Subject: Back to the Future Screw Up

Written By: Child of the 80s on 12/18/02 at 09:25 p.m.

Us 80s freaks are familiar with this classic but the messed it up if you really think about it.When Marty gets back from the past how come his parents didnt recognize him.He was the one who got them together right?I wouldnt forget the guy who got me together with the girl of my dreams. They could of least said "Hey You Look Like That Calvin Klein GUY"Another thing when he got back his brother and sister were all successful. If thy were so successful why the hell were they  still living at home eating breakfast?

How do you think they got so successful?  By not spending any money on food, rent, you know, the basic necessities...

Besides, the movie was made by men, most of them don't  think about stuff like that ;) ;D

Keep in mind, 30 years did pass between them meeting Marty as teens and then again as his parents.

Here is why:
his name the first time was Marty, but after he gets back he was named after the Marty who got them together (remember at the end of the dance when she says "Marty, what a nice name").  When Marty gets back to the future, he does not sudenly meet his parents for the first time, instead he is the same kid they have raised for the past 18 years, and they notice no difference from the day before.  also it has been 30 years since they saw the marty who got them together, and they would be expecting a middle aged man not a teenage boy.

Sorry, but I remember the names and faces of every boy I ever had a crush on.  The mom would have some inkling that he looked familiar!

To her he looks like her son, the same one she has seen for 18 years.

BTW: most people cant remeber all the details of a quarter, let alone the details of someone they haven't seen for thirty years.

Very true.  And he was 17 at the time, although I guess that would've been his 18th year ;)

But, how often do you study the details of a quarter?  I can tell you all about my first "boyfriend" in Kindergarten, which was 26 years ago, down to the first tooth he lost(lower left bicuspid).

I agree, he is her son and she has seen him grow up, but she SHOULD be able to see a resemblance!

By "quarter" he meant a period of 25 years.  And you have an exceptionally good memory.  I don't remember who any of my friends in kindergarten looked like at all.

You use a quarter everyday, she only saw him for a week in november 30 years earlier.  I am only twenty five, but I can not remember the faces of any of the girls I went to high school with in detail.

Well, so much for that :P ::)

Let's look at it this way...She fell for Marty (which would've been incest), but then she fell harder for George, and while Marty was just animal lust, George was the true thing and that stuck in her memory forever ;)

Yes yes, women are superior and men are scum ::)

Then you gotta ask yourself, how is it possible that George McFly looks like George, but Marty and Shamus look like Marty ;)  And why Shamus is married to Lea Thompson :D

Subject: Re: Back to the Future Screw Up

Written By: Child of the 80s on 12/18/02 at 10:21 p.m.

Shamus is married to Lea Thompson because Shamus originally asked Molly Ringwald  to marry him but she wanted a pre-nup.

That's new  ::)  But that seems more glaring than the Marty thing...of course, Marty could've easily been passed off as George's fourth cousin or something.

And like they said up there somewhere, just because they didn't say on-screen that Marty looked like Calvin Klein from the 50s doesn't mean they didn't do it off-screen.  Use your imagination ;)

Also, you can look from this point of view: Lea remarked that Marty was a nice name at the dance...well if she had kept that memory burning then..why wasn't her first son named Marty? Because it wasn't that big in her memory. Biff tried to attack her and George saved her from that...that is what would stand out in my memory, not a boy I had a slight crush on for a few days before I met the love of my life. Although Marty is the indirect reason for them to get together, it was the Biff situation that would stand out in her mind. She wasn't aware of the plot like we are, the audience always sees more than the movie character. And I have to say that I had many crushes as a young girl (so long ago now lol) I think I remember the idea of them, but I don't know that I could pick them all out of a crowd now. :-[

Of course, all the hopping Marty did in and out of the space-time continuum probably screwed up some neutrinos or whatever along the way ;)

Actually, it IS listed :o

Do you honestly think that Marty's parents wouldn't think it was the slightest bit odd that their son happens to look and talk and dress EXACTLY like the boy that hooked them up in high school?

It's towards the middle.

Oh, this blew my mind...

Who wrote the song "Johnny B Goode"? It can't have been Chuck Berry, because his cousin Marvin held the telephone up while Marty was playing the song on stage, and Chuck heard it first then. It can't have been Marty either, because he heard the Chuck Berry version of the song while he was growing up. So we have a paradox - nobody ever wrote the song. Whoops - end of the universe time...

Chuck Berry would have written Johnny B. Goode anyway (witness earlier unchanged 1985).  So, therefore, him hearing Marty would only inspire him to write something he already had the basic idea for.  So Chuck Berry is still the writer of the song.  And besides, didn't he start hearing the song when it was already more than halfway over?

Just thought I'd jump in here- I looked at that list of mistakes, some I noticed, some not.  The real glaring mistake to me was when Marty first goes back to 1955 and crashes into the farm house.  It was 1 in the morning when he crashes the car, but when he leaves the farm and gets out on the road, its broad daylight.
Can you imagine going out some night, the bars close at 1(they do where I live) and you have to work the next morning.  First though, you stop for a quick late night fast food run(preferably a Carne Asada burrito) and you get home its light out and you have to go to school or work?  Weird...

personally.. I think it's odd Marty's FATHER doesn't notice.. I mean think about it.. the father happens to have a son that grows up to look a lot like a boyfriend his wife had before meeting him..

it's not really a mistake though.. why would they mention it to the son? I'd think they'd mention it to each other (the last person you would tell this to would be the kid in question)

Okay, not to get back on the men/women thing, but either of them SHOULD have remembered him due to the simple fact that he was so different from them.  I just think they should have made some kind of reference to the 1950's Marty.

Hey guys I think it was just a jumbled mess when by accident marty (calvin) got hit by lorraine's dad's car.  What Marty had to do was to get his mom not to fall in love with him but get her to fall in love with George.  I think that by doing that it just corrected the mistake of marty getting hit by the car instead of george.  Marty (calvin) was never thought about again (as if it never happened)  do you guys understand?  This is the way I thought about it.

My opinion on the whole thing is it's just a movie.  They didn't recognize him because it wasn't in the script.
