By the 1980's, there was a backlash against the music business which, according to some people, had become quite corporate and conservative.  The phrase 'alternative music' was coined in the 80's to describe growing number of artists committed to pushing musical boundries and less concerned with selling millions of records.  The 80's alternative music scene was huge... my list barely scatches the surface... there was just too much good music in the 80's to absorb!

Joy Division
Jason and the Scorchers
X
Black Flag
Husker Du
Captain Beefheart and his magic band
Elvis Costello
Ramones
Teenage Head

I don't understand how you can class Duran Duran,Yazzo/Yaz, Eurythmics, Bananarama et al as alternative. Ok you can say 'they are now' (as someone mentioned) but, back in the day, you couldn't get more mainstream. Especially Duran Duran!

Alternative? Hmmm.

The Durutti Column
A Certain Ratio
Section 25
Dif Juz
And Also The Trees
Clan Of Xymox
Cabaret Voltaire
Einsturzende Neubauten
Death In June
Killing Joke
X-Mal Deutschland
The Normal
Suicide
The Comsat Angels
The Lords Of The New Church

... they all fit into their own musical categories, but they were definitely not mainstream, radio-friendly stuff, which, to me, would also make them fit into the alternative...
