Subject: Was it just us?

Written By: 80sBaby on 07/30/02 at 10:52 a.m.

Do you remember any major fads that were popular at your high school that you weren't sure were popular at any other high schools?  There were some things that were universal as far as 80's fads went......but what is one that you weren't so sure extended beyond the walls of your school?

I remember in my school, "Blow-Pops" became very popular in certain classes.  It wasn't at all unusual to see 80% of the class sucking on one of these bubble-gum filled lollipops.  Sometimes even the teacher would join in!

So............was it just us?  ;D

Okay, two "was it just us" things.  Snow balls, sort of a cross between a slushy and a snow cone.  They were really popular in the 80s, and still exist today, but I'm starting to suspect they were only a Maryland thing as I haven't seen them in any other state.  We even had Snow ball trucks that came around as frequently as the Good Humor trucks.  And 2 liter bottles of of soda.  Did anyone else ever hear them called Boss bottles?  I get laughed at all the time by my friends for that one, so I rarely say it anymore.

Lollipops were not a fad in my school.  Bubble-gum was, of course, and we would often sneak off of school grounds to purchase gum.

Wait, this is a HS observation?   ;)

Are you from MD?

I've lived here all my life except a brief period and so I've assumed snowballs are everywhere or in alot of places.  Apparently I'm wrong; AZ people have no clue (very strange!) and living in CT I never saw anything like it.

Actually I've always used snowball/snow cone interchangeably.  Technically I thought the only difference was that 1 is placed in those cone cups rather than a normal 1.  Maybe not?

And snowballs are vastly superior to any Slush Puppies or whatever they might be called.   ;D

In CT everyone was crazy about ice cream.  Yes, instead of snowball stands there'd be ice cream stands.  Which I would think would be very tough to maintain being that ice cream is much messier than plain ice and colored syrup.  But then again, it's not as hot all the time there so I guess ice cream - heavy and milky as it is - is acceptable rather than something thin and real cold.    :P

They were very popular when I was in high school, we used to sell them at games and fairs and stuff.

Snow cones are packed harder than snowballs, and I think they use more juice in snowballs.  And you can get toppings like vanilla cream, or marshmallow on snowballs (there's also a chocolate topping, but I always hated that).  I grew up in Maryland, but its been 4 years since I lived there.  Two years ago I remembered about snowballs and took my other (who had never had one) to this one stand that has been in business for over 40 years.  He loved them!

I vacation in Connecticut almost every summer, I love the ice-cream stands!  But they always look at me funny when I order "jimmies".  I guess they call them sprinkles up there!

Snow Balls have always been popular in southern Louisiana (New Orleans area) and I never thought of them as a local thing until I travelled to other states. In fact, the only other place I came across them was at a beach in North Carolina where they were advertised as "New Orleans Snow Balls".

It's funny how you think everybody has the same things as you, or else, think that nobody else has what you have. I never heard of a "Jack in the Box" fast food place until I went to California in the early 90s. But everybody else there talked about it like we talk about McDonald's here.

Back to the thread topic, did anybody else roll the bottoms of their jeans into a preppy tuck?

Our school district was big into Air Band competitions....were these popular anywhere else?  They got really huge for awhile and would sell out nights of shows featuring "the top air bands" LOL

I remember judging a couple of them....LOL....it was like watching a live video LOL!

YES.  I did all through high school (86-90) and first year of college.  I would say the majority of my high school did.  Vans' sneakers were popular also (not the checkerboard "Jeff Spiccoli" style but the canvas low-top laceups in solid colors).  I recently purchased a pair (hard to find the "classic" style on the east coast so I ordered directly from Vans) b/c other than sandals or barefeet they are the perfect summer footwear; very comfortable.

ABOUT SLUSHY TRUCKS:
In the mid 80's we had a slushy truck in our neighborhood that also sold "suicide" pop. This was the name they gave to pop where the guy would mix 2 or 3 brands of your choice together.

At my high school, the girls wore preppy tucked jeans with the kind of white, canvas shoes you're talking about (I don't know if they were called Vans), and the guys wore their preppy tucks with what we called "boats", a shoe that was kind of like a penny loafer.

Incidentally, I was more of a metal-head type in high school (ah, remember those bleached jeans shredded with a razor), so I never wore boats and didn't do a preppy tuck until after high school when I "cleaned up my act", at least fashion-wise.  :)

Did the tucked jeans thing (except in my school girls seemed to prefer wearing ankle socks and flats with the tucked jeans instead of canvas shoes).

Here's another one for you...........Did it become popular in your school for girls to wear men-styled denim jackets all day and write things all over them?  We used to completely cover our jackets with bands' names that we liked, funny or popular phrases, little drawings, etc.  Whole study halls were devoted to writing things on others' jackets.   ;D
