Wow. You don't come in subtly, do you bunnyluv? This takes cojones!

I was introduced to the concept slowly and sadly. All the sweet, attractive boys that I ever had crushes on never ever liked me. Ever. Oh sure, they'd give me tips about my eyeliner and such, but my heart broke repeatedly as all the boys I liked turned out to like each other. A couple of them even tried gallantly to be my boyfriend, but it just wouldn't work.

I hung out in "boys town" and it wasn't pretty. Too many of my friends grew up hating themselves for what they were and chose self-destructive lifestyles because of that.

Hairspray - I'm reminded of a Simpons episode in which Monty Burns asks Mr. Smithers what he's doing for the weekend (pardon me while I butcher the quote :-))...

MB - "So, Smithers, what are you doing this weekend?  Something gay, no doubt."

Mr. S. - "W-w-what???"

MB - "Oh, you know, light-hearted, fancy-free...'Mothers, lock up your daughters, Smither's is on the town!'"

My grandad was much like Mr. Burns in that respect...used antiquated vernacular, and even once described himself as gay when telling a relative how he was feeling that weekend ;-).  Or maybe he was just coming out....???

It wasn't such an issue for me growing up in the 80's.  I only knew people that were gay.  I swear that my Oral English teacher and my principal of my high school(Mr. Rogers) was gay.  After I left high school, Mr. Rogers said that he was gay(bi-sexual) over the intercom.  I heard this news from a friend of mine.  Weird, isn't it!  ;)

For the most part, I knew there were people who identified as gay, but I never knew of any personally until late in 1987.

It was used as an insult by teenage boys in my area whenever someone didn't conform.  "That's gay" or "you're gay" was the most I knew of it.

In 1987, at my first paying job in a discount department store, I had a friend who seemed to catch that insult much more often than the other boys.  At the time I couldn't figure out why.  He didn't look any different from any of the other guys, and I would have expected him to back then (I know better now). G*** always had a lot of girls around him, including me, but just as friends, he never dated any of us.  There was plenty of flirting going on, so I never could understand why the other guys didn't seem to like him.

Finally in 1987, G*** "came out" to those of us that he considered his best friends.  Only one fella quit hanging around him, and good riddance.  The rest of us had no problem with it, but I never realized what a big deal it was to G*** until years later.
