Subject: Steve Miller Band

Written By: Criz on 02/02/03 at 08:11 a.m.

This maybe quite naive of me, but I really only know two songs by the band. I didn't know whether to post this in the 70s or 80s thread either.

I have only heard 'The Joker' and 'Abracadabra' and I wanted to know if there are any other famous songs. I also wanted to know which style of song was more typical for the group, beacuse if you know the songs, they are quite different!

So who can help me out? :)

Well, in the 1970's, they released two albums with lots of hits.

They are:

Fly Like an Eagle, which contains:

Fly Like an Eagle
Take the Money & Run
Rock'n' Me

and Book of Dreams, which contains:

Jet Airliner (should be played with the instrumental cut that precedes it, "Threshold," and the album version contains the "S" word!)
Jungle Love
Swingtown

You may want to check out "The Steve Miller Band's Greatest Hits 1974-1978," which contains all those songs ("Jet Airliner" is the censored 45 version) but not "Abracadabra."

Hi Criz :)

I can probobly help a little. I would consider them primarily a 70's band.  If memory serves me, the album the Joker came out in 1973.  I am not up on my music details but think this was their first to reach the charts.  Abracadabra was a #1 hit in 1982 (nearly 10 years later).  I supposes this would account for the differing styles but their dominant style would be closer to the sound of "The Joker".  A few other hits that you might recognize from the 70's...Take The Money and Run, Fly Like an Eagle, Jet Airliner just to name a few. :)

While the group was wildly successful here in the States from 1973-82, considering the only other two hits that the SMB ever scored in the U.K. were "Rock'n Me" (Fall of '76) and "Keeps Me Wondering Why" (Summer of '82), I think you can be forgiven... :-)

Crazy Don named most of their other biggies here. And he's right, Fly Like an Eagle (1976) and Book of Dreams (1977) were by far their biggest-selling albums. But they were relatively popular right out of the gate, starting w/ their 1968 debut, Children of the Future. The Joker (1973) was actually their ninth charting album here...

I agree w/ julie that "The Joker" is more typical of their "hit" sound, considering they were most popular during the mid to late '70s. If you want to investigate further, I say definitely pass on the lousy American compilation, Greatest Hits 1974-78, which Crazy Don mentioned. For whatever reason, Capitol, his label here throughout most of the years, has never issued a definitive, career-spanning hits collection of his best work! :-( Instead, I recommend picking up that far superior 1998 Greatest Hits that came out over in your country; it duplicates every track on the U.S. 1974-78 collection, and adds seven more, including "Abracadabra" and most of his other '80s & '90s hits! (Oh, and even the uncensored version of "Jet Airliner"!) In fact, just five weeks ago, I bought the Australian edition of that 1998 hits CD myself for just U.S.$13.99 at my local K-mart, of all places... :-)
