Subject: Any Donnie Iris fans out there?

Written By: Arcfire (Guest) on 05/15/02 at 04:57 p.m.

Hey all new to the forums here but I am a real Donnie Iris fan!
hehe King Kool lives!

If anyone is interested you can find his "un official" website here (tried to find the official one but I have not found it yet)
http://www.parallel-time.com/

Some of his air time songs were:
Ah Leah
Agnes
Love is like a rock
Do you compute?
 and my favorite:
I've been injured in the name of love..

Can anyone think of any others that got some air time?

Wow I had forgotten about "Do you compute" and "Injured in the game of love", that was an awsome video! and how he hit the highnotes there at the end of the song... AWESOME  :o

My favorite was a single that came out in the early 80s.  It was called "My Girl" (or was it "I'll Show You My Girl"?) and it had a vintage 50s sound to it...

Yes Todd, it was called My Girl and is a great tune, forgot about that one, thanks! ;D

Thanks Arc, the Parallel website brought back many memories. I used to live in Pittsburg (Donnie's a hometown hero there) and went to see several of his shows. He is a great performer and came out to see us in the crowd after the show was over! I see that he has released several albums since his bigger hits during the 80's but nothing has hit the top 40 (yet) ::)  I see several of his videos can be seen on the website as well.

BTW there is a link to the official website on parrallel, but its now defunct.

The only ones I know are "Love Is Like A Rock" (great!!) and "Ah, Leah" (LOVE IT!!).

I like what I know, so I'm sure his other stuff would be pretty good. :)

Big DI fan here, too, Arcfire. In fact, I've been a regular at Glenn's unofficial DI site (which you gave the link to) since he launched it in December of '97. I think it's one the best "unofficial" music sites out there. I've contributed lots of info to his site, and even swapped some DI items w/ him in the past. He's a cool guy, and updates his site fairly regularly. :) BTW, do you go by another name on his message board?

DI does have an official site as well, but unfortunately, it's been down a few times lately. They keep saying it'll be back, but no one is really sure what the problem has been. However, I can tell you this: There's no comparison between it and Glenn's site, so you're not missing much... :)

I was very pleased when Universal finally put out that Millennium Collection on him late last Summer - I bought it the day it came out! My personal faves include "Do You Compute?", "Ah! Leah!", and "She's So European" - and also "Samantha (What You Gonna Do?)" by Cellarful of Noise (which he sang lead vocals on). :) Never seen him live, though, but would very much like to - unfortunately, I don't live near Pittsburgh... :(

I liked all of Donnie Iris' songs that became hits. In fact, "Ah, Leah" was arguably his worst, even though it was his biggest hit. "Love is Like A Rock" and "Do You Compute?" are my favorites.

Wow.  Oh yeah.  Saw him four times in concert.  (and my SO's band opened for him once.)
'King Cool' was the first (gulp :-/) 8-track I ever bought!!

Sorry -- I didn't answer your question.  I believe "Merilee" had radio play.  I do remember "Love is Like a Rock"  was a video on MTV.

"That's The Way Love Oughta Be" is my personal favorite.
He has a really good "scream".

Well I see we have some others interested in King Kool as well! I like this forum! No real jerk remarks, just a bunch of ppl getting together to discuss what they love, 80s music!!! Keep this forum going!   :D

Suprisingly I have visited album review sites that have gone "back" to review "Back on the streets" since many ppl have told the reviewer how good the album was. The Daily Vault gave it a B- and AOR basement gave it an A-.. It seems that older almums are getting re-reviewed! ;D

I guess ppl are tired of todays music with all the "sampling" that is going on or I guess that the samples reminds listners of the older original songs. Here in Tampa Bay FL we have 2 classical rock stations with 3 station that play old top 40. Compared to the 2 stations that play the new stuff. Its funny to see that 5 years ago we only had one oldies station that played 50-70s stuff and the original stations had an Classic rock lunch hour or  some time period dedicated to older music...  :o

Ok to reply to you guys  :D

Bad Angel: Cool Avatar pic Bad!
His other stuff is real good, check out the website for samples of his music but dont blame me if you rush out to the nearest music store and cant find any, the same thing has happened to me! :P The Millennium Collection is out and has the better of his songs!

