Subject: 80's Kids TV fans! (Ulysees 31,Cities of Gold etc)

Written By: Cyberbabe on 02/08/03 at 06:16 a.m.

Hi  I have not long found this forum and must say its great for all things 80's!

Is there anyone here who was a massive fan of 80's kids tv? I grew up with some great programmes, there have never been any kids tv series as great as we had then then! (Ulysees 31, The Mysterious Cities of Gold, Dogtanian, Jamie and the Magic Torch, Dungeons and Dragons, etc, i could go on!)

I always wanted to be either Yumi from Ulysees (i remember putting a banana clip across my head!) or Cheetara from Thundercats! LOL  And i wanted Uni from Dungeons and Dragons as my pet!  Hehe

Anyone who was a fan, post your memories, love to hear them?  (even just to check im not completely mad!)   ;D

Ulysses 31 was a tv show that is yet to be matched by any other childrens' programming. Unfortunately for US audiences, the show only ran for 13 episodes (of the original 26!) and never aired again (except in Spanish networks). The show was replaced by none other than Rainbow Brite! *shudder*

Jean Chalopin worked in conjunction with Tokyo Movie Shinsha (TMS) and their programmes were distributed by DIC worldwide. From them we got such gems as Heathcliff, Inspector Gadget, Mysterious Cities Of Gold, and a few others. Ulysses 31 was their crowning achievement, imho. I always wanted a model kit/toy of Circe, the spaceship! (I think there was an episode of Ulysses 31 where they crash in a planet of giants and the spaceship was used as a decorative toy!). Good soundtrack too - kind of rockin' and futuristic with interludes of the dramatic.

TMS is a company who's worked on even more tv shows. I think they even did Thundercats, Silverhawks, and GI Joe. The other company which would come close would be Saban (the same guys from Power Rangers). I sometimes get those two mixed up. Hasbro did most of the toys from these shows. Nowadays there's another resurgence of good animated fare after about 15 years of junk, and we can thank the Cartoon Network and the Sci Fi channel for that :)

If anybody is interested, here's a website where you can download the first 10 episodes of Ulysses 31. It's worthwhile to check out, imho, as it shows how good a series this actually was and how most shows pale in comparison. Granted, there's a lot of nostalgic value to the series, but some of these episodes are bonafide good stories. It's amazing this was aimed at children and even more shocking that it was cancelled in half-way through its first run! I highly recommend episode 5. If anything, watch this episode.
