Subject: THE RUBIKS CUBE

Written By: Yusufscat on 05/11/02 at 11:28 a.m.

Okay, I spent the eighties raising kids and zoning out to this thing called MTV which used to be wonderful...used to be long ago..."I WANT MY MTV",  So I don't know much about the 80s.  I am a child of the hippie era.  But I do remember the rubiks cube.  I had one, spent hours trying to solve it and trying to solve it and more trying to solve it.  I finally did solve it.  I was not even looking, just turning the thing to occupy my hands.  I looked down and it was all solids on all sides.  Other people solved it as well.  The dismantled it and put it back together or changed the stickers.

Did any of you solve it?  Or did you end up in therapy for years from trying to do so?

Love,
A'isha

Never solved mine, don't think I'm going to try to soon, either. :P

I Ppractically went bald trying to solve it! NEVER DID, and it drove me NUTS, especially when I saw little kids solve it in like fifteen seconds!

Peace,Vivian

We have a collection of 2*2*2, 3*3*3, 4*4*4 and 5*5*5 Rubix cubes (the latter of which we find extremely difficult) and we once completed them all within 10 minutes, having previously been shuffled etc. Now they're gathering dust in a drawer, but think how much they will be worth in a decades time...

The only way that I could solve it was to take it all apart and put it back together!  ;D I also had this pyramid shaped color puzzle thatwas just like the cube except for the shape. I could solve it though. But do you think that I can remember the name of it? NO!  ;D

Rubik surgery was the only way I could solve it, too.  I remember the pyramid one, too.  I had one and could never solve it.  I don't remember the name of it, either.  Sorry

Okay, I was the only one to fool my friends by spray-painting the Rubik Cube the corresponding colors, wasn't I?

It would have been easier to just have taken it apart, Bobo. Not nearly as messy!!  ;) ;D

I solved it after a fair amount of time. I also remember getting very upset with one of the neighborhood kids who had borrowed one of mine because she had moved enough stickers to make one side solved. I also made the cube unsolvable...

That cube really got me so fustrated so much.I was like"How the hell are you supposed to solve this thing"?I could never solve the puzzle.too fustrated. -howard- :)

I solved it once with help from a book that told how to do it. ;)

I remember both the cube and the pyramid.  There was one boy in our elementary school who could solve both in less than five minutes each.  He was the smartest boy, always getting straigh "A"s and never needing to study.

There were three girls who were the "smartest" and I was one of them (which changed when we got to algebra.   :-/ Oh, well.).  I could not solver either one of them the "right" way.

But I was the first one in our group to figure out how to take the cube apart and put it back together again. ;D ;D ;D ;D

I'm digging out my Rubik's cube.  All this talk about Rubik's Cubes want me to give it another try.

But speaking of the pyramid, I could solve that without a book.  The pyramid was a lot easier to solve.

I think it's called Rubik's Pyramid. The pic is from Ebay, but even the guy selling it wasn't positive about the name. But I'm reasonably sure it is!

Now, did you hear that everyone? I am awesome!!  ;D

Well I guess that's the obvious answer, isn't it? Why didn't I think of that? DO NOT ANSWER THAT!! YC!!!   ;D

I too only solved mine using a step by step guide thingy I bought at school! I still had my original cube in its container and everything until a few years ago when I chucked it out.I was cursing when I saw how much they are worth now!!

The correct name may be Pyraminx.  Check out this link:

http://www.puzzlesolver.com/seqential/rubik/pyramid/index.shtml.

That one was way easier than Rubik's Cube.  A couple of years ago a co-worker brought in the cube and a book on how to solve it.  I was able to get all but the last step without referring to the book.

I think I still have Rubik's Missing Link somewhere - That one is a challenge.

DJ Midas is correct; it was indeed called "Pyraminx". I know because that name immediately popped into my head after goldie first asked what it was called. I didn't immediately post an answer, though, because I wasn't sure if I really did remember that piece of obscure '80s trivia after almost 20 years, or I just dreamed it, lol. Thanks for easing my mind, DJ Midas... :)

What did the Missing Link look like? Was it a linear toy that you had to move the blocks to match the colors? I remember something like that but I'm not sure if that was what it was. My memory isn't what it used to be. Getting old really bites!  ;D

No, I didn't solve the Rubik's Cube but when those darn stickers wouldn't stick to the cube anymore, I burned my fingers just trying to glue the stickers back on with my Dad's glue gun!  Ouch!!!  :-[

I was always in the ~25 second bracket - never quite the fastest cube solver in the school, but always up there competing.  I am more smug & pleased with myself for still being able to solve the thing: at a friend's last Christmas, he had the same cube as at school (it's >15 years old now!), and for the first time in about 15 years I had a go, and it took me 80 seconds... Just like falling off a bike, once you learn ;-)

fx: wipes smug grin off face and goes home

Apparently they're putting little Episode II Rubix cubes in Canadian Kellogg's Star Wars cereal. I'm so disappointed. :( I guess I'll have to see if I can convince M.W. to get me some...

Yeah, I solved it...deceptively.

When I was around 8 or 9, I took all of the stickers off of the cube and placed them where they needed to be.  I showed it to my dad and told him I FINALLY solved the cube.  He was truly amazed, or at least he acted like he was.  He probably knew what I did, but he played along with me just to be nice.

I have a small Rubik's cube keychain that I try to solve when I get bored.  I still haven't figured it out.  Props to the people who have!