80smusicfreak:
Hey there fellow DI fan! Actually Parrallel I just discovered, so I am not yet a member of the forums there yet but I will be soon (I also have to sign up here too). Glenn's site is really packed with DI songs, and the vids totally suprised me! Some of those I have not seen since MTV was well...MTV! I stopped watching it during the late 80s when everyone had attitudes and then the gameshows took over. I used to like the old closet vid and underground series that they had. On closet video is where I first saw Ah! Leah!
I tend to agree with you on "official" band sites, they dont have much in lieu of music or videos and if they do its short sample-sometimes missing the chorus that made the song what it was. Yes Official websites generally dissapoint me.
I did pick up the Millennium Collection but was a bit dissapointed that they did not have "I've been injured in the name of love" on it. Samantha is a good song also which did not get much airplay-except for the AOR stations which would play the whole album. As do I, not live anywhere near Pittsburg  :-[

J.C:
Humm...I really like all of his stuff but I thought "Do you computer" was his entry into the new wave type genra. I admire his hard hitting chorded stuff like Ah! Leah! and Love is like a Rock. True "I've been injured in the name of love" does not have the hard chords that the previous 2 has but the Lyrics and his high pitched screams at the end of the song made it a fav for me. :-/

u-wish:
Sweet! So your band opened for him? What type of music did you play? Also how was he in person? I heard he really is a great person to be around! Your also correct "That's The Way Love Oughta Be" is another great song!

Dang I wish another music channel would start up and play older videos (VH-1 is too little and far between for my tastes)

That was pretty much the same time I started to lose interest in MTV, too. They began to lose their way, and at the same time (late '80s), the music itself was starting to go downhill, IMO... :-(

Glenn is pretty good w/ details, and is always looking to put anything & everything he finds on DI on his site somewhere. Rather than simply filling his site w/ concert pictures, etc., he keeps the collector in mind, too. His "discography" section is excellent, IMO, and he's always trying to track down newspaper/magazine articles (both past and present), and put them up on his site, too. And he's in touch w/ the actual band members, so every now and then, he gets the inside scoop... :-)

As do I, not live anywhere near Pittsburg  :-Millennium Collection because DI's 1985 No Muss...No Fuss album was on the HME label, through CBS (now Sony). His four previous albums were all on MCA (currently owned by Universal), and Universal is the distributor of the Millennium Collection series. In other words, MCA/Universal would've had to license that track for the compilation, and because it's a midline series, that wouldn't have been cost-effective, so it includes MCA cuts only. For that reason, I wasn't expecting it to be on there anyway. Pretty cool that they included the live version of "The Rapper", though, which had only previously been available commercially on a vinyl 45... :-)

Anyone heard of Iris' "The High & the Mighty"? It's a good song, but would easily qualify under "Repetitive Lyrics" because he repeats the title over and over again. :-/

Yep JC I remember that song A friend of mine used pick me up for school, and he loved that album, I used to get it confused with the Scorps "Crossfire" (if you missed the 20th cent fox drum roll part of the first few secs of the song).

Is it me or does Donnie Iris look like Screech (from saved by the bell fame) all grown up and in a rock and roll band in the Ah Leah vid??    :P

Check out the AH! Leah! vid here:
http://www.parallel-time.com/ahleah.mpg

Who is the chick in the video? An old Playboy playmate? She looks familiar  :o

Sorry I didn't clarify, Arcfire.  My Significant Other's band opened for Donnie in 1987.  He had met Donnie prior and said he was the kind of guy who'd own a lawn mowing service.  (Down to earth, I guess he meant).

80smusicfreak:  Alas, no.  It's loooong gone. I had only owned 3 8-tracks (the other two being The Pretenders and Steve Martin's 'Let's Get Small'), then those fancy-schmancy technologically advanced Cassette Tapes got popular. . . ;)

LOL I know what you mean 8 tracks were fun but how many times did you end up taking apart the cassette and pulling the tape out of the player?  :P

I would have liked to have met Donnie, like your S.O. stated he sounds like a real down to earth guy!  ;D
