Subject: All-80s Weekend on VH-1 Classics

Written By: 80sTrivia on 09/20/02 at 05:34 a.m.

Just a quick note for those that have VH-1 Classics included in their cable subscriptions: The channel will be playing nothing but 80s videos all weekend long! They've done this once before and they usually play some forgotten or obscure videos, so get your VCRs ready! :)

Well, I have to say I've been kept entertained all morning while cleaning my house and watching the all-80s weekend! They've shown a few rare gems from what I've seen. Hope they show more videos that are rarely seen...

I live in Canada now, but i'm originally from NYC and i totally miss the cool music stations. It doesn't seem that MMM does this sort of thing. Oh well...there's always the Awesome 80's channel on Spinner.  :-/

I've seen MM do this once or twice, but very rarely. Maybe once a year.

I was checking it out this morning, I woke up at 4AM, unable to sleep.. they actually played "Da Da Da" by Trio and Romeo Void's "Never Say Never".. which I haven't seen on VH-1 classic before.. most everything I saw earlier I've seen before on there.. looks like they're just repeating their previous 80s blocks over and over again.. but I'm ok with it, since they have put some unusual stuff on there...

they even played some decent rap, LL Cool J, "Going Back to Cali" and Grandmaster Flash "The Message" which are songs I know I never saw on Mtv when they came out.. they always balance stuff out pretty well.. two rap songs, two new wave tunes, two hair metal songs.. Ratt and Slaughter followed by Grandmaster Flash and LL Cool J for instance.. doesn't seem like it should work.. but it kinda does.. guess I have a short attention span..

and they unfortunately played, the Tom Tom Club, "Genuis of Love".. a trite and useless song.. I love the Talking Heads, but the Tom Tom Club stuff was always really annoying.. (I still can't believe Adrian Belew had anything to do with it).. the nice thing about having "Stop Making Sense" on DVD, is I can hit the next track button on the remote to skip it.. >grin<

lol! While it was indeed a good weekend filled w/ nothing but '80s videos on VH-1 Classic, let's be realistic here: It was by no means a significant deviation from their regular programming, as '80s videos have always been the backbone of their schedule to begin w/! In fact, altogether, I'd say about 80% of their regular weekday programming is '80s videos. Think about it - "Pop Show", one of their usual one-hour themed programming blocks, like "We Are the Eighties", is also almost all '80s videos. Both "Allstar Jams" and "Rock Fest" throw in some '70s stuff, but are also primarily '80s. And of course, "'60s Generation" is just that - all '60s videos. So add it all up, and chances are, whenever you tune in to VH-1 Classic on any given day of the week, an '80s video will be on your screen... :-)

And as for "forgotten or obscure videos", again, I can't say they pulled out anything special just for this weekend, that they don't normally play during any given week. However, I certainly can't deny that they do play an awful lot of "forgotten" and "obscure" '80s videos; IMO, that's the beauty of the channel (in addition to no commercials, except for the occasional VH-1 promo spot!), and why I find myself watching it more than just about anything else nowadays... :-)

lol! I also caught "Never Say Never" early this a.m.! :-) I've had VH-1 Classic for about 3-4 months now, and I know that's at least the third time I've seen it. Missed "Da Da Da" this time, though - seen that one only once before...

Yep, I can say the same thing, as far as what I've seen this weekend. And as I said in my post to 80sTrivia above, like you, I don't mind seeing the "forgotten" or "unusual" videos more than once, either... :-)

Never saw "The Message" on MTV, either, since my family didn't yet have the channel back in '82. (But then again, I seriously doubt MTV played it back then anyway, as we all know they aired very few videos by black artists prior to Michael Jackson's breakthrough in '83.) I know I first saw the video for "The Message" on regular VH-1 in the early '90s, and was shocked to learn that there even was a video made for that song! (Same deal w/ "Rapper's Delight" by the Sugarhill Gang.) However, "Going Back to Cali" was in moderate to heavy rotation on MTV when it came out in '88; I remember seeing that one several times...

Agreed on the balance/mix, and that it works. And it's also kinda fun to pay attention and look for the possible themes of the videos that they group together. :-) (Refer to my old thread on VH-1 Classic here on the '80s board for what I mean by that...)

I disagree on "Genius of Love" - but to each his/her own. :-) I'd never seen that video prior to getting VH-1 Classic a few months ago, but have caught it about four times now. Talking Heads were always hit or miss w/ me - love "Psycho Killer", "Take Me to the River", "Life During Wartime", and "Once in a Lifetime". Even liked "Burning Down the House" the first 100 times I heard it! But never could stand "Road to Nowhere", "And She Was", "Wild Wild Life", etc. - guess I prefer their earlier stuff. I haven't heard much else by Tom Tom Club, but I'll admit that what little I have, didn't appeal to me, either... :-(

it was part of the Less Than Zero soundtrack, which explains why it probably got decent airplay.. I think by 88 I had largely stopped watching Mtv, with the possible exception of Remote Control.. I loved that show..

I just finished reading the biography of the band which came out recently.. decent read.. I finally made it a point to buy all the albums on CD, I only had a few on vinyl, and the Sand in the Vaseline compilation.. it's funny, but I loved some of the last tracks they did, which were considered throwaways.. the book's author was quite down on them..

I guess why I dislike the Tom Tom Club track is the lyrics are just so bad.. and after reading the biography and finding out that most of Adrian Belew's contributions had been marginalized is the final nail in the coffin for me.. I'd love to have heard some of the early work he did with them on that.. he does such cool stuff with his guitar, that tended to be overshadowed in the age of synth (due to the prevailing opinion of why do something with a guitar to get a strange noise, when you could fabricate it)..
