Fight This Feeling" is REO's *worst* song, then they must be a D@MN good band!!!

I graduated high school in '89...easily the worst year, pop music-wise, in the 80's.  Remember my first semester at college, summer '89 - Richard Marx, Dino, Martika all over the radio.  Yecch.  Grad Nite '89, held at Disney World and open to all (paying ;-)) high school seniors in Florida, was headlined by New Kids on the Block.  Could this get much worse??

A few people have chimed in on Wham! & George Michael #1's...I had no problem with any of them except for 'Monkey'.  Just a bad song; sung by anyone else, that song gets nowhere near #1.  'Father Figure' is a great, great pop song.

I graduated high school in '84.  I thought it was a pretty good year for music.  Like you, I was not too impressed with the song line-up for 1989.  New Kids On The Block for your graduation party?  Uggghhhhhh!  Poor you!  :(

I also don't mind Wham!'s music too much.  (I can hear you groaning, Lester! ;D)  "Everything She Wants" was probably my favoirte by them.  I wasn't really into George Michael's solo stuff though...
