Subject: That 80's Show

Written By: NitroOFR on 01/24/03 at 09:02 a.m.

Remember That 80's Show last year? That was an interesting mess! It got canceled after only 13 episodes and deservedly so, bad acting and bad writing. It seems like FOX is putting out more shows each year that are slapped together, go nowhere, and don't last long. The new show Girls Club was canceled after 2 episodes, wow.

I tried to watch that show a couple of times.  Thought I would really like it since I like That 70s show and I grew up in the 80s but most of the stuff they portrayed was just a little too much.  It was a little over the top on most and not very good.  Seems they were able to get the 70s down pretty well but must have slept through the 80s. :)

you are right.  I think thats why most people shyed away after seeing it once or twice.

The show would overdue everything that was new and hot in the 80s to the point where it became excessive.  They made it seem like everyone in the 80s carried around those big primitive cell phones and dressed like Don Johnson.  I know I didn't.

The show's concept had potential, it just didn't have good actors and writing.  Terrible combination for a sitcom.  Ugh, it was really bad. ::)

In a couple more years That 70's Show will be That 80's Show. Isnt 1978 on the show now?

The show started in "1976", they've managed to only progress through 2 years since being on the air.  I think its been on for 5-6 years now(maybe I'm wrong), so at their current rate, they still have a while before reaching "1980".

EXACTLY!

That 70's Show worked because there is so little empahsis on the 70s.  It's a show that just happens to take place in the 70s, but they don't pretend like every fad and fashion took place in the same week.  That 80's Show was fake, and everyone knew it.  It was even faker then the later years of Happy Days when greaser Fonzie walked around in bell bottoms and the women all had early 80s feathered hair.

One day, it would be cool if a nostaligc 80s show could be done, and be done as good as The Wonder Years was.  TWY made you feel like you really were in the 60s, simply because there was such a high attention to detail.  They showed how it really was, rather then pretending like everyone was a Beatles fan and constantly talking about Vietnam.

I caught it once and it was so stark and ugly.  The guy who played the father roll usually plays scary character actor spots.  They tried to hard.  70's show trancends the era, meanin that the situations and much of the dialogue could be set during any modern time frame.  That, and it's got some good people on it.

I only really liked it because it used a Smiths song ("What Difference Does It Make?") in one of the episodes. There was another one where a couple of the characters were going to a Smiths concert.

I've never seen a TV show mention The Smiths (non-music-related TV show that is.) :)

It was a fun show despite the inaccurate portrayal of the '80's.  It also had quirky characters that are like typical stereotypes of how people were in the '80's. (no offense)

One of my favorite episodes is when a perky show tunes fan visted Maragret's store (Permanent Records) and asked HER for a refund. Margaret said "No" and the perky customer decides to stay in the store for a few hours.   At the end, the customer talked to Margaret about her temper that caused Margeret cracked up and the customer told her that she didn't want a refund.  Featured a very special guest star.

The customer was played by the very lovely & multi_talented Deborah Gibson. She looked great and over acted a bit. Well, that what people will expect from a Stage Diva. (in a good way)

In the same episode, Sophia had a rival, played by Morgan Fairchild. The best part was when they were cat fighting.

Not to mention the scene where Deborah Gibson's character was at the listening station (Obiviously sounded beautiful.) and Maragret came and took the record out the record player & argued with her. (pure comedy) And the scene with Katie's boyfriend played a trick to Roger with a football.  Fortunately, I recorded this episode on tape. :D

I also liked the pilot, when Roger got a date, the one when Corey went to a club where Tuesday hangs out, where Sophia got depressed, and the Valentines episode.

I actually enjoyed it. Along with "Do Over",about a 34 year old man who time travelled into his teenaged body. Unfortunately, It was also canned.
It was 90% more accurate than "That '80's Show".
Except that it took place in 1980 or 1981 (I'm confused...)
instead of 1984,which "That '80's Show" took place.

