Subject: Why were the '70s so hated in the '80s?

Written By: Kyle on 07/27/02 at 02:37 a.m.

The '70s were really hated in the '80s.  Why was there such an intense backlash and basically demonization of the 1970s during the '80s?

The '80s got old and corny in the '90s, but it was NEVER treated as badly in the '90s the way the '70s were in the '80s.  The '80s had it pretty good in the '90s, and even now in the '00s.  And now in the '00s, everything still looks like the '90s so the '90s seem to be getting a major free ride. (in terms of a backlash that is)

But if you look at lot of the '70s retro fashions that have been popular for the past 10 years or so, they are clothes that couldn't even have been given away in the '80s.

Why was this?

Well, speaking from a noughties perspective, I love the 80s. Maybe people have memories of the bad times from 1-19 years beforehand (using a retrospective view in the years 1980-89). I'm sure people remembered the bad stuff as much, if not more as they do the good stuff. Nowadays, I think the music left a lasting impression more than anything.

Hey! I'm new.
I really like eighties music and stuff, probably  being named after a 1985 marillion song that does it.
I don't understand the 70's 80's rivalry either but thought maybe it's that each decade feels it is better than the one before, take the whole millennium thing!
The music of the80's though... cool or what??!!!

I believe that the 80s was a close second to the 60s for great music. Different ideas, perceptions, tastes, blanket concepts. I guess the two can't be compared as they were based on the period of a whole decade, but still.

I know what you're saying.  It's funny how perceptions change over time.  The 70's seemed totally lame (hippyish, dated) in the 80's.   But now, the 70's retro styles... clothes, graphics, furniture... look really cool!  At the time, 80's style seems so cool, so right, so modern... but now, IMHO 80's style is corny, boring and downright ugly (remember all black furniture? uhg!).  But who knows, maybe by 2010 or so the 80's style will make a comeback and will look cool again.

But, as far as the music goes, in my mind the 80's will always rule! :-)

The 80's in terms of fashion and music was a direct backlash against the 70's music and fashion. I think the 90's will always seem cool in a way. The 90's aren't corny now. In 83 probably the 70's were probably considered old hat. In 93 the 80's were considered old hat. It seemed like though once 2000 came around the 80's just didn't seem corny anymore to me and the sad thing is I don't know why. The 90's for some strange reason hasn't had the backlash a few years into a decade like the 70's and 80's have had. Anybody know why that is?

I don't think the '70s were hated by the people who "made" the '80s so much as by those who were older from the '60s.  You have to remember that the '60s gen was starting to get its voice "heard" by actually ENTERING the media and all, as opposed to just being teeny-boppers who sort of drove the "culture" (but not really - that's really driven by the older gen too when they come of age).  '60s gen always has had a huge pass and make themselves out to be manna from heaven, and I think they started casting aspersions on the '70s in general as being far below them.  The "Me Gen" term came out very early.  Of course, I always thought that was the pot calling the kettle black.  But then since the '60s people were getting their word out, they basically told everyone else that the '70s were the "Me" Generation and that (somehow) the '70s culture was overall laughable, and it had a big influence.  So if you think there was '80s hatred of '70s, I don't think it's really so much from the younger as from the older, although the older planted seeds in the younger.  Am I babbling too much now?    ::)

;D The only thing bad about the seventies was the clothes. Everything else I loved.

I don't think the 70's culture is laughable. The 70's were laughable bacause of people getting tired of disco. Thats about it. Like somebody else said before isn't it funny that 70's culture seemed like old hat in the 80's than once the 90's came around the 70's were hip and in? When people think about the 80's they think one word: corny. To me the 70's, 80's, and 90's aren't laughable at all. This new decade of the 00's when its all over we may all just all laugh at it in terms of fashion and music.

Oh I didn't say it was (at least alot of it).  I think a certain other generation really does but somehow it's getting pinned on us '80s people.  Not that my gen hasn't thought '70s were funny or whatever; I'm sure there was a slightly younger "backlash" against disco and other things (like badly mixed barf-colors in my sister's pants?), but I think it was mainly a '60s-controlled thing.  And of course, while '60s gen surely coined the term "Me Gen", they also called our decade the "Decade of Greed" while we were living it.  I.e., no generation but the '60s can escape the epithet "selfish".  Let's not even get into their view of '50s.

And actually, maybe I'm too much a hermit but I've never heard anyone call the '80s "corny" yet until this MB.  Although I could see it.  My preferred term is "wild".

"Why were the '70s so hated in the '80s?"

I don't believe they were.

There was just that "Disco Sucks" movement, which was short lived but enough to help kill Disco as it was known.  :(  Disco was never completely obliterated, for it morphed into many styles of music, some very much alive today.  ;)

That's right. There was all of that. All of the experimentation in entertainment and music made the decade quite good.

As a matter of fact, I think the 1970's were great!

The 1980's are my favorite decade though! Quite excellent indeed.  ;)

And just look how much That's 70's Show kicked the crap out of that 80's Show ;)  IMO, I grew up in the 70's, therefore I liked the 70's better....nothing bad about the 80's though, except I aged a little more.

Well, that was due to bad writing, bad casting, and the fact that that particular show was more a mockary of the 80's than anything else, IMO.

I know. It's just like I said though....if you grew up in the 80's, you favored them..same for people (Like me) who grew up in the 70's...awesome decades. I liked BOTH but I'd give an edge to the 70's ;)

Since my highschool experience was in the '70's, (graduated in 1980), I guess that makes me more of a 70's child.  I prefer 70's styles (clothing, artwork and furniture), but I prefer 80's music.  I'd have to give the 80's an edge over 70's... being a young adult in the '80 was fantastic since it was such a party decade!

My 2 cents about this:
I went to junior high school from 1981-83 and with the kinds of fads, music, attitudes, etc. of the 12-16 set at the time - well - you dared not mention remembering "Romper Room" ever having been on the air at all to the other students in school.

Yet when I attended college in the early 80's and hung out with friends...we spoke more of great 70's bands and more, like Lynard Skynard, Led Zepplin, Bad Company, Foreigner, Styx and the list goes on....while nobody uttered a word about michael jackson. IMHO...it just depends on your age, and favorite genre of music.  I liked the 80's very much and by no means hate any decade, really...but oh how I Love the 70's :D
