Subject: Does Anybody know what Toy this is....?

Written By: Carissa on 12/06/02 at 02:13 p.m.

Hi,

I am trying to figure out if anyone can identify or name this toy that I had when I was a kid in the 80's.

It was this box that had a crank on the side. You could get these rectangular cartridges that you would insert in the front. The cartridges contained scenes from Disney movies and such. The one I remember having the most clearly was a "Cinderella" one.

Anyway, when you inserted the cartridge and turned the crank, you could watch a (soundless I believe) scene from whatever was contained on said cartridge. The one I had was Cinderella and Prince Charming dancing. The slower/faster you turned the crank, the slower/faster the animation would occur.

Does anybody know what the HECK this is??? My mother got rid of it over 13 years ago. Also, it's not a ViewFinder, since ViewFinders were little round slide-shows basically.

If anyone knows please respond, or drop me an e-mail. Thanks!

I had that and gave it to my nieces a few years ago.  It was a Fischer-Price product. I don't remember it's name, but it was a yellow thing that you inserted the cartridge into.
The "movies" I had were a couple Rescuers, a Pink Panther, a Snoopy and the Red Baron, and a Mickey/Pluto/Donald Duck scene.  The movies were very short, maybe 10 seconds long, tops.  You might want to try e-bay.  Search for Fischer-Price (after checking the spelling, of course).

Oh, how annoying that I don't know what they were called!!  I had the box that played them and a little "video camera" kind of thing too!  I remember one I had was Mickey, Donald, and Goofy--they were in a haunted house and there were these ghosts flying all around messing with them...I liked it because you could turn the crank backwards and play the whole cartoon that way.. ;D

I liked the "Sesame Street" film where you could see the "5 chocolate cakes" guy "fall up" with the cakes jumping on the tray.

Oh yeah, I remember those. They were made by Fisher-Price. I can remember playing with them back in the late 70's. Check garage sales.

At first I thought you were talking about the Viewmaster, but I reread the original post. I never had what you're talking about. It sounds like a modern version of one of the original movie machines (Magic Box?, cinemascope?).

Steve: Good to see you back. It seems like it's been a while. :)

I had this one, too.  Like Warlock I didn't recognize the toy until you posted about having this cartoon.  I wish I could remember the name of the toy.  I think I lost it when I moved from Ohio to California....bummer. :-/

That's IT!!!  Man, I didn't know it was from 1973, though.  Well, if anyone ever asks you what you did before VCRs...

I wonder if there's a list anywhere of all the movies made for the viewer?

Thank you for all of your help! I had no idea the item was from the '70s, thanks. :)

I went and did a search for it on Ebay and mine looked a tiny bit different than the one you posted Danaann888. This link says this one's from 1977 (maybe a revised version)

I guess there's a difference between "Movie Viewer" and "Movie Viewer Theater".
