Subject: Worst videos from Good 80's songs.

Written By: Dave on 09/25/02 at 05:08 p.m.

:) ;) ;D

I was inspired by the "best 80's song discussion."

1) Come on Eileen (Dexy's Midnite Runners) (I actually like this song but this was a pretty crappy video.  The lead singer looks retarded and homeless.  The 'girl' in the video looks cute though with one of those 80's bleached hairstyles.

2) I Don't Want to Fall in Love (Jane Child) -This video was pretty widely panned.  Again it used the homeless theme.  It basically just showed her walking around a ghetto area by herself or hanging around with freaks.

3) Rocket to my heart  (Paul Janz or any other Paul Janz video) (I could never like this song after I saw the video.  Janz was so ugly that he had actors star in the love interest in the video and we only got to see him in a studio singing with his band.  No matter how ugly you are, you still have to star in your own video!  That's what rock stardom is all
about.  Ugly guys with hot chicks!

That's all I can think of now bc most videos are generally ok or at least not terrible

Love Is A Battlefield- Pat Benatar

I love this song, but the viedeo is nearly unwatchable.  What WERE they thinking?!

Love the Asia songs, especially those of the early 80s. Don't care much for the videos though.

I don't really think much of David Bowies 'Ashes To Ashes' video - beacuse it used to scare me when I was little! However the song is fantastic.

I could put Olivia Newton John's, 'Physical' down - but the song is as bad as the video!

I remember 2 more now:

Video Killed the Radio Star, Bugles-I know this was the 1st video on MTV and deserves some slack but still it was pretty horrible.  I love the song but the video is unwatchable.  It's pretty cheesy and looks its age.

Easy Lover, Phil Collins and Phillip Bailey,
Great song but what is the point of the video?  It shows them making faces at the camera.  They should've had a storyline to the video showing some hot chick or something.  That's what the song was about!

Most videos where they have some type of storyline or show different settings qualify as ok which is why it's unforgiveable that you could have a lousy video for a good song.

"Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor.

The song is cool as hell, but the video is just plain retarded.  Typical early '80s cheese.

I'll have to add Hall & Oates' "Maneater."  How many times did they loop that 'turn & zoom' shot of Daryl?

I may be in the minority here, but I thought "Every Breath You Take" by The Police had a video undeserving of the song. The black-and-white photography added some credential to it, but to me it was down right boring. And "Wrapped Around Your Finger" wasn't an improvement either.
Also, "Love Me Tonight" (Billy Squier), "Love Is A Battlefield" (Pat Benetar), and any video with the band playing only.

The point was having fun and being happy.  Not all videos have to have a story or a point to them.  That does not make them stupid. (of course this song is just annoying)

I may have said this before on a previous thread but these songs are great, but the videos are awful. When I mean awful I mean they are boring to look at and in no way complement the song:

'Oh L'amour' - Erasure/Dollar
Both versions were great but both videos were just so awful!

'Waiting for a star to fall' - Boy meets Girl
This song is 80s power! The video was a pile of pants!

Patty Smyth and Scandal - "The Warrior" video.  The Cirque du Soleil costumes and makeup just killed that video.  At the time some folks thought it "breakthrough" and "creative".  I thought it was crap and could never listen to the song the same way again.

I am a HUGE Depeche Mode fan but what the heck was up with their video "Just Can't Get Enough" and "It's Called a Heart"???

I saw the Bobby McFerrin video to the song 'Don't worry, be happy'. The song was alright but the video was awful.

I understand that the whole idea of the video was to have fun but it just seemed stupid. Robin Williams was wearing african costume at one point and the thin guy with the glasses (Bill Irwin?) was wearing a tuxedo.

No offence obviously to the people who enjoyed the video, I didn't mind it myself, but it felt like I was watching embarrasing relatives in front of a camcorder .

There was a certain eerie quality about that video. It was filled with strange detail (dimly lit faces in cupboards, crows flying, a graveyard scene and a bizarre postman).

It was pretty good in what it set out to do.

As much as she may resemble Dana Plato from "Diff'rent Strokes", she's actually Debbie Gibson, 80's teen queen/idol.

Videos from 'Flock of seagulls' were generally awful - admittedly, I didn't like their songs much either.

'Hold me now' by Thompson Twins was a disastrous video from a great song. I believe the first director walked out on it just before shooting and so the next one just messed around with the buttons on his video editing system. He prefered 'the lines across the screen' button and used to it excess.

I don't know if this counts because it's not exactly the greatest song in the world, but the video is even worse. What I'm refering to is "The Look of Love"---ABC

That video is just plain nasty. It's like watching a Jim Henson production-for-adults nightmare.

i was about to post that one, are you telephatic?
personally I love that song (I dig ABC) but I *LOATHE/HATE* that video. Totally awful.
Otherwise, this thread has tons of videos that i enjoy and disagree about being bad, i guess because I'm very flexible and if there is some cool 80s fashion, i like the video, even if the song or the plot stinks... LOL
