Subject: 1980:

Written By: Chrisrj on 12/27/02 at 02:47 a.m.

This thread is about stuff that happened in the year 1980.

I was born in January of that year, so I thought it'd be cool to learn a little more about it.  Plus, as TV Guide put it, it was "the year after disco ended, and before MTV began."  So maybe this thread could give 1980 more love, instead of being viewed mostly as an "outcast" year... at least by my view..

I recently bought Entertainment weekly's 1980 CD.  I always thought "what i like about you" was 1981... nheh..

Musically there was some good music that got to # 1 :

Pretenders - Brass In PocketBlondie - Call MeDon McLean - CryingDavid Bowie - Ashes To AshesPolice - Don't Stand So Close To MeJohn Lennon - (Just Like) Starting Over
and some not so good got there as well :

Dexy's Midnight Runners - GenoKelly Marie - Feels Like I'm In Love

1980...I was 8 years old.  Lived in Glendale AZ.  I learned how to shoot pool and was pretty good for a kid.  I played soccer in the AYSO league...our team sucked.   My mom got a new car, a Datsun 510 Station Wagon, which became the first car I drove - 4 speed manual transmission.

I think the ultimate highlight of 1980 was the USA's victory over the USSR in hockey at the Lake Placid Olympics.  What a tremendous win by the underdogs with huge political ramifications

Remember Al Michaels:   "DO YOU BELIEVE IN MIRACLES!!!!!!!!!! YESSSSSSSS!!!!!"

1980 I was a freshman in High School.  Wide leg jeans were heading out and 501s were back in style.  We had a big "preppy" croud and Izod shirts and top-sider loafers were popular.  Lots of upturned collars on those Izod's.  Reagan won the presidency, cold war was soon to peak.  Carter lost it partly becasue of the Iran hostage rescue debacle that happened that year.
New Wave music was getting big, and so was hair.  May 18th, 1980 Mt. St. Helens blew and we still have souveniers here made from the ash.
If I knew where my yearbook was I could probably come up with a bunch more stuff.

Good memory, Race.  I was 13 in 1980.  I didn't remember any of it until you brought it up.  I guess I was too involved with whatever it is 13 year old girls do.  I think it mostly involved alot of gossiping about who liked who today and who you were best friends with today.

Thanks Julie, truthfully at 1st I drew a blank and couldn't think of anything.  That's when I came up with the fashion thing and other things kept popping up.  I liked the early 80s myself, didn't care for the latter part of the decade.

I was nine and I don't remember much. I do remember that hockey game though cause my mom was/is a hippie. She went on about how we were using the event as a 'we are better than you' statement. I felt sorry for the USSR. They were not the evil empire...they were just living their lives like we were. Governments suck.

I was 16 years old in 1980. A few things come to mind: President Reagan took office and began to miraculously bring our millitary, as well as our economy, out of the ruins of the Carter administration. He took on the "Evil empire" which led to their collaps at the close of the decade (we then suddenly became the worlds lone Superpower with Russia as our allie: Who would have thought?).

In 1980 I was burning out on Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Nazareth and the likes, and was yearning for something fresh and new. I believe it was then that I discovered Judas Priest, Scorpions, Riot and Saxon. Each year afterward it seemed that Rock music just kept getting better and better. The 80s was an awesome decade for music (Metal as well as New Wave); it was a great time to be young.

1980 also seemed to be a turning point in our culture when more young people (teens and 20s) were becoming more interested in  their future careers than ditching school and smoking pot.

Unfortunately, shaving (you know what I mean) didn't become a full blown trend until the 90s came along which made fourplay a bit less exciting in the 80s than it is now. Now why did that have to pop in my head? Sorry, heh!

I was born in 1979 so I was 1 years old back then. I think when I was 4 was is the farthest back I can remember. I remember hearing Phil Collins's "Against All Odds" and Lionel Richie's "Hello" and "Say You Say Me" back then. I went to pre-school back then. I think I watched "Webster" and "Rog and Re-Run" back then.

I was in the 9th grade.  Roller skating, as it was called then, was the big thing.  You know those big old heavy boots with the 4 wheels attached to them!  ;D

As Fuss said, there was a lot of good music that year.  One of my favorite CD's is Time-Life's Sounds Of The Eighties: 1980.  Here's the track listing in case anyone is interested...