"That '80's Show" wasn't bad compared to the shows listed on "TV Guide 50 Worst Shows" list. Like some FOX shows mentioned like "The Chevy Chase Show", "Who Wants To Marry A Multi Millionaire?", "Woops!", and "Celebrity Boxing".

Those shows were far more worse than "That '80's Show".
In my opinion.  :D

Good thing "That '80's Show" (2002) wasn't listed amongst the worst.

It was neither good or bad.

One really atrocious sitcom was mentioned was "Baby Bob",
which was really gut wrenching awful.
Along with many reality shows. (only 1 was listed)
Including FOX's over hyped "American Idol".

I guess the producers don't care much about the 80's.

Nothing made sense on "That 80's show".  I was glad when that mess was cancelled.  I mean Debbie Gibson shows up in a stupid cameo, and the dumb thing was that in 1984 she was only like 13 years old.  She wasn't big until the late 80's.

Actually, her name is Deborah Gibson.

She played a perky customer on "That '80's Show".
Not some pop singer related role.

She was actually a great guest star.
Deborah Gibson looks very beautiful &  has a better singing voice than she had during her "Electric Youth".

Her cameo would't be called dumb.

Here's some cameos from "That '70's Show"

Shriley Jones & Danny Bonaduce
"The Partridge Family" was cancelled around 1974. "That '70's Show" took place in the late '70's.

Jack Osbourne
He wasn't even born in the 1970's.

Eve Plumb
"The Brady Bunch" was canned in 1974.
Not to mention that she didn't appear on "The Brady Bunch Hour" (1977)

So the show didn't made sense. It probably supposed to be silly. This would be a great show for  the "TV Land Kitschen"
in 20 years. (along with "Do Over", "The Tick"...animated & live action versions, and "Apartment 2F")

BTW, most of the current singers who appeared on "American Dreams" weren't even alive in the 1960's.

I think most people just feel the show simply flat out sucked.  It wasn't anywhere near an accurate portrayal of the 80's.

Accurate potrayal of the '80's...
"That '80's Show" was a cheesy ("so*bad*it's*good") sitcom not a miniseries like "The 60's".

I wouldn't mind if there were to be a  "That '90's Show".
With over exaggerated characters acting like characters from "Sienfeld" or "Mall Rats" and hangs out at a cofee house. With a bunch of pop culture references. Oh, and Alicia Silverstone & Stone Temple Pilots would both make a cameo. (with some more '90's celebs)

I'm not offended with the hypothetical "That '90's Show".

I only liked "That '80's Show" because it was funny.
Despite that  it was inacurate.  It was a fun/quirky show.

"Do Over" had some accuracy, but that's another topic.

I see what you are saying, but I still think "That 80's Show" sucked.  So did most of America.  It could have been campy and still good, but I thought it was awful.  None of the characters or storylines were the least bit interesting.

Your entitled to your own opinion.

Atleast "TV Guide" didn't ranked "That '80's Show" amongst the 50 worst shows of all time with the likes of "Baby Bob", "Homeboys in Outer Space", "Cop Rock", "The Flying Nun", "Baywatch", "Woops!", "The Tom Green Show", "Manimal", "XFL", "Hogan's Heroes", and 30 more tv turkies.

And "Pink Lady...and Jeff" & "The Brady Bunch Hour" (both also ranked on TV Guide's 50 worst list) are on DVD!!!

So some "bad tv shows" still have some fans.

The New TNN reruns "Baywatch".
"Springer" & "Howard Stern" are still on the air.
TV Land reruns "The Flying Nun"

BTW, I don't watch these shows, but their loyal fan base & a new generation of fans probably like these series.

I'm not trying to get people to like "That 80's Show".

I just posted my opinion. And you all can diss it,but I'm not a fan of a lot of reality shows, many sappy family sitcoms from the '80's/'90's (execpt "Who's The Boss" & "Step by Step"), and  "Friends".
