Subject: Who is The best rock and roll band in the 80's

Written By: richbeatles10 on 05/20/02 at 04:16 p.m.

I like Mister Mister myself, "Broken Wings", and "Kyrie Kyrie" etc.  The  Eurythmics are top 10..

Please give me your opinion of either your favorite band of the 80's, or the greatest band or both.

Well, Duran Duran is my favorite band from the 80's, but I guess technically, they're not "rock and roll".

Hmmm, I'll go with Def Leppard. :)

It seems to me that some have different ideas as to what 'rock and roll' is.  Some of the bands mentioned here (ok, most of the bands mentioned) are what I consider "pop", not rock.   Anyone else with me?   ???

Woo, the 80's was a big place, so many bands...
If I had to choose 1 band as producing the best ROCK of that decade However, it would have to be:

IRON MAIDEN

These guys are the epitome of what rocked in the 80's, actually debuting in 1980 and just skyrocketing from there with killer albums.  I'll never forget being utterly mesmerized by the 'Number of the Beast' album.  Even the Di'Anno stuff kicked butt.  Truly legendary band that has the 80's to thank for their success.

I have a question.  What was around first:  The Scorpions use of the robot/mechanical scorpion, or Ratts use of the robot/mechanical rat?

At the time, the Police were probably my favorite.  When my older sister told me they broke up, I cried.

To all of you who responded...

I take everything in to effect...when you vote or just say what you feel about what group you believe is the best from the eighties.

Personalities are different... I know. But It's an overwhelming thing when you see so many poeple directed to a certain way.

I hope you agree.

I am writing a script about the eighties and I have my own opinions, but I know my opinion is not enough, nd that I need the input from a wide range of people who expierenced the eighties.

That's why I take the pole seriously...and make an assestment about their possibilities.

In advance thanks for all the input.....

It is tough Sam. When I looked at the question, it was the key word ROCK that I based my answer on. There are so many other bands from the 80s that I really liked especially from the new wave/new romantic movement that I wouldn't classify as rock. As far as The Promise by When in Rome, great song! I listen to it often.

If you are actually writing some kind of story or report about rock in the 80's, I think you'd have to actually have to break down rock into the many forms it had in the 80's and today.

Its really not fair to compare any of these against each other.

Pop
Pop-rock
Hard Rock
Glam Metal
Heavy Metal
Thrash.... etc etc etc .

"rock" bands that had an impact, I'd have to say

For hard rock...
Most of which started in the 70's but hit their peaks in the 80's
Led Zepplin
Def Leppard
Van Halen
Aerosmith
whitesnake
Guns n roses
Scorpions

For "Glam" Metal

Motley Crue
Ratt
Poison

For Heavy Metal

Iron Maiden (the best band in the world even today  ;D )
Ozzy
Black Sabbath
Judas Priest
Motorhead

For the heavier stuff

Metallica
Slayer
Venom

All these were bands were either the roots of their brand of rock or the most influential in their own categories IMO. And quite a few of them could cross over to other areas from time to time.
I didnt mention "mainstream" or pop because well there is really too many and the reality is I really didnt like anything less than hard rock, but I'd go with U2 if I had to pick one for a popularity contest.

JOURNEY.

I've been to a lot of concerts over the last 20 years, and Journey '86 (my junior year in h.s.) (Raised On Radio tour) is still, by far, my greatest concert experience.  Their sound was majestic, soulful and HUGE!!!

(In fact, if you go into Kansas City's Kemper Arena when no one's there, and listen very carefully, you'll find that the building itself is STILL vibrating - still attesting to the greatness of that concert!)

(btw, American Idol judge Randy Jackson played bass for Journey on that tour)...
