Subject: Drive-Ins

Written By: BrianMannixGirl on 11/09/02 at 05:38 a.m.

As some of you know, I have mentioned that my family owned and ran drive-ins from 1974 to 1984.

I was doing a bit of a clean up last weekend and came across a bunch of program sheets from 1980 to 83 and thought you guys might like a laugh.

I have stuck them all on a webpage http://libranmonkey.homestead.com/DriveIn.html

We showed movies every weekend all year round - but I have only found about a quarter of our programs !!

Any way I hope you enjoy seeing what we showed.  Some have gone on to become classics - others are not even shown on TV at 3am anymore !!

It will take a while to open as they are all A4 size sheets - so open it in another page and leave it for a while !!!

Ha !

That's great BMG !

What wonderful memories (some not quite so wonderful)  ::)

"Meteor" - I don't remember the movie but I do remember the Pinball Machine with exactly the same writing....

"Endless Love" - 'the love every parent fears' - Love it - love the menacing inference

"Somebody Killed Her Husband" - I just love the little hand-drawn evil-looking dagger !  ;D :)

Thanks for that - great stuff  ;)

I think Sean Connery looks back at Meteor as one of his more forgettable movies :)

Its funny - I look at the programs and can remember the actual night we showed most of the movies - whose car I sat in (after interval cos I had to run the kiosk thru the first movie and during interval), and during which movie I got my first kiss - etc etc.

So many good memorys.

BMG, you were a lucky girl :D
That was the really the beinning ot the end of an era, I graduated HS in '84 and we used to go to drive -ins all the time.  The movies usually were 2nd rate and/or 2nd run, the sound was awful and the picture poor, but we had a great time.  I had an old chevy truck and we would back it in and lay in lounge chairs in back.  Fun days.

That was awesome, BM!!! If you had the actual promotional posters for some of these movies, they would be worth a lot of money! :) It's sad that drive-ins have gone the way of the dinosaur here in the US. I Spent many a summer evening with my family at the Stardust Drive-in Movie Theatre as a young boy...  :-[

Somehow, our Drive-In managed to survive after all these years.  Its still alive and kicking, every night during the summer.  Its a bit run-down, but its always a full-house on the weekends.  I have since moved away from that town, but I miss going to the Drive-In growing up.

And they've gone "high-tech" with the sound.  They replaced the old speakers and now broadcast the audio over an FM radio frequency so you can just listen to it off your car radio.  A friend I had in HS lived across the street from it and we could watch all the new movies fom his bedroom window.

Its Indiana's largest Drive-In and it has a web page:

Amazingly Cool!!!  :D Thanks for sharing BMG.  :)

Brings back lots of memories.

I also noticed this....

Isn't that almost the same movie poster used for the current movie out in theatres right now, "Ghost Ship"?

That image above is from the movie "Death Ship".

Does anyone know if Ghost Ship is a re-make of Death Ship?

If so....

It should be really cool because Death Ship, though a low budget horror film, was chilling and down-right nightmareish. It also managed to pull-off a well-conceived and gruesome ending.

Hiya RaceBannon.  Our sound was top notch !!  Half was powered up to the car radio's and the other half was the usual old speakers attached to the windows (and often still attached when one drove off !!!!).
Our support movie was generally an already run movie a couple of years old, but the feature film was always current or in the case of some weekends - a cult or classic - based on requests (usually by me - who cares about the customers !!!).

We also had a deck chair area that was undercover beside the projection box for walk-in's.  It held about 40 people.

80's Triv - I DO still have all the promo posters, in many sizes - thousands of them.  All in mint condition.  My collection dates back to about 73 or 74 !!  I have often thought of selling them but just can bare to part with them.  I also have all the advertising material, which was what I use to cut up to make the programs.

80's Rocked - Perth still has one drive-in left.  The Galaxy.  Its been owned by the same family for decades.  They all have normal full time jobs - so it doesnt matter if the drive-in doesnt run a profit every single weekend.  They do great deals like $10 a car, or on long weekends they will show trilogys for $15 a car.

Hairspray - oooh I remember Death Ship scarin the pants offa me !!!  I had heard there was a movie coming out called Ghost Ship - hadnt seen a poster yet - I wonder if it is indeed a remake ?????
