Subject: Was Saved by the Bell an '80's teen series?

Written By: Jeff on 10/27/02 at 05:31 p.m.

I ask that to you guys because Saved by the Bell is usually thought of as being the most famous "'Eighties teen sitcom" of all time.  But in reality, SBTB aired from the Fall of 1989 to the Spring of 1994.  And the show dealt with kids that graduated high school in 1993.  I mean '93, that wasn't exactly the Eighties, and neither was 1989.  The series just barely aired in the actual 1980's, and that was only 1989 at that.

So in reality it wasn't really an '80's series at all, though it is almost always thought of as being an Eighties show.  Ask most people to name an '80's teen sitcom, and they won't say The Facts of Life, or Square Pegs, they will say SBTB.

So I was wondering what many of you that actually graduated high school somewhere in the 1980's thought of this series?

As much as I used to like Saved by the Bell, I would hardly consider it "The Most Famous 80's Teen Sitcom of All-Time".  If you asked me to name an 80's sitcom, SBTB wouldn't even enter my mind.

No Saved By The Bell is considered 90's to me. By 89 everybody was out of the 80's stuff.

When I read this I thought for sure that it was an 80's thing but then I relised I was thinking on another series that had Howard Hesseman and Mike Tysons 1st wife in it.  What was that series?  Couldn't have been any worse than Saved by the Bell.

Quoting: I think that was Head of the Class.

thats correct.  Head of the Class was a great show, one of my favorites.  I liked it until Billy Connely replaced Hessemen, it just wasn't as good.

Howard Hesseman was great in WKRP and Head of the Class.  Didn't watch much of it cause I had gotten my drivers liscense in '82 and was hard to keep home, that was also back in the days when it wasn't as common to have more than one TV in the house.

It aired from 1989 to 1994?  And the character's graduated high school in 1993?  Hmm.  It's kinda both '80s and '90s.  But I think Saved by the Bell is ultimately a '90's show.  I doubt anyone who was a real Eighties teenager would ever cite Saved by the Bell as being part of their teen life.  How could they?  Saved by the Bell started in late 1989 and the '80s were already on it's death bed by '89.

I think the show is frequently labeled as an '80s series because it started in 1989 and any 1989 episode would obviously have the fashions of that year displayed in the series. Plus there is an undeniably strong late late '80ish influence in the series.  Even in the final years of that show in 1993 and 1994, they were still using that bright neon color intro to display the credits. Lot of early-mid '90's shows have that late '80s influence in it. But Saved by the Bell is not a series about real '80s teens.

hey i loved saved by the bell but i would never consider it the best 80's teen sitcom.  It was barely 80's if you think about it.  What about shows like Family Ties, Different Strokes, The Facts of Life, Webster, Silver Spoons, and Cosby show.  Now those were classic 80's sitcoms...not saved by the bell. :)

I graduated in '93 and always considered SBTB an early 90's show.  I started watching it right from the beginning, but I always consider it a 90's show.   Not the best show, but it was good.

I never watched Saved By the Bell, so I don't consider it to be an 80s teen show!  ;D

"Saved by the Bell" is not a genuine 80's teenage series.  For whatever reason, it's usually listed as an 80's sitcom, even though it only aired in 1989 for a couple of months.  And as others have pointed out, by 1989 the 80's were clearly on it's way to being out of style.

But "Saved by the Bell" is really an early 90's show.  Actually it's a show about kids from 1989 and the early-mid 1990's.

I Never considered it 80's as I enjoyed the show after the first couple seasons but really didn't get into the show until it was on repeat status on "The Stupidstation" WTBS in atlanta.  I also liked "Saved By The Bell College Years."
