Subject: The Ramen Shrine!

Written By: Rice Cube on 02/05/03 at 06:15 p.m.

Ah Ramen....such an incredibly versatile food item ;D

I grew up with Ramen.  Three minute prep, add the soup base, BAM!  Instant meal.  All for not even a quarter.  When I was in college, Ramen was like the primary food group, followed by pizza, tacos and Frosted Flakes.  But you can't beat the economy of Ramen.  At Costco you can get a 24-pack of Ramen for under $3.  That's like a whole week's worth of meals, for $3!!

Ah, life would totally suck without Ramen.  In fact I think I'll make some soon.

I love Ramen! It tastes so good with a bit of Red Devil hot sauce and lemon. I could eat that stuff all the time and not get sick of it! I wish I had some right now....:-/

The hubby doesn't get the Ramen appeal.  I just made some for dinner last night, in fact.  It was pretty darned good.  What I do, though, is drain off most of the water and add the seasonings so you basically just have flavored noodles.

80's Cheerleader........I do the SAME thing!  I am glad I am not the only one!  I like when they are all sticky!!  Sorry about your hubby not appreciating the ramen appeal.  I think that is a quality every woman should look for in a man!   ;)

WTF is Ramen? Sounds like some kind of noodle soup...we have that here too....Mr. Noodles and Sapporo Ichiban...is it anything like those? If it is, then I do the same thing...drain off the water and add the seasonings! I also add very finely chopped broccoli and cauliflower and cubed chicken......mmmmmmmmmmmmm!!

This is perfect for the 80s board, my late teens and early 20s were filled with Ramen, it was my primary food group.  I did the water drain off and added the spice and margerine to it most of the time.
Here's something cool, sometime in 87-88 my friends and I ended up with "Majic Mushrooms" or "Liberty Caps", an effective hallucinegenic mushroom that grows here in fields in the spring and summer.  I used the spice packs from my ramen to cook up some good mushroom soup.  We watched Empire Strikes Back, it was intense. :o

That reminds me of that commercial where this guy is singing along to Def Leppard: "Pour some shook-up ramen...". That's weird; it sounds to me like they're saying, "Pour some sugar on May".

ramen of your choice + 4 or 5 slices of american cheese + all the vegetable left overs in your fridge + any form of meat you can find = my entire college diet 1987-1990...

:P

The college girls dinner always included ramen of some flavor...my meals consisted of one of the following: ramen, kraft macaroni and cheese, yogurt, popcorn, or some combination of the above. That and sun tea or whatever you had left over from the party the night before; we would try to add different splashes of booze to our ramen. Nasty. Don't try this at home. I have to say chicken was our favorite. We  used to sit around and have debates on what the green flecks really were.

Are you guys talking about the microwaveable stuff like Cup O' Noodles? I was always wary of some of that stuff since it has msg in it (but then, everything has msg in it!).

Can't say that I eat it anymore :(

Rice,
You're freaking me out. I've just spent hours on the "Net" trying to find some real Ramen recipes. Even had to download Japanese text support. Love it, love it, love it!!! I add cabbage, green onions, carrots, sometimes an egg, maybe a litle kamaboko or Spam, soy sauce and a little pineapple vinegar. Mmmm mmmmm good. I've always loved Ramen, but a class at the U. of Hawai'i + no cash = ramen and rice!  ;D

Yeah, poor in Hawai'i is better than middle class in Ca. any day! I just have this really bad sticky rice monkey living on my back now. ;D
And speaking of Hawai'i, my sister is getting on a plane as we speak for Maui. >:(

Oh Yeah!  I did the egg thing too, make it a bit thicker, more of a noodle stew then soup.

My husband was in the army when we got married and we were stationed at Fort Bragg, NC.  I wasn't working yet and my hubby was only a Spec 4 which isn't your highest paid person. :)  Anyway, at the commissary we could get Ramen 18 for $1.  I was only 19 and didn't have much experience in the kitchen so we pretty much lived on them sometimes.  I almost can't eat them now but hubby still loves them and all the kids are hooked.  My oldest lives on this stuff during marching band season.
I do have a pretty good recipe though:
1lb ground beef                     2 pkgs ramen (I use beef)
1/2 bag of oriental veggies      ginger

Brown the beef.  Remove from pan and sprinkle one of the flavor packets on it.
In the same pan, add 2 cups of water, noodles from both pkgs, the veggies, ginger to taste, and the other flavor packet.  Bring to a boil, lower heat and let simmer until noodles are tender.  Add back the meat and maybe top with some cut scallions (green onions).  Actually not that bad.

I do the same thing, too...except I add the seasonings to the water while it is boiling.  Then you add the noodles and the flavor cooks into the noodles...yummy

i never could see why people liked the stuff :o oh well i gues it's a good thing that well i'm in college i manage a pizza place so i get FREE ;D :D :) pizza(YEA!!!)  can't go wrong with mac and "cheese". but as bill engvall says if you ever eat spam and mac and cheese watch out! when the spam grease hits the powdered cheese you get indigestion that'll make a taco bell fart seem like a warm tropical breeze(i learned this too late)

I don't think I could have gotten through college without the sustenance provided by the cheap and easy-to-prepare Ramen noodles!!! Even today, I'll cook me some for a feeling of nostalgia!!! :)

Forget the water, forget the flavor package...I love uncooked ramen noodles. The block of noodles is just amazing. Yum, I'm gonna get me some now.

I still eat it all the time, but I only like the chicken flavor.  I boil the noodles then drain them, then stir in the flavor, along with a glop of butter and a piece of american cheese.

When I used to work in a high-end engineering firm, my boss would eat Ramen as soup, EVERY DAY for lunch.  Heres a guy who can afford to eat anything he wants, and thats what he chooses.

I used to eat it with Chef Boyardee's Ravioli and parmesan cheese :)  I used chicken flavor because it was the most common brand at Costco.  But I did go out and buy individual packets when they were on sale at Kroger's.  I really liked the mushroom flavor.
