Subject: Weird thought about "Family Ties"

Written By: Paul S. on 10/09/02 at 02:04 a.m.

The TV show Family Ties started in the year 1982.  The premise was about former flower children from the 1960's dealing with their conservative Reagan yuppie kids in the 1980's.

Well it's obviously 2002 now.

Hmm......

Let me also add that in both cases, I think the parents were way too young.  They'd only be in their mid-late 30s, and usually people in that age range don't have teenage children like Alex and Mallory.

Well usually.

I disagree.

I always considered the father to be in his early 40's and the mother to be in her mid to late 30's.

And I might add, both irritating in the extreme....

My mum is 19 years older than me so in the 80's when I was a teen of 17 - and she was a flower power chickie of the 60's - she was was 36.  Dad was 40.

Pretty much the same as the ages I thought the parents were in the show.

One thing I thought was funny was the episode where Elise tried to sing a folk music version of "Beat It".

I guess the obvious point I'm making here is if that show started in 1982, and Alex and Mallory looked to be about 15-17, while Jennifer was 9 or something, and their parents were Flower children of the '60's.....

And it's 2002 now.....

Could it be time for another version of that same premise?  Former '80's Children (in this case the people who graduated high school somewhere in the Eighties) dealing with their weirded out kids in the 2000's?

Though obviously you former '80's teens are in your 30's and I still say that being in your 30's and having teenage kids is not the usual scenario.  Having kids at 17, 18, 19, 20 or even 21 is EARLY.  The parents on "Family Ties" looked to be in their mid-late 30's.  Most people that have teenage children are in their 40's and 50's, not in their 30's.  But I guess if they were pot smoking hippies, then they would have had kids at 17 or 18 and then been the parents of teenagers while still in their 30's.  Which is YOUNG.  If the dad was 40 in '82, he may have been too old in the late '60's to be running around as a flower child.  Granted he would still have been in his 20s, but I suspect a guy his age would have hated the '60's.

Anyway, just some thoughts on that show and the passage of time.
