Subject: Who remember the "Paninari" ?

Written By: GenesiNJ on 10/23/02 at 08:20 a.m.

Remember the PANINARI?
It was an icon in the 80s.

The word "Paninaro" comes from Italian slang, meaning "Someone who likes sandwiches" (Panini). In Italy those places are called "Paninoteche", places where they sell all kinds of sandwiches.

The style,in order to be a REAL "Paninaro", required you to be dressed with fancy clothes, here is the list:

Socks: by Burlington
Underwear: by Versace
Pant: by Levis 501, Stone Island
Jacket: by Bomber, Henry Lloyd, Armani
Belt with buckle: by Uniform
Sweater: by Best Company
Shoes: by Timberland
Short hair on the side and front, longer on the back

There are many other brands which I cannot remember right now.
Pet Shop Boys even dedicated a song to the Paninari in their 1986 album called "Disco".

Here is a small interview where Pet Shop Boys talk about how they came up with their song:

--------------------------------------
It was named after an Italian youth cult and featuring a quote they both liked that Chris has said on the American TV show 'Entertainment Tonight': "I don't like country and western, I don't like rock music, I don't like rockabilly... I don't like much really, do I ? But what I do like, I love passionately..."
Chris "It was a very distinctive style of dress : incredibly baggy jeans, that almost looked like - you remember after flares came parallels ? They were straight all the way down which would stop at calf level and then they would wear Timberland boots. There might even have been a gap, but they were incredibly baggy jeans. Then they would always wear a fantastic pair of sunglasses, and almost a feather cut, long at the back, and some fantastic coat. They were very noticeable, which was very unusual in Europe, and they knew they looked fantastic."
Neil "The first half of 1986 we spent a lot of time in Italy on promotion. We read in i-D an article about Paninari, and it said, the PSB are writing a this song about it. I think we had probably said to Peter Martin that we were writing a this song called "Paninaro". Then we forgot about it, until we read about it. Chris had written a this song, this instrumental, and even done the words.
Chris "And then Neil said, oh, this can be Paninaro".
Neil "We had longed to do a Euro track with a long "Ooh-ooh-ooh" which they all had then."
