Subject: Why did people dress the way they did?

Written By: chad on 01/24/03 at 12:23 a.m.

What influenced people of the 80's to wear the clothes they did and they hairstyles they did, when looking back now they are so corny. Were they trying to portray a certain image or trying to be like certain people?

Everyone was creative and original, bold and stylish, weren't afraid of loud/bright colors,... for starters.  ;)

you are right.  The key word is "original".  It was all original and new and once it caught on, everybody wanted to be a part of it.

Today however, nothing is original and new, its all been pretty much the same since the 90's.

IMO The cool thing about 80s fasion was that you rarely saw two people wearing the same outfit. People mixed and matched just about anything(high heels and leg warmers?!). People were daring and creative, not like today where it seems that all you see is baggy pants and baggy shirts.

Back in the 80s you could easily tell the difference between a skater and a rocker, now you can't tell the difference between a rocker and a rapper because they wear the same clothes. It just seems to me that nowadays having a sense of style just means that you've spent a hundred bucks on a Hilfiger shirt.

Couldn't have said it better. Most people would say the same about this decade, the 00s, but in the 80s I think it was more about having fun than trying to get attention, that's why I personally think these modern day "trends" don't last long, lol. In the 80s everything was edgy and new. Recently, the 80s trends have been making a comback, but unfortunatly, those trends were better the first time around, in the 80s, because it was something new at the time.

Creative and original...bold and stylish, yes indeed!

No matter what decade you are in the trying to look cool is the main objective.80s styles were colorful and flashy which was the reflection of the decade.NO MATTER WHAT DECADE YOU ARE IN people are gonna imitate celebrities of course we wanted to be Michael Jackson just like the kids today wannabe like Eminem.Resinchaser,I agree with you 100%.We had a great depression in the 30s and we had another one start in the 90s.People said the 80s were for phonies and wanted to keep it real so the grunge baggy look was in.But it was cool to be depressed in the 90s thanks to some of the music. In the 80s the music was lively and fun and would always cheer you up.Chad,I hope you dont ask this question in 20 more years because no you have learned that people just want to look cool and keep up with the times.

::) No, we did not all copy stars like Madonna.  The 80s were well underway before Madonna became big.

I look back sometimes, but it doesn't seem corny to me at all! 80s fashion was the best!  8)
