Subject: Bands known only for their hits

Written By: big_dude on 05/31/02 at 05:09 p.m.

Just got a message from Kryllin talking about how most people would not know any songs by "Asia" that aren't from their first album.  It got me to thinking that there were alot of great bands that had alot of great songs but were only recognized for a couple of them.  I'll get us started with these"

Mike and the Mechanics - Best known for "The Living Years" - Dang it!  That whole album (and the one before it) was AWESOME

Extreme - Best known for "More Than Words"-I HATE it when great metal bands are only known for their sappy ballads.

ANyone else?

I think the same could be said for Tesla and lovesong

I don't know about Tesla.  Their cover of Signs was pretty big.

Ahh that was just an overplayed cover tune  ;)

After hearing 'The Living Years', I guess I was hoping to not have to hear anything else off that album... ;D

You're right about Extreme in that 'More Than Words' wasn't indicative of that album...I mean, the rest of the songs also sucked, but they weren't ballads  :P

I'm one of those folks who listens almost exclusively to Greatest Hits CD's, so I don't have to worry about getting CD's with crappy songs on them :-).  But one CD I own that's good but is probably known only for its hits (The Metro, Sex) is Pleasure Victim by Berlin.

If I understand your post correctly, you mean '80s groups/artists that scored multiple hits back in the day, but pretty much all but one or two have since been forgotten - even though the rest were just as good, right?

If so, I nominate Rick Springfield and "Jessie's Girl" - although I still also hear "Don't Talk to Strangers" every once in a blue moon, that's the only song of his (great as it was) that I pretty much hear on the radio (or see the video for on VH-1) anymore...

Geez, whatever happened to "I've Done Everything for You", "What Kind of Fool Am I", "Affair of the Heart", "Human Touch", "Love Somebody", "State of the Heart", "Rock of Life", etc., etc.? :-(

I'm with you on that, macdaddy.  Most of my music collection is made up of greatest hits or compilations (so that I have the hits by one-hit-wonders).  ;)

The band Asia is a great example, big dude!  I have (and absolutely love) their Alpha album.  But the only song from that that ever got much airplay was "Don't Cry".  My personal favorite on that album was "The Smile Has Left Your Eyes" but it seems like that one was always forgotten by radio stations.  Also, I think that "Only Time Will Tell" is much better than "Heat Of The Moment"...but the charts say otherwise....... :-/

Beside "Blue Monday," "Bizarre Love Triangle," and "True Faith" what other songs by NewOrder can the regular radio listener name (that's IF they can get those three right)? Most by-standers can't even name the band even though they've heard the songs before...

Still, I get what people say when they write that they only get one greatest hits comp or a mix comp. That way they're not stuck with an album full of crappy fillers. I do that too. As a rule, if I like more than 2/3 of the greatest hits comp, I'll get the albums and check the rest of their work.

What about Depeche Mode (Just Can't Get Enough, People are People, Personal Jesus, Enjoy The Silence), The Smiths (How Soon Is Now?), Talk Talk (Life's What You Make It, Talk Talk).  All these groups are known by most for a few songs!!!

Men at work - Only known for 'Down under' in Britain. I didn't know until recently that they have had albums.