1. Crazy Little Thing Called Love - Queen
2. What I Like About You - The Romantics
3. Brass In Pocket - The Pretenders
4. Let's Get Serious - Jermaine Jackson
5. Sara - Fleetwood Mac
6. Call Me - Blondie
7. Funkytown - Lipps, Inc. (One of the last disco songs)
8. Too Hot - Kool & The Gang
9. Little Jeannie - Elton John
10. Hit Me With Your Best Shot - Pat Benatar
11. Tired Of Toein' The Line - Rocky Burnette
12. Cars - Gary Numan (A very cool song!)
13. The Wanderer - Donna Summer
14. Cruisin' - Smokey Robinson (An excellent song!)
15. Fame - Irene Cara
16. Magic - Olivia Newton-John (From the movie Xanadu)
17. He's So Shy - The Pointer Sisters
18. Sailing - Christopher Cross

:D :) ;)

1980. Gee. (he says while doing that popping-his-fingers routine, getting ready to let loose...)

"Pink Lady & Jeff"

The year Thom McKee became the highest money-winner of "Tic Tac Dough"

Michael Hayes of The Freebirds and his "1979 Lincoln Continental"

The year all 3 of us boys got nothing but electronic toys from our parents for Christmas.

Casio keyboards, and the "drum" noise (Bonk, TIC, bonkbonkTIC). Musical calculators that gave different "ding" noises for each number (you can imagine the strange music when you got an 8-digit answer)

"Richie Rich" and "Happy Days" cartoons. The year they got rid of that neat Wondertwin noise and replaced it with a crash noise. "Dear Alex & Annie"

The year "Hawaii 5-0" was cancelled

QUBE questions (How many people were as dumb as I was and thought you could answer the questions by touching the TV screen?)

The year "Pac-Man" started (At first, I thought the Pac-Men were the "bags", which I found out were supposed to be ghosts - what did I know?)

The original "3-2-1 Contact" characters - Trini, Marc, & Lisa, and "The Bloodhound Gang"

The departure of Flo from "Alice", and her subsequent short-lived series

The first "music video" I ever saw. Our cable company had a free preview of Showtime, and in between movies, they had a "Showtime Short". There was a film of a woman standing outside a train station singing a song about "My baby takes the morning train, he works from 9 to 5 and then..." (Things sure have changed, for better or more likely worse, since then)

The death of Col. Sanders (I think he did a PSA for the March of Dimes that year before his death.)

Rubik's Cube started giving me headaches

The year Dolly Parton started getting promoted for, uh, something else instead of being a country singer

I thought the song "Babe" by Styx was called "Babe I Love You" and was by Air Supply. (There has to be somebody else out there who thought that)

And of course, when this "Celebration" song got popular late in the year, we knew what people would be playing ad nauseum during New Year's parties when  - gulp - 1981 (don't get me started) began.

I hope I have adequately described some of the things that happened in 1980. Thank you.

:-*   I was 9 in 1980, and I remember having lots of fun that year. For one thing, I got the teacher I wanted really bad for 4th grade. It was the year of the "Who Shot J.R.?" saga on "Dallas," which was absolutely HUGE! Reagan won the presidency (boo...), "The Blues Brothers" was a box-office success, John Lennon was killed, and Steve McQueen died of cancer. All in all, 1980 was one of my favorite years.

I liked the fact we still had some "Disco" spill-over into the 80's decade for a couple more years!  :D

It has to be admitted that "Disco" was THE best music to RollerSkate to. Rollerskating happened to be my favorite passtime, aside from the arcade. ;) :)

"Battlestar: Galactica" went through a radical change and became "Galactica 1980". Apollo was dead, Boxey was all grown up and going by a different name, Starbuck was stranded on a planet with a friendly Cylon, cousin Oliver...whoops, I meant Dr. Zee, was advising Commander Adama...oh, yeah, and they found Earth.

When I was a kid, I used to think this meant that "he" took another woman home with him, and that he found his wife "waiting for him."

I'd forgotten about that. Boy, did I have the wrong idea. That's an odd mistake for a kid to make, but then I got a lot of songs confused when I was a kid. :)
