Subject: Best 80's Horror Movie?

Written By: 80sRocked on 10/25/02 at 03:46 p.m.

Now that Halloween is approaching, this topic seemed relivent.

What do you think the BEST 80's Horror Movie is?

Mine goes to Poltergeist.

There are many factors to consider: scariness, cheesyness, cornyness, suspense, humor, etc.

Thinking back to some of the 80s horror flicks, many contain all the above.  So, the question is:

What is THE BEST 80's Horror Movie?  Not the best of all-time, just of the 80's.

Definitely Poltergeist. That movie scared me when I was little, and it still has the ability to scare me now. :o

American Werewolf in London truly scared the crap out of me.

The movie that scared me the most when I was a kid was "The Changeling". It starred George C. Scott. I rented it a while back and it spooked me again.
If you can find it I suggest you give it a try.

Oh and another movie that scared me was "Madman". Check that out too.

When I was really young "Jaws", "Salem's Lot", "The Shining", "Race With the Devil" and "Ghost Story" scared the bejesus out of me.

Later, "A Nightmare on Elm Street", "Rosemary's Baby" and "Fright Night" did the trick.

Naturally I saw some of those on cable, not the original theater releases.

Oh thats a good one, the original one that is.  The sequels were nothing compared to Part 1.

What about the Hellraiser movies?  That Pinhead guy was wack.

The Child's Play movies (especially the original) were really fun too.

For scary, I'd go with the first Nightmare On Elm Street.

Another good (cheesy) one was Trick Or Treat.  Nobody seems to remember it.  I was not very scary, but it was known best for starring Ozzy Osbourne as an anti-rock'n'roll preacher, and Gene Simmons as a radio dj.  "Our hero" was also famous for playing a nerd on tv in the 80's, but his name escapes me at the moment....

All I know is that he played "Skippy" on "Family Ties". I remember that movie too! The element of scare was equal to that of "Hello Mary-Lou: Prom Night II".

As much as I liked Phantasm....I could never understand the full story of the movie.   ???  The silver ball through the skull is pretty scary and original.

One fun Horror movie I really enjoyed in the 80's was House.  But I think that the best horror movie was The Shining.  Good story and acting.

I have a quick Question.

I remember a movie where a bunch of kids slept in a Mauseleum(sp?) and where a girl who is brushing her teeth gets killed.

I can't for the life of me remember the name of this movie, can someone help?

I do believe that Freddy is going to be fighting Jason from Friday the 13th...should be interesting, my bet's on Jason because he just won't die...I mean he's been in camps, in space, in hell...

Then again, I was wrong about the Giants (BAH!) so it could be a tossup.

I mo def think that the best 80's horror film was Friday the 13th.  It had all the essentials of a horror movie of the 80's.  It was scary, cheesy, and funny too.  Plus it had that whole 80's sleepaway camp thing going for it.  Who agrees...anyone...anyone (ferris bueller) :P

All of the above were all very scary, however and I may be wrong but wasn't  "Serpent and the Rainbow" an eighties flick.  The whole being burried alive was pretty creepy.  there was rumor that it was based on actual events which were greatly embelished of course.

I think I remember this flick - wasnt it simply titled "Mausoleum"? the vid slick had a pic of 2 kids being dragged across the mausoleum floor (their fingers leaving bloodied grooves in the floor) by this huge glowing head with evil energy radiating from its eyes. Ring any bells?

For the record - my faves were:

Poltergeist - the freaky scenes when the tree swallows the kid, and that whole CLOWN DOLL thing! ooh! freaky!!!

Elm St IV - Dream Warriors - when Freddy opened up the veins of a kid in hospital and 'walked' him like a marionette puppet off the side of a building by his stringy veins and tendons etc...EW!!

Oh there are HEAPS i could mention!

Mausoleum was about a girl who gets possessed by something. The one part that sticks in my mind was that girl's breasts turned into little monsters. She hugged a guy and they ate his chest. One Dark Night sounds right for the movie your talking about. I used to be a horror movie nut when I was growing up. Anyone remember the "Tool Box Murders"?

Tool Box Murders scared me when I was little, but I saw it again a couple of years ago, and it was pretty lame.  Same for The Town That Dreaded Sundown, does anyone remember that?  If they remade The Town That Dreaded Sundown, they could do a wonderful job with it, because the idea of it was really good.

About Serpent And The Rainbow - it was indeed released during the 80s, in 87, to be precise, and, to be even more precise, in 1987... based on the book of the same name by Wade Davis.

