Subject: Why did WHAM! break up so quickly?

Written By: Reena on 02/06/03 at 01:37 a.m.

"Wham!" was the quintesential 80s pop band IMO.  A blend of New Wave and teeny Bubble gum pop.  They shot to megastardom in 1984 and 1985.  Then in 1986 I think it was, they broke up and were never heard from again.  Why did the group break up so quickly?

Sure we keep hearing about George Michael.  But what about that other guy?  Where is he?

Everything She Wants is my favorite song from Wham!, and I think one of the best of the 80s.  Sure it's lighthearted bubblegum fluff, but it's still so cool and fun!  :)

They were a great group.  I loved "Everything She Wants", "Freedom", and ofcourse George Michael's solo "Careless Whisper".  guilty feet have got no rythym

I don't remember all the details, but I think they had a falling out with their manager or something.  But hey Wham! did leave while they were still on top, and I think going out on top was something they wanted to do.  They didn't fade away from the radar like Duran Duran did by the Late 80s.

All of their songs sound so youthful.  I think George Michael and the other dude were still teenagers (like 19, or well maybey 20) when they wrote many of the songs for their first big hit.  Their songs sound like something teenagers or anyone under 21 would write.  And it captures the era perfectly.

I think "Careless Whisper" was also a Wham song, not George Michael solo.

There was always something that creeped me out about George...he was just too "pretty".  Andrew Ridgeley, the other guy, was way hot, though!  I remember he had a solo song that charted briefly, although I can't for the life of me remember what it was called.  All I remember is him wearing a black top hat in the video.

For me Everything she wants is the best song from Wham and one of the best songs from the decade, the rythm is sooo 80's!

Yeah Wham! was great!  Actually, Careless Whisper was recorded only by George Michael, but was included on the Wham! Make It Big LP, thus, listed as performed by Wham!  Also, Katrinawitch, the song you're thinking of by Andrew Ridgely was called, "Shake".  It came out in 1989 - kind of had a hard rock feel to it.
