Subject: Obsolete, but you just don't care...

Written By: pell on 12/02/02 at 00:50 a.m.

What obsolete, out-of-date, or just plain old-fashioned technology, fashions, or practices do you still use?

I still:

- listen to LPs and cassette tapes (the 8-track is gone)
- make my coffee in a perculator that has to be from the 70s or 80s
- use the manual controls rather than the remote:
    - about 30% of the time on the television
    - about 75% of the time on the VCR
    - 100% of the time on the stereo
- drive with the windows down instead of using the air conditioner
- watch broadcast TV with an antenna, not cable
- drink tap water

I still:

- listen to LP's

- was born in 1980 and honestly believe I was born at the wrong time. I wish I was my age now (22), then!

- I have purchased over e-bay the Weird Science LP , Teen Wolf LP and The Wraith on tape.

- Have about every 80's video ever made, Valley Girl being my favourite.

- When I go to parties etc, I am banned from the juke box! heehheeh

- Whenever "Run to Paradise" by the Choir Boys comes on I get a little too excited!!!

I LOVE THE 80'S AND AM PROUD OF IT!!!

I still have LPs too, I just recently bought some turntables and they are a lot better for a party than a karokee machine! I've got about 150 records now and the collection is growing.  Everything from Pop Will Eat Itself to Huey Lewis to Lisa Lisa And The Cult Jam.  The list could go on and on...

From time to time, I still use cassettes and VHS tapes/VCRs.  Recordable DVD's are still way to expensive for my pocketbook, so I record my TV shows the old fashioned way---on the VCR.  Same with songs on the radio, I still use cassettes.  Plus I need cassettes for class room lectures.

Since we've expanded the topic to include things we have but don't use, I have:

- a Super 8mm (film) home movie camera that I will use as soon as I get a battery pack rigged up (it's European)

- our TRS-80 Model III computer (it actually still works pretty good)

- SoundDesign stereo components I got in the mid-80s (my Dad still uses the receiver and the speakers)

- an old (from the 60s or 70s) electric typewriter that I used as late as a few years ago, before we got another computer

Drinking tap water is considered 80's? You kind of lost me on that one. I always drink tap water. Memphis water is the best in the world. Literally. Our water comes from artesian wells. It actually says that on our chamber of commerce site...we have the best water in the world...straight from the tap. I wont drink tap water anywhere else though...it always tastes gross and smells bad.

Hmmmm...

- Live without an answering machine or cell phone.
- Use a wire whisk in preference to a blender or electric beater.
- Pop popcorn on the stovetop (why can't anyone make a decent microwave popcorn, anyway?)

When I was a kid we drank out of the tap.  Now, unless you have a home water filtrator, you buy water.  It may sound weird, Amanda, but there you have it.  Our tap water tastes terrible, and nobody drinks out of it if they can avoid it.

I am living in a total time warp now... I did have a short lived flirt with modern technology back in the early 90's when I ended up buying all new appliances and household stuff. After a couple of years I had developed a deep loathing of almost all new things as I now consider them flimsy and unreliable rusbish, none of it (despite being expencive) lived up to my reasonable expectations. It all broke early and was near impossible to use, I mean, who invented the digital tuning TV that needs a degree in electronics to tune in channel 3 when the old ones have a simple reliable dial you cannot go wrong with? We don't need half the technology they put in things these days to use them. I like the way most old things need common sense to use them, not a huge thick manual filled with cryptic poorly-translated from Japaneese nonsense.

So, I threw out all the already broken new stuff and went to the thrift store/car boot sale and bought all the stuff I wanted years back when I couldn't afford it, only for next to nothing! I'm so much more happy with my top leading VCR and dinosaour microwave oven, both are early 80's and work a 100 times better than the new ones ever did... At any rate they have outlived both by decades and have never once gone to the repair shop in the last five years, the others were there half the time I owned them.

I have only one thing from the 90's in my house, and that's the computer... I won't be without a modern computer as they are somewhat a nesessity for my lifestyle (mostly file sharing from work and college). Otherwise, it's all from the 70's/80's. Unfortunatly, my friends now call the house a mueseum...lol

I guess Im not very 80's. but I really didnt have much of a chance to be. I DID copy my older sister a little with the whole hair style thing when I was young....we'd tease our bangs horribly and then hairspray them hard to make them stay....now, my hair is all one length down the middle of my back (no bangs) and its straight...I dont crimp it anymore! lol...And I use a cell phone...I do have an answering machine, but to me thats weird because almost everyone I know has voicemail....matter of fact. I just bought my answering machine and my daughter had never seen one before...So, I came in one night, hit the play button and there was a message from my mom for my daughter and she said "Destiny, Destiny! Where are you?" just being silly...well Destiny runs over to the answering machine, picks it up and puts her mouth by the speaker and goes "im right here Nee-Nee" lol