I remember the Tool Box Murders.  Boy, I haven't seen that movie in ages.  I should rent it again.  I have seen so many horror movies in my time.   ;D  Rarely does one ever scare me.

I think one of the best I've ever seen was called 'Scarecrows' about some deserters who steal an army payroll and parachute into a corn field... I won't say anything more. The attention to detail in the film and the claustrophobic atmosphere is something I've seen rarely in B-grade horror but it makes this film a cut above.

I think the best 80's Horror films were the Halloween series (outside of the one without Michael). I just watched Haloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers last night and it was as good as I remember. There is one scene, where the two police officers are securing the house, and one is in the rocking chair with the shotgun gaurding the front door. The girl upstairs gets spooked and runs to him for help. What happens next, I will not describe, but it gave me goosebumps. Hell, the music from Halloween gives me goosebumps.

The newer ones like H2O are not as good.

That was the guy that played Skippy on Family Ties and the movie's soundtrack was awesome. It was a bunch of songs by Fastway. But my personal favorite 80s movie was probably Friday The 13th: The Final Chapter, even though there were six more after that one. It had Crispen Glover and Corey Feldman in it. Jason at his best.

I heard that too.  My vote has to go to Freddy though--I always liked him.  Even when he was killing folks he had a sense of humor about him! LOL!  ;D

I really didn't watch too many horror movies, but I always liked the Nightmare on Elm Street Series.
One I do remember that scared the crap out of me was "Salem's Lot".  That one scene, with the dude scraping on the hospital window--ugh, still gives me the creeps, just thinking about it...*shudder*

What can I say,  I'm a "lightweight" when it comes to horror movies.  :-[

Oh, yes! That is one of the scariest of all time. When that originally aired on TV, I remember I couldn't sleep because I heard the sound from the TV, so I got up to watch it for a little while. Bad move! When Mom made me go back to bed, I really couldn't get to sleep!

The scene where the little boy vampire visits his friend, who takes a little cross out of his model graveyard and drives the vampire away always stuck in my mind.

Although technically not an 80's movie, I watched the Exorcist in the early 80's and think its the best horror movie!  Some other good horror movies I watched (not sure if they were filmed in the 70's or 80's):

Exorcist II
The Omen
The Changeling
Poltergeist
It's Alive
Carrie
Children of the Corn
Mother's Day

Since The Exorcist was in the 70's I'd say the best 80's horror movie was Poltergeist 2.

I've seen Trick or Treat. I had forgotten all about it until I saw this post! :)

I'd like to cast my vote for "The Howling" and "The Howling 2." Both VERY 80's when you see them now...the hairstyles, fashions, etc. Not to mention the werewolves!

It is a toss-up between "Children of the Corn" and "Poltergist." I went to see "Poltergist" at the movies with a friend of mine. I don't know what scared me the most, the movie or my friend. The first time something happened on the screen, she lets out this blood curdling scream. I hit the ceiling. By the end of the movie, she had half the people in the movie theatre screaming. I didn't scream, I just basically deformed my boyfriend's hand by squeezing the ____ out of it. lol

A toss up between Poltergeist II and Nightmare on Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors

It's hard to find a GOOD horror movie that isn't to ridiculous with the gore (a la Geroge Romero 'Dead' series), but also isn't ridiculous (Critters, Night Of The Creeps, etc)

I still remember seeing stuff like The Changeling, Phsycomania, The Shining, The Howling etc at our Drive In - Those ones in particular scared the pants off me.

I am not one for horror slash movies and tend to avoid them - but I always totally loved American Werewolf In London.  I remember I had almost stopped having nightmares - then I moved to London and the very first time I went into the underground I had serious freaky flashbacks !! ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH :o

Anyone remember that movie Prophecy that came out in '81 I think. The one about the mutated bears that go on a rampage and start killing people up in the woods. That one scared me.
No one mentioned the Alien movies. I guess  technically they weren't horror. More sci-fi. But they were pretty scary.
John Carpenters The Thing was good for a scare too. :o

My faves were Halloween, Ghost Story, and American Werewolf In London.

Thanks for reminding me about the Prophecy. I've never seen the movie itself but I still remember the TV trailor that showed someone trying to get away by hopping around in their sleeping bag and then seeing them being thrown into a tree or large rock. Man that was freaky. I'm going to look for it so I can finally watch it.
