Subject: Gender Representation Songs in the 80s

Written By: Criz on 09/25/02 at 02:02 a.m.

Again - a little help please with this project. I need people to name as many songs as you can with a specific gender or sexual orientation theme! For example - many of The Smiths songs can be interpreted as songs about homosexuality, such as:

Pretty Girls Make Graves
Hand In Glove
Handsome Devil
What Difference Does It Make
This Charming Man

Thanks everyone again :)

There's also "Smalltown Boy" and "Why?" by Bronski Beat. :)

...And The Vapours  - Turning Japanese

I also need gender representations of women - like I have included 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun' as a useful lyrics for this project, as is Madonna's 'Express Yourself'.

Gender isn't necessarily just male and feamle, it's all the assumptions and sterotypes that go with the sexes. For example, 'Boys should 'court' girls, not the other way around' is a typical assumption - there must be some songs whcih  try to challange this notion, and many others.

That's what I need - thanks :)

Rockwell had a song on his "Somebody's Watching Me" album apparently about a bisexual woman, with lines like, "I had you here, but she had your heart". Bon Jovi had a song that said, "Roxie's on the table, got her girlfriend down below". Wasp had a song about a "voodoo queen" with a teenage girlfriend. Unfortunately, I can't remember the titles of these songs, but you can search Google.

The Bon Jovi song you're thinking about is called "Let It Rock" and isn't about lesbians. That line is the only line in the song that can even be remotely thought of as lesbian when in fact, it's about 2 strippers. The lines "I saw Roxy on the table, her girlfriend down below, they'll give it up to the King of Swing before it's time to go" in reality is about the boys watching 2 strippers at a club in Vancouver when they were recording Slippery When Wet....King of Swing refers to Richie Sambora.

BTW, I'm seeing Bon Jovi tonight at Key Arena in Seattle!!!

LET IT ROCK!!!!

I don't understand this thread. It seems to be going in several different directions.

"What's Your Name" and "Master & Servant" by Depeche Mode

"Oh L'Amour" by Erasure

Most Jimmy Sommerville era Bronski Beat songs

"You Think You're A Man" by Divine

"Sex Dwarf" by Soft Cell

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.
