Subject: 60s in the 80s

Written By: The Skuz on 07/18/02 at 03:16 p.m.

Okay, since Todd R brought up the subject of 50's style songs in the 1980's, and I felt that at least one of his choices was more '60's style than anything else, I'm going to bring up some '60's-style songs/bands in the 1980's. I'm also going to start a thread for '60's style songs/bands in the 1990's.

First:
Tracey Ullman: "They Don't Know."
The Smithereens: Pretty much anything they ever made.
The Cavedogs: Same Here.

I thought of more of them earlier, but I forgot what they were. So I'll leave the rest to you.

This may not count, but "when we were Fab" by george harrison sounds just a little sixties.

The fact that this is a cover tune has more to do with how 60's this sounds than anything else.

"In Your Room" by the Bangles has that 60's sound of sitars and such in the mix.

Adam Ant - Goody Two Shoes
(reminds me of late 50's/early 60's... like Buddy Holly, maybe)

Madonna - Cherish and Madonna - True Blue
(both sound like early 60's Doo Wop to me)

Alarm - 68 Guns
(sounds like it dropped in straight outta 1967)

Aztec Camera - Oblivious
(Beatles of 1964 almost could've done this one)

B-52's - Deadbeat Club
(reminds me of... Peggy Lee, maybe)

Buzzcocks - Ever Fallen in Love (late 70's? sorry)
(very Brit Invasion ca. 1966-68, to me)

Most anything by Dead Milkmen
(ignore the lyrics; it's in the tune and beat)

Depeche Mode - Sometimes Wish I Was Dead
(Herman and the Hermits much?)

That's it for now...

I posted a reply over at the 90's board, only 'cause I didn't see the question here, anyway  Strawberry Switchblade's "Since Yesterday", reminds me of a 60's girl group sound.

This is TV, not music, but the “Wonder Years” show was my favorite example of the popularity of the 60s in the 80s (just like “Happy Days” showed how popular the 50s were in the 70s).

In a case of 60s-meets-80s-meets-00s, the father from “Wonder Years” was in a recent episode of “Smallville,” where he played a high school football coach who could burn things just by touching them — putting a new twist to the expression “getting the team fired up before the game.”

The revival of “The Monkees” was another popular example of 60s culture in the 80s.
